Synonym (s)...................……………. Dichromic acid, disodium salt 60-70% Water Balance Dichromic acid, disodium salt 10588-01-9 Water 7732-18-5 Dichromate acid, sodium bichromate solution Section 03 - Hazard Identification Inhalation...................………….…. Inhalation of mist may cause irritation of the nasal septum and respiratory tract. Prolonged or repeated exposure may cause ulceration and perforation of the nasal septum. May cause kidney and liver damage. Skin Contact / Absorption…….… Contact with broken skin may lead to formation of firmly marginated chrome sores. May rarely cause allergic contact dermatitis. Massive over-exposure may lead to kidney failure, liver damage, and death. Product # SBIC Page 2 of 7 Eye Contact................………….…... Over-exposure will cause severe irritation and potential permanent damage to the eyes. Exposure to low level concentrations may cause moderate irritation or conjunctivitis. Ingestion.....................……………… Can cause severe tissue destruction. Kidney failure may follow and result in death. May cause liver damage. Exposure Limits…………………….. PEL = 0.1 mg/m3 ceiling, TLV = 0.05 mg/m3 TWA, A1 Section 04 - First Aid Measures Inhalation....................……………… Remove victim to fresh air. Give artificial respiration only if breathing has stopped. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. If conscious, irrigate nasal passages and mouth with water. Seek immediate medical attention. Skin Contact / Absorption………… Remove contaminated clothing. Wash affected area with soap and water. Seek medical attention if irritation occurs or persists Eye Contact..................…………….. Flush immediately with water for at least 20 minutes. Forcibly hold eyelids apart to ensure complete irrigation of eye tissue. Seek immediate medical attention Ingestion......................……………… Do not induce vomiting. If vomiting occurs, lean victim forward to prevent breathing in vomitus. Give large amounts of water. Do not give anything by mouth to an unconscious or convulsing person. Accident victims should be given 5-10 g of ascorbic acid (not effervescent tablets) dissolved in water. This dose can be repeated several times. Seek immediate medical attention . Massive over-exposure to solutions of this product could lead to kidney failure and death. Death has been avoided in several such cases through the use of early renal dialysis. It has been reported that there is little value in chelating agents, however, ascorbic acid administered intravenously and locally is an effective antidote (converting Cr+6 to Cr+3) in preventing renal tubular failure. Skin ulcers may be treated by removal from exposure, daily cleaning, debridement, and application of antibiotic cream and dressing. Dialysis may be necessary as indicated. Up to 10g ascorbic in stomach plus I.V. ascorbic acid 1g in divided doses. Monitor blood chemistries, force fluids for diuresis (of chrome). Do not attempt chelation!. Protect renal tubes. Additional Information.....…………. Section 05 - Fire Fighting Conditions of Flammability……….. Non-flammable Means of Extinction........………….. Product does not burn. When fire is involved, use any fire-fighting agent appropriate for surrounding material; use water spray to cool fire-exposed surfaces. Flash Point....………………………… Not applicable Product # SBIC Page 3 of 7 Auto-ignition Temperature………… Not applicable Upper Flammable Limit …………… Not applicable Lower Flammable Limit...……….… Not applicable Hazardous Combustible Products. Decomposition yields oxygen which will help any surrounding fire. Special Fire Fighting Procedures... Wear NIOSH-approved self-contained breathing Apparatus and protective clothing. Explosion Hazards…………………. Oxidizer. Avoid contact with organic material. Section 06 - Accidental Release Measures Leak / Spill................….…………….. Contain spill by diking. Remove as much as possible by vacuuming. Then treat the spill area with reducing agent to convert the hexavalentchromium to the trivalent form and neutralize with a weak base. Deactivating Materials...……….…... Reduce hexavalent chromium with sodium bisulphite, sodium sulphite or ferrous sulphate. Section 07 - Handling and Storage Handling Procedures.......………….. Use proper equipment for lifting and transporting all containers. Use sensible industrial hygiene and housekeeping practices. Wash thoroughly after handling. Avoid all situations that could lead to harmful exposure. Storage Requirements......……...…. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place. Keep container tightly closed, and away from incompatible materials. Section 08 - Personal Protection and Exposure Controls Protective Equipment Eyes.………………………….……….. Chemical goggles, full-face shield, or a full-face respirator is to be worn at all times when product is handled. Contact lenses should not be worn; they may contribute to severe eye injury. Respiratory…………………………... Respiratory protection is not normally required. If use creates vapours, mists, or aerosols, then a NIOSH-approved respirator with a dust/mist cartridge is recommended or SCBA. Gloves……………………………….... Impervious gloves of chemically resistant material (rubber or PVC) should be worn at all times. Wash contaminated clothing with soap and water, dry Product # SBIC Page 4 of 7 thoroughly before reuse.
