• The following data represent the monthly use of all antimicrobials for units at RGH, PH,
and WRC for which the number of patient days are collected each month.
• Data are presented as defined daily dose (DDD; as described by the WHO) per 1000
patient days (kPD; see slide 3 for description of PDs) to allow for comparison between
units (i.e., accounting for patient load).
• Data are from April – December of 2016.
• The data are meant to provide a broad overview of antimicrobial use in our facilities. The
data can be used to look at long term trends in antimicrobial use, to identify anomalies in
use, to plan future projects in determining appropriate use of antimicrobials, etc.
• While the data are separated into various groupings of similar units, differences in patient
populations (among many other factors) must still be taken into account when interpreting
the data.
• It is important to remember the data are not intended to place blame, but are a tool to
identify differences and areas for potential improvement. There are many ways to
interpret “big picture” data and many factors that need to be considered, including the
methods of measurement.

What are patient days?
Month – Unit A
1 patient in hospital for 1 day = 1 patient day
1 patient in hospital for 3 days = 3 patient days
2 patients in hospital: black patient for 3 days, green
patient for 2 days = 5 patient days
7 patients, 26 patient days
Each patient day represents a unit of time in which the services of the facility are used by a patient.
Patient days can be used as a denominator for other measures of health care in order to compare
across units/time/facilities/etc.
