French and Indian War
A little Social Studies math ...
The French and Indian War + shots fired at Lexington and Concord
= The American
Revolution
Did the name of the war mislead you? The Frenchand Indian Warwas not fought between France and the
Native Americans.Thesetwo unlikely friends actually worked together against Great Britainduring thiswar. Another
name for the French and Indian War is the Seven YearsWar.That name is not misleading - the fighting did last for
seven years!Therewas fighting all over the world, not just in North America. Thisglobal war started witrl just one small
fight at a Frenchfort in Americal
The Britishand Frenchboth wanted to be powerful in America. TheBritishthought farming and owning and
land was important. and they wanted to claim the land west of the Appalachian Mountains. The Frenchwanted to
claim the same land to trade with Native Americans. Tradingwith the natives made the French economy stronger.
Lots of fur trading took place in the Ohio Territory. The French thought that this land should be theirs since their
explorers arrived in the area first. Thingsgot seriouswhen the Americans and the Britishjoined together to take
action. In 1754.George Washington ied a Britishand American army to attack a French fort. Fort Duquesne. The
Frenchforce was too strong. though. Washingtonand hismen were forced to surrender. When the King of England
heard about this,he was furiousbecause he wanted to win! So.he decided to declare war on France.
Native Americans played a very important part in the war because they fought on the side of the French.
making the French Army much stronger. The Native Americans supported the French because the French only
wanted to trade. not settle on the land. The Native Americans wanted to trade with all Europeans.but they worried
that the Europeanswould take over their land. Before 1750.the Notive Americans living in the Ohio RiverValley had
their own economy built on hunting. fishing. and agriculture The Native Americans did not want their lifestylesto
change. With the help of the Native Americans, the French often beat the Britishsettlers easily and were very
successfulat the beginning of the Frenchand Indian War.
In 1754.a group of American colonistsmet in Albany. New Yorkto talk about the brewing war. Benjamin
Franklinwas one of the colonists. He thought that the colonies should form one government. Thegovernment could
meet together to make decisionsabout issues.like the Frenchand Indian War.Franklin'sidea was called the Albany
Planof Union.Unfortunately.the colonistsdid not like the plan. So.it was up to Great Britainto protect them.
When BritishPrime Minister William Pitt took over control of Britain in 1757.he saw how important the
American colonies were to Britishsuccess. Pitt's ideas helped change the war. He knew that the Britishwould
become the world'smost powerful imperialistnation if they could defeat Francewith the colonists'help.
The French had a number of forts and settlements in the Ohio RiverValley. and Pitt knew attacking the
Frenchthere would not end well for the British. So, Pittdecided to send histroops into Canada instead. Britishforces
attacked the French in the northeastern port of Canada. The Britishwere eventually able to take control of the
entire Great Lakesregion. From there. the Britishalso took control of Quebec. the center of French operations in
Canada. Fromthis moment onr Great Britainand the colonistshaelcontrol of the war.
The war lasted seven years from 1756-1763.It officially ended on February 10. 1763when the Treatyof Paris
was signed; France gave up all of its land in North America. After winning the war, the Britishseized control of
Canada from France and Florida from Spain; Spain had fought on the French side during the war. The war also
changed the relationship between the colonists and the British. In some ways. the colonists gained their
independence from Britainafter the war. Theydid not need Britishprotection from the Frenchanymore. But.the war
left the Britishin debt. TheBritishfelt that the colonistsowed them for the protection they provided during the war. To
make sure they were repaid for the costs of the war, the Britishraised taxes on the colonists. The taxes made the
freedom-loving colonistsvery angry.
FAST FACT: When the Britishcaptured one Frenchsettlement in Canada. they sent the Frenchresidentsliving there to
Louisiana.Thefamily members of the Frenchstilllive in Louisianatoday!
