DELHI JAL BOARD’S PACKAGED DRINKING WATER BOTTLING PLANT Background South Delhi is at the tail end of water-distribution system, there has been water scarcity in this area. In order to meet the increasing demand for drinking water, it was decided by DJB to produce Packaged Drinking Water and make it available for sale in such areas at reasonable price. A Bottling Plant was set up at Greater Kailash, Meter Workshop, Office Complex, Opp-Sadiq Nagar in South Delhi in Aug, 2002 and production 20 Ltr. Packaged Drinking Water “JAL” bottles was started these bottles are being sold to the consumers through Jal Suvidha Kendra. Delhi Jal Board has also started production of 250 ml Packaged Drinking Water glasses recently and the same are available for sale since January 2007. Source of Water The source of water for this project was treated potable Water from Bhagirathi Water Treatment Plant where it is pumped to Greater Kailash (North) Reservoir. The Bottling Plant further purifies this water through activated charcoal and an array of micron filters. The Bottling Plant has been receiving water from Sonia Vihar Water Treatment Plant since Oct,2006, BIS standards This water is being treated as per the latest “BIS norms for Packaged Drinking Water, before filling in the container ( 20 ltrs bottles and 250 ml glasses ). The licence no. for “JAL” brand is IS:14543 CM/L No. 8500666. Licence from B.I.S. had been received in the year 2002. it has been duly renewed over the years Treatment Process The treated water from the Treatment Plant is received at Greater Kailash-I underground reservoir water main named through a Kailash Main. Water from U.G.R is pumped for further processing to treatment unit of Bottling Plant. received is Water suitably dechlorinated by passing it through activated charcoal filter to bring down the chlorine to permissible level i.e. 0.2mg/litre. Other gases, colour and odour if any are removed at this stage. The water is further passed through 5 nos. of micron filters having cartridges of 10, 5, 1 , 0.5, 0.25 microns. These filters remove colloids and organic matter. The final water treated through these stages conforms to the norms laid down by BIS as per IS: 14543 - 1998. Quality ControlVarious parameters are tested as per guide lines of latest BIS standards / norms in accordance with IS: 14543 - 1998, including pesticides etc. The testing is done in the laboratory located at the bottling plant as well as at laboratories approved by BIS from time to time. Jal Suvidha Kendra In order to facilitate the availability of “JAL” to the consumers retail outlets called Jal Suvidha Kendra manned by DJB employees were started.
