AIG Vision
Craven County Schools united with
families and community will rigorously
challenge all gifted students to show
academic, intellectual, social and
emotional growth, to graduate from high
school, and to be globally competitive for
post-secondary education, work and life
in the 21st century.
AIG STEM
Socratic Scholars in 4th grade have
finally finished their STEM challenge on
Simple Shelters. They presented their
products along with a PowerPoint to their
fourth grade classes. They are now
beginning The Compass Challenge.
Students investigate the components of
a compass and design and build their own
compass.
Socratic Scholars in 5th grade are
learning about Computer Programing.
They are taking an interactive course on
coding which allows them to develop
computational thinking and programming
skills. Their challenge is to create their
own game or app. Next month we will be
able to share with you their projects!
Check out my webpage under Resource
Teachers on the Bridgeton Elementary site
where pictures of our STEM Challenges are
posted.
AIG Reading
Reading Scholars in 4th grade tackled
The Steadfast Tin Soldier in December
and are now working on comparing
themes. They are reading Shrewd Todie
and Miser Lyzer, a Ukrainian folktale
and The Green Man by Gail E. Haley.
Reading Scholars in 5th grade read The
Hundred Dollar Bill by Ruth Wilder Lane
and an excerpt from Little House in the
Woods titled “Christmas” by Laura
Ingles Wilder, Ruth’s sister. They were
asked to compare and contrast life at
Christmas during the period of the text
with life at Christmas now. They are now
researching their favorite authors. They
will use Prezi, a cloud-based presentation
software, to present their information.

AIG Math
4 and 5 grade Math Scholars are
nearing the completion their algebra
unit. They have learned how to work
backwards to solve equations that
have unknown variables and to create
tables as a strategy to solve problems
that have two unknowns in the format
of two equations that go together.
They will end the unit by exploring
equations that go together in which one
equation in the set has only one
variable.
