Npvember 2007 Fall Festival – October meeting held in Walnut Cove The fall festival was held in WALNUT COVE, about two hour from Charlotte. A large group turned out to enjoy Mary‟s chicken stew and to cook hotdogs over an open flame. When is the last time, you actually put a hotdog on a stick(straight from the tree) and roasted your own over an open flame. Did someone say – “a long time ago”. It was great to see Ron and Mary‟s place and the commercial setup they have to raise and sell fish. Tanks and tanks of gorgeous babies were there to tempt even the hardcore among us. (No, I am not adding any more fish to my pond – well, maybe just one or two.) Geoffrey won the halloween costume contest wearing his famous soccer player outfit. Marcia Theroux was a close second in her cowgirl costume, with a two six gun (er, water bottle) holster. Geoffrey won a nice garden koi statue. Pumpkins were carved and put out by several members, but it was hands down winner with Mary Ann Penix„s pumpkin, carved with an artist‟s touch and handpainted with exquisite koi. several ask Mary for her chicken stew recipe and she indicated that she just added this and that and really didn‟t have any clue as to how she made it. Yeah, right, it‟s a closely guarded family secret…. I heard Dec 9 – Tanya & Tracy McCorkle = Christmas Party CHLORINE POISONING SUBMITTED BY JACK MCNEARY It seems that every fishkeeper runs into this problem at one time or another and yours truly has had his share of misadventures. I will try to tell you what I have learned by way of relating some experiences that are common to all of us who keep fish. My first misadventure was when I just trickled water from a garden hose into a 300 gallon holding tank here at my office. The office is where we have a 6000 gallon koi pond and several smaller tanks for plants and fish. I forgot the hose and left it running all night. The next morning all the fish were dead except a few that had washed I forgot the hose and left it running all night. In this case they were small gold fish that had volunteered and a couple of small koi. Since there was nothing of high value I thought that it was a cheap way to learn a lesson. Well unfortunately, it seems very common to make the same mistake twice...or more. This was many years ago, since I have been keeping koi for over twenty years. I remember reading about someone who bought one of those bulky wind-up kitchen timers. Anytime he opened a valve or added water, he stuck this thing in his pocket and it reminded him he had stuff going on at the pond. What a great idea. For a time I tried to remember to display a flag on a pole when adding water or draining a pond. This did not seem to work and presently, I have at least four ponds with fish that frequently need water changes or additions. I cannot count the number of times I have left the water running longer that I wanted. I always seem to be in a hurry. As an example: . Add water as smally trickle into the waterfall water. Let it run overnight if you can, or all day where you can keep an eye on the level of the pond. . Chlorine often is neutralized by the distance it has to go in the pipes before it gets to your location. Sometimes, there will be no chlorine in the water at a given water tap and sometimes there will be traceable amounts. . Add a few fish at a time to . One person knew someone your pond. who worked at the wter department and he stated they vary . Make frequent small water the amount of chlorine based changes rather than a massive on the time of the year and the one. From some post on the my koilist, I have learned some things of interest concerning chlorine. . Fish become listless and sometimes come to the surface for air when there is too much chlorine. . Chlorine does not always affect the fish immediately. I know of a case where one 12 My most recent misadventure was inch koi survived, three 12 inch just recently (October 5, 2007) when koi died, all the goldfish(5) surI left the water flowing too fast and vived and one small 7 inch koi running too long in a 1000 gallon tank with about thirty nice fish. Everything looked okay that evening, but the next morning five fish were dead. I hope I do not lose more fish, but the gills have to be damaged. This is stressful to the fish and can lead to other problems. So far so good. Whatever you do to fish, do it slowly PKWS 2007 OFFICERS President Vice Pres.Secretary – Myrtis Manus 704537-4234 Treasurer – Allen Lee 704-2892890 Membership – Dawn Mize 980 -235-9414 Newsletter – Carol Mathis 704 -455-8587 Property Manager – Darrell Mauldin 704-573-3663 November 2007 page 3 potential for bacteria and other organisms. In fact sometimes there is more chlorine in the water than is recommended by the governing body.(I do not know if that body is local, state or federal). The point is what might not hurt the fish one day, possibly will hurt the fish the next time. . If you are adding water to a pond and can let the water enter over a waterfall and combine with a large volume of water, there is little to any effect a foot away from the water fall. I have been doing this in my 6000 gallon pond for years and have been safe so far. LATEST IDEA HELP WANTED Information Booth – we’re going to have a booth separate from the tents this year and need people to man the table handing out brochures and information. Call Darlene at 704-784-1066 to volunteer. SET-UP AND TEAR DOWN WORKERS. Change of Time Again on Thursday. We‘re meeting at Darrell & Elaine‘s place of business at 12:00 noon to pick up show tanks, etc., and should be at the hotel by 3:00 p.m. Leo Bollinger is the contact (980-6140737). Sunday tear down begins at 3:00 p.m. and goes until everything is torn down and packed up. Thanks to the people who volunteered. It’s still not too late. Strong backs and “supervisors” needed. Lastly, I have tried a new idea about making a partial water change filling the 1000-gallon pond. I have two other empty tanks about 15 feet away from the 1000-gallon tank. I am filling those tanks with fresh water and letting them sit for at least a day. By that time, the chlorine will have evaporated from the water and I can add it to the pond without having to worry about burning gills. The water will also be the same temperature as the pond I am filling. Fortunately, I have a large submersible pump and can move the water very quickly into the new tank. We will see how that works out. - Jack McNeary People to man hospitality tent. To those who did call Mary Ellen at 704-553-2556 - Thanks! Mary Ellen will be sending out reminders on the sandwich volunteers. AKCA SPEAKER GRANT FOR UP TO $400 AWARDED TO Piedmont Koi & Water Garden Society.
