All Trails Lead to Rock Springs
Initially part of the natural migration trail of the Cherokee Indian
Tribe, commonly called the Cherokee Trail, Sweetwater County, Wyoming
was the early home of Mountain Men and Fur Trappers.
Once purchased under President Andrew Jackson with the Louisianna Purchase, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark launched four expeditions of the Green River, starting in 1805, from Sweetwater County to map
the western United States.
As part of the Westward Migration, the area was used by emmigrants enroute to Oregon and California via the Oregon Trail. Parting of
Ways in northern Sweetwater County is where groups would take a break
and decide if they would split into the group going to Oregon or form another group choosing California as a destination. The path through Sweetwater County also provided an easier crossing of the Rocky Mountains for
Mormons pushing handcarts to settle Salt Lake City.
As people settled in the west, a young group of horsemen was
hired to deliver mail via the Pony Express and stage stations emerged along
the route in Sweetwater County to support cross-country travel and fresh
horses for the riders.
Union Pacific Railroad began surveying a route to connect the
east and the west. The visible coal deposits and the abundant waters of the
Green River made Sweetwater County an obvious selection for development -- resulting in the incorporation of Rock Springs in 1890.
As Americans turned to vehicles for tranportation, the Lincoln
Highway followed the route of the railroad, with large portions of the highway being turned into Interstae 80 in 1956, the longest Interstate Highway,
which spans more than 2,900 miles, was built to connect the west coast in
California to the east coast in New York City.
Whether you’re headed to Oregon, Yellowstone National Park or
New York-- all trails lead to Rock Springs, Wyoming. We hope you enjoy
some of the many historical sites that demonstrate our long and unique
experiences during your stay.
