EORG E INN ESS was bo rn in Newburg,
New York, May 1, 18~5. Hi s boyhood
was s pent in Newa rk , New J ersey,
where he ear ly lea rned th e rudiments of painting. In hi s t wenty-fi rst yea r he passed o ne
mo nth in t he studi o of Regis Gig no ux in New
York. With no furt her professio nal preparatio n he ent ered up o n the wo rk o f his life,
pursuin g it earnest ly a nd steadily until he ca me
to be generally regarded as the great est o f
American landscape paint ers.
Tho ugh ranked with th e great French leaders
of the Barbizon sc hool Mr. Inn ess was distinctly an American artist. He visited Europe
three o r fo ur times, livin g in Italy fro m 18 71 to
1875 ; but hi s indi vidu ality was not weakened
by what he lea rned ab road. His ea rnest study
of Nat ure and st ri vin g fo r a fuller expression
of her various moods were neve r relaxed wh il e
he lived.
He died at t he Bridge of Allan in Scotland ,
August 3, 1894.
