Coaching and Mentoring
Services

Introduction
Welcome to Coaching York.
This booklet is for organisations who are thinking of using, or already use,
coaching and mentoring services.
It describes who we are (our aims and values) and includes a section on why use
Coaching York that explains the unique advantages of working with us.
The bulk of the booklet describes the services that we provide –the commercial
part of what we do (as distinct from our work with communities). It contains a
selection of the learning and development services that we are able to offer to
organisations. The entries are arranged alphabetically by service and illustrate
the kinds of support and expertise that we can provide. However, the very
nature of coaching means that what we actually deliver will be tailored and built
around the particular needs of your organisation.
As a non-profit association run entirely by volunteers, we are looking for
sponsors to support us and to help fund our activities. If you’d like to help, we’ve
included a page describing how organisations can support our work at the end of
the booklet.
For more about Coaching York, please don’t hesitate to contact one of Steering
Group who would be delighted to have a chat. You can find their details via our
website at:

About Coaching York – Who we are
Our mission
Coaching York is a voluntary association of professional people dedicated to
making positive and sustainable changes to the ways in which people relate to
one another. This happens through coaching relationships - conversations which
reveal insights that, in turn, unlock the personal motivation to translate the
insights into action.
Our vision
We know that coaching can transform people’s lives and lead to greater wellbeing and greater self-confidence. It can help people to clarify their goals, fulfil
their potential and perform better. Powerful coaching conversations promote
better co-operation and understanding between people.
Our ambition is for York to become recognised as the coaching capital of the UK:
a city in which all sectors - communities, businesses, voluntary, statutory and
academic - harness the power of coaching relationships and coaching
conversations. We want York to be a place where:






Professional coaches volunteer their time and expertise for the benefit
of local communities
Organisations employ a coaching approach to management, staff,
supplier and customer relationships
Local Government is supported as it responds to its significant social
and financial challenges
Research and evaluation from a city-wide approach to coaching is
shared nationally and internationally
York residents and employees take opportunities to come together to
celebrate the impact of coaching on their communities, businesses,
and individual lives
Qualified and aspiring coaches avail themselves of opportunities for
professional development and learning to apply best practice
P a g e |7
Our Values
In fulfilling our mission and vision, our activities across the City and region will be
guided by five core values:
Inclusive – A coaching community that
is welcoming of everyone
Collaborative – Working together for
the benefit of individuals,
organisations and community groups
Empowering – Enabling people to
integrate a coaching approach into
their own lives
Contagious – Communicating our
passion for coaching so that it ‘infects’
the City
Sticky – Having a positive impact that
is sustained and deepened by those
involved
Our services
We provide a wide range of coaching activities, from free support for
communities to paid professional services for organisations and individuals:






Volunteer coaches for local community projects
Fostering a wide understanding of coaching amongst local
organisations and people
Connecting high-quality coaches with the local community, businesses
and organisations
Developing coaching skills in organisations
Individual and team coaching
Consulting on every aspect of coaching and mentoring
Through our work, we seek to influence opinion leaders to understand the
benefits of coaching and to become active advocates of coaching as a way to
improve what they do.

We are a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to using coaching and mentoring
for the benefit of the communities of York.








entire organisation. As well as coaching and mentoring, we provide
related training, consultancy, advice and coach/mentor supervision
We have unparalleled expertise across many sectors including,
commercial, academic, not for profit, government and health.
We have the scale to provide high quality coaching and mentoring to
organisations of any size
Professional standards - our coaching interventions are carried out by
experienced, qualified or accredited coaches who have supervision
and are covered by professional indemnity insurance and
Competitive fees - As a not-for-profit, our overheads are low and this is
reflected in our fees. Because we are a local provider we do not
normally need to charge for travel and subsistence, making us both
more cost-effective and also eco-friendly in terms of travel.
A significant proportion of our fees will be earned by local Council Tax
payers and are likely to be spent in local markets, so the local economy
will benefit from our work
For assignments commissioned through Coaching York, at least 10% of
the fees earned by our coaches will be used to the benefit of the local
community

Our services - What we do
Behaviour Change
Who is this for?
We all behave or act in certain ways as a result of the situations that confront
us. You have recognized that some of your behaviours are not how you want
them to be. You want to change and you want help, support, and tools to make
that change happen.
What will it give you?
You will find a safe, confidential, one-to-one place to air the behaviours you wish
to change, along with the multiple factors that influence them. You will find new
ways to view situations, to appraise them and to formulate clear and sustainable
plans of action.
What does it consist of?
Your coach will offer four, one-hour coaching conversations in a relaxed setting
of your choosing. Your coach will support you through self-reflection, ideageneration and action planning, responding to your priorities and objectives.
P a g e | 11
Coaching Conversations
Who is this for?
Anyone who feels that important conversations don’t always go as well as they
might, and who have a suspicion that they could have gone better with a little
help. ‘Front line’ staff may find this particularly useful, as the quality and
outcomes of conversations with customers become more demanding. Equally,
this should benefit those with line management responsibilities who would like
to improve the quality of conversations with their staff and colleagues.
What will it give you?
We will provide you with an understanding of the impact that a coaching style of
conversation can have for both parties involved, plus some simple and robust
coaching tools which you will have used and practiced. You will have rehearsed a
sample of coaching conversations that you might usefully have back at the
workplace.
What does it consist of?
This is typically a one day, or series of half day, workshops where you will be
introduced to what coaching is - and is not - and the competencies that make up
effective coaching. Time is spent equally between examination of theories,
models and principles of coaching, and practical experience putting these to the
test via structured triads and feedback. Particular attention is given to the
straightforward yet robust GROW model of coaching, developing and using good
questioning technique, and improving your active listening skills
Page | 12
Coach Development and Mentoring
Who is this for?
Coaches at all stages of experience, and managers and others with experience in
taking a coaching approach in the workplace.
What will it give you?
Fluency with core coaching competencies informs us about who we are as
coaches and enables us to meet our clients at our best, deepening coach
awareness of our own style and approach, and strengthening coach skills and
performance.
What does it consist of?
The focus is on exploring core coaching competencies such as establishing the
coaching agreement, creating trust and intimacy with the client, developing
coaching presence, asking powerful questions, creating awareness and designing
actions. The coach can reflect on positive coaching experiences, and identify
which competencies are supporting effective work, and which competencies
they may wish to develop.
Professional coach mentoring is valuable for those preparing for coaching
certification and exams.
P a g e | 13
Coaching Skills
Who is this for?
People who want to learn about and begin to develop the skills necessary to
coach others, whether in work or elsewhere in life.
What will it give you?
We will help you understand what coaching is – and what it is not. You will
understand the fundamental principles and attributes of coaching - and you will
begin to coach! We will introduce you to accessible and practical coaching
models and research to aid your learning, and show you how you can quickly
apply and deepen your knowledge.
What does it consist of?
Run in groups, by experienced coach trainer(s) you will learn alongside others on
a similar journey. This will enable you to develop your skills and use coaching
models in a safe and energising coaching practice environment. The learning can
be organized over a series of day or half day events.

Coach Supervision
Who is this for?
Coaches, as part of your professional practice.
What will it give you?
The purposes of coach supervision are:
to support you in your coaching work,
to enrich your development as a coach and
to provide quality assurance on behalf of your clients.
As a result of supervision you will sharpen your coaching skills, enhance your
personal self-reflective capabilities and deepen your awareness and
understanding of your learning journey as a professional coach.
What does it consist of?
You and your supervisor will contract to meet on a regular basis in a private, safe
space, where you can talk about any aspect of your coach practice. Together you
will reflect on examples or issues from your coaching work in order that the
coaching you undertake is the best it can be and you can support your clients to
be at their best
.

Developing a Coaching Culture
Who is this for?
People who want to introduce coaching into their workplaces or who want to
find out what this might involve.
What will it give you?
You will build a broad understanding of what is involved in introducing coaching
into an organisation and how it changes the way people are managed, engage
with others and are empowered.
You will understand how to initiate a coaching culture project, the main steps
involved in its implementation, the key issues that would need to be overcome
and the expected deliverables. You will be able to describe what ‘success’ would
look like, the key stakeholders in the process and their roles, and the risks and
benefits.
What does it consist of?
A lively interactive workshop delivered using coaching techniques to both
achieve the outcomes and also to deepen understanding of a coaching culture in
action. Workshops would be tailored to participants who would be encouraged
to bring real examples from their own workplaces to anchor the workshop in the
real-world.

Executive Coaching (1-to-1)
Who this is for
For leaders and managers who wish to raise their game professionally and
personally. More frequently for senior people in an organisation, this is about
“soft stuff to improve hard results.”
What it gives you
Coaching allows you to work in real time on real issues in the organisational
context and importantly make links to and addresses key areas in your wider
context. You enhance flexibility, identify what is important, learn more about
yourself and add choice to create a compelling future through clear direction
and vision.
You concentrate on effective behaviour, relationships, influencing and dealing
with uncertainty to achieve high performance leadership.
What it consists of
Coaching programmes are for an agreed period (often a year for senior people),
usually held once a month for 2 – 3 hours. Each confidential session is at your
nominated venue to reduce time away from the work place. Job related
assignments form an integral and important part of the process.
P a g e | 17
Facilitation
Who is this for?
Anyone looking to improve the effective working of an event or meeting by
empowering people to interact and participate to reach an outcome.
What will it give you?
A facilitator will support both the leader and the group by agreeing how people
in the meeting participate and interact. A facilitator will plan, guide and manage
a group event to ensure that your objectives are met effectively, with clear
thinking, good participation and buy-in from everyone who is involved. Your
facilitator will help ensure there is mutual understanding, that contributions are
considered and valued, and for solutions or decisions to be made with shared
responsibility.
What does it consist of?
The facilitator will plan and design the group process and select ways to help
meet your desired outcome from the day. This will be created after a number of
planning meetings with the lead organiser to understand better your
organisation, the way in which people work together, the number of people
attending, and to agree the ground rules and environment to help participants
to work together.
Page | 18
High Performing Teams
Who this is for
People in groups and “teams” in organisations who are looking to move up a
level in the way they work together and deliver their purpose.
What it gives you
A true performance culture develops where the team goes above and beyond
delivering its operational requirements. The team develops a clear
understanding of the context in which it operates and the levers which drive
that performance, underpinned with that extra zing and buzz which comes from
a real team which is firing on all cylinders, perfectly tuned.
What it consists of
A diagnostic brief with the team leader then individual conversations with
members about how they see things now and what constitutes success for the
future. This creates the foundation for a feedback workshop to bring common
agreement and focus, followed by two to three further bespoke workshops to
allow integration around your team’s definition of high performance, purpose,
and identity and the consequential actions to deliver the sustainable synergistic
spark for success.
P a g e | 19
Leadership and Management Development
Who is this for?
We help your teams and leaders become enthusiastic, engaged and effective.
We do this through designing learning interventions with a twist of individuality.
We specialise in interpersonal skill development and lasting behavioural change.
What will it give you?
We will partner with you to create a programme designed with your
organisational and people’s needs in mind. The programme will encourage
them to refine, develop and practice skills they have developed, and to use them
in the workplace to make a difference both to them, the people they manage,
and the organisation.
What does it consist of?
We start by understanding what really makes a difference to your organisation.
Our programmes combine experiential learning, coaching, and action learning
sets with expert facilitation. We can design individual workshops based on a
particular interpersonal skill, or a modular programme delivered over a period of
time that can create lasting behavioural change and allow participants to build
stronger networks and links within your organisation based on a shared
experience.

Life Coaching
Who is this for?
Anyone looking for a safe, agenda-free conversation in which they can explore
either specific challenges in life or a review of their general life direction and
priorities.
What will it give you?
An opportunity to address the questions you have, that no-one else is asking.
Life coaching will provide deeper self-understanding and personal perspective. It
is a rare and precious opportunity to consider how your life is, how you would
like it to be, and how to fill the gap.
What it consists of
An initial conversation with your prospective coach to explore what you would
like to examine further. You will then be able to agree where you would like to
focus further conversations, their frequency and duration, and review points to
see how the coaching relationship is progressing. Conversations will take place
in a place of your choosing. Whilst the coach’s responsibility is for the process of
the conversations, the content and focus is set by the coachee.

Mentoring
Who is this for?
Anyone who wants to draw on the skills and expertise of someone more
experienced to help them grow their own skills and knowledge.
What will it give you?
Mentoring is a way of personal development that allows you to explore your
work with the support of a ‘thinking partner’. You will decide the topic for
discussion and what you want to achieve. Your mentor will support, challenge,
advise and guide you.
Your mentor will help you explore subjects that you choose, offering
observations and their own experiences. They will help you to clarify the
situation, consider the options you have, improve your understanding and to
develop new skills, knowledge and approaches.
What does it consist of?
Mentoring is typically long term, stretching over many months and sometimes
years. Many partnerships will meet monthly for an hour or more but the
frequency and duration will be decided between you. If you develop a good,
trusting relationship, you may schedule ad hoc meetings as the need arises.
Page | 22

Anyone who wants to mentor others, who is currently a mentor or involved in a
workplace mentoring scheme
What will it give you?

development and the skills involved - all steps that will help build the confidence
to mentor.
You will develop a broad understanding of mentoring: the who, what, when,
where, how and why (and their opposites). If you have never mentored before,
you will gain some practical experience by both mentoring and being mentored.
You will learn about ‘best practice’, including the standards and ethics expected
of mentors involved in mentoring at work.
What does it consist of?
An experiential workshop tailored to the needs of the participants, ranging from
a one day introduction to mentoring, through mentoring skills development to a
comprehensive one week course on ‘How to mentor in the workplace’
P a g e | 23

What will it give you?

narrow financial emphasis of many pre-retirement courses.
Your coach will work with you to complete a straightforward plan, incorporating
your future life priorities, how to discover your sense of purpose beyond the
workplace, support your physical and mental health, develop new social
networks, and address the emotional challenges of life after full-time work.
What does it consist of?
Your coach will offer four, one hour coaching sessions in a relaxed setting of
your choosing. Whilst the coach will provide a general outline for the sessions,
you will decide the focus and objectives. Coaching can be offered individually or
to groups.

offer a reality check on their thinking. Some say it is a way to keep sane!

Continuing professional development for coaches
There are a variety of free groups in the York area that support professional
development for coaches.



York Coaching Group runs bi-monthly
evening meetings at York St John
University for coaches and people
training to be coaches
Coaching Masterclasses, also bi-monthly,
explore coaching competencies with coaches and those in
coach-training. In each meeting, the group focuses on one
particular competency, discusses practical issues raised by it,
and provides an opportunity for observed practice of the
competency in question
The York Coaching Circle provides a safe space to develop
coaching abilities, build coaching relationships based on trust
and rapport, and develop skills and learning. In each ‘round’ of
the circle (which typically lasts for about four months) one acts
as coach and another as ‘client’ for a colleague.
