Access to properties will be maintained and portable
variable message signs (VMS) will be in place to advise
road users of changes to traffic conditions. Roads and
Maritime is committed to working with the community and
will try to minimise the impact to nearby properties and
traffic on the highway while work is being carried out.

Most of the work will be carried out Monday to Friday from
7am to 6pm and on Saturday from 8am to 1pm. Some out
of hours work will be necessary and nearby residents will
be contacted before this takes place.The speed limit will
be reduced during construction.

What will happen during the work
Between October 2012 and November 2013, consultation
was done for the reviews of environmental factors (REFs)
for this work. This consultation provided opportunities for
the community to give feedback on what is proposed.

project website.
The safety improvements at Forty Bends and in Hartley
Valley between Victoria Pass and Forty Bends will have
benefits for road users and the local community through:

Roads and Maritime Services is delivering a number of road safety improvements on the
Great Western Highway between Hartley Valley and Forty Bends. This project is part of the
$250 million jointly funded upgrade from the Australian and NSW governments for the Great
Western Highway between Katoomba and Lithgow. Work is planned to start in December
2014 and is expected to finish in 2017, weather permitting.
