ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT Alex Carr I stayed in Clemson and was in the water at least 5 times a week and also lifted 3 times a week. I wanted to continue working hard over the summer so it wouldn’t take as long to get back into shape when the season started. I think training with Lucas has helped me a lot, and also we have mixed up the training groups a couple times this year which I have liked. At the beginning of the year I found a chest hair, that’s when I knew I would have a good season, I have also had to shave my face about 3 times a week so that’s another factor that’s playing into my season. Trying to keep the team attitude upbeat, which I think we have done a pretty good job of so far all things considered Eric Bruck I focused almost entirely on weights over summer. I changed my mentality to a more “this is our last chance” type thought process. Due to the moped accident I really have a good base with my legs, which I think is the biggest reason why I am able to do things this year that I couldn’t come close to doing last year. Kelsey Krauss This summer I decided to stay at Clemson to train. There was a small group of athletes here, so there was a lot of specialized attention in the water. I committed myself to coming Monday through Saturday and lifting weights on a regular basis. We trained both yards and meters to prepare for the upcoming season. I committed to pushing myself each time I was at a practice whether it was in or out of the water. Since last year, I have been working on changing my attitude towards swimming to prepare for this collegiate season and it is making a difference in my training and in racing. I started to learn that if I wanted to train and race to my full potential I needed to be confident and believe in myself, the coaching staff, and the team. I realized I need to believe I can race in practice, be aggressive in my races, Tigers who have taken it to a whole NEW level! Junior Alex Carr and Sophomores Eric Bruck, Kelsey Krauss and Kristen Redmond 1.What kind of training did you do over the summer to prepare for the upcoming season? 2.What have you done differently to prepare for this collegiate season? 3.What are some of the things you have been focusing on to contribute to your team’s overall success this year? and push myself to do things I didn’t think I could in the weight room and in the pool. I learned since last year that I need to trust the coaching staff and the team in order to contribute the best I can to the success of the team. This is helping me to be much more successful so far this season. I have been focusing on many different things to contribute to my team’s overall success this season. First, I have been concentrating on pushing myself as hard as I can in every practice knowing that my teammates are doing the same so we can have the most productive team possible. Second, I have learned to trust my teammates and support them. Between school and training, it can become a lot to handle and it is much easier to do so when you know you have a team full of friends to help you succeed in and out of the water. Finally, this season I have been having more fun and trying to enjoy swimming at the collegiate level more. It is something that I am lucky to be able to do and something that I now realize can easily be taken away so you have to give it your all and enjoy it for yourself and the team while you still can! Kristen Redmond I swam five mornings a week long course and did about an 8,000 and ran once a week about 3 miles. I believe that I am training just as hard as I did last year. Last year was such a big adjustment to college and I think my performance was really affected by that. This year I know a lot more of what to expect so I think mentally I am in a better place and my performance is benefiting from that. I have been trying to step it up in the pool at meets. This year I have more confidence that I can go out there and race everyone else in the pool and I realize that I am the one that has to go out there and score points for the team. You can’t count on one person alone to score all the points it has to be an effort from everyone. Worth A Thousand Words REMEMBERING FRAN CRIPPEN The swimming community and the Atlantic Coastal Conference lost a great ambassador several weeks ago. University of Virginia graduate Francis Crippen, 26, died Oct. 23 off the coast of the United Arab Emirates during the FINA Open Water 10K World Cup competition. He was the 10K open-water national champion and had been named 2010 U.S. open-water swimmer of the year. He dreamed of competing in the Olympics. Fran had connections with many Clemson University alumni. As the Florida State University’s Head Swim Team Coach wrote in an email, “It was an honor to swim with Fran, against Fran, and now in honor of Fran.” Clemson University swimmers and divers remembered Fran by wearing the body marking “FC” in their meet against the University of South Carolina on October 29th. The Crippen Family has established a foundation, if you’d like to learn more about Fran or the foundation, please visit: francrippen.com.
