GMES-GATO
• Theme E: Global atmosphere
monitoring
• Topic: Stratospheric ozone and
climate change
• Strand 1: Deliver and learn
• Will serve as input for strand 2
projects
5 June 2003
GMES-GATO presentation at 3rd GMES Forum, Athens
4
Main objective
•To develop a strategy for global
observations of atmospheric
composition (GHG, stratospheric ozone,
tropospheric pollution) within GMES.
•Long term observations and the
effective use of near real-time data will
be addressed.

Project aims
• To develop a strategy for global
atmospheric observations within
GMES
• To promote the use of data for
scientific and public purposes
• To define an integrated observing
system comprising satellite and
ground-based instruments
5 June 2003
GMES-GATO presentation at 3rd GMES Forum, Athens
6
Specific objectives
1. To make an inventory of and define a strategy for the
network of European groundbased measurement
sites,
2. To define a strategy for the integration of different
satellite measurements during the ENVISAT era
(nominally 2002-2008),
3. To define a strategy for the integration of groundbased and satellite measurements as well as data
assimilation and modelling results,
5 June 2003
GMES-GATO presentation at 3rd GMES Forum, Athens
7
Specific objectives
4. To define a strategy for global stratospheric
measurements during the post-ENVISAT era
(nominally 2008 onwards),
5. To define a strategy for ensuring the high quality
(1%) total ozone measurements that are needed for
long-term ozone trend studies,
6. To assess and define a strategy for near real-time
services for the surveillance of the ozone layer, in
particular during Arctic winters,
5 June 2003
GMES-GATO presentation at 3rd GMES Forum, Athens
8
Specific objectives
7. To identify key issues and asses and compare nadir
and limb sounders,
8. To define a strategy for tropospheric measurements
(regional and local/urban)
9. To define the needs of atmospheric data base users,
10. To make an inventory of existing data bases for
ground-based, satellite and meteorological data that
contain data of relevance for stratospheric ozone and
UV radiation,
5 June 2003
GMES-GATO presentation at 3rd GMES Forum, Athens
9
Specific objectives
11. To define how data bases can be harmonised in order
to facilitate access, submission and retrieval of data,
12. To define current limitations of atmospheric data
bases and how these can be alleviated in order to
convert data into information and structured
knowledge,
13. To define how data bases can serve a larger audience
than the specialised scientific community,
5 June 2003
GMES-GATO presentation at 3rd GMES Forum, Athens
10
Specific objectives
14. To establish close links to end users. End
users will be the European Space Agency,
the European Environment Agency and the
World Meteorological Organization as well
as individual scientists,
15. Assess the monitoring needs defined by:
•
•
European policies and directives
Compliance with conventions and treaties
16. Identify possible commonalities between
various networks

To think about
•
How can we combine g-b and satellite
