would like to thank the students, staff
and community that helped to make our
SCC Welcome Back Dance a wonderful
success! We had a great turn out for the
BBQ and the dance and all of the
students had a blast dancing to the
awesome music the student D.J.s
provided! Without everyone’s support we
could not have pulled it off as we are a
small group so
THANK YOU ONE AND ALL!

KINDERGARTEN/ GRADE 1
October is upon us and
with it comes Thanksgiving
and Halloween activities!
Thank you to all the parents
who attended the parent
meeting on September 21st.
The K/1 class has been learning about
“Agriculture in the Classroom”. We have read a
variety of stories and poems related to our class
theme. We will now be doing some stories related
to Fall, Thanksgiving and Halloween.
The Kindergarten class is adjusting well
to the routines at school. They are learning
about the letters of the alphabet and the
numbers and colours. They are also learning to
play cooperatively, take turns, share and make
their own choices during Center Time.
The Grade One class is learning to print
the lower case letters. They are working on
initial and final consonant sounds in Phonics.
They are reading many new words and were very
excited to take home their first booklets to read
to their family. In Math they are learning about
sorting and patterning and the numbers to 20.
In Social Studies they are learning about the
characteristics of a community. They are
learning about senses in Science. They are doing
the basic movement patterns of sending and
receiving in Phys. Ed.
The K/1 class took part in the School
Terry Fox fundraiser. Thank you to all the
parents who sent money for the fundraiser.
We are in need of jack-o-lanterns. If
you have extra pumpkins, please write a note in
the day planner or contact the school. We are
hoping to have a pumpkin for each student to
carve on Friday October 30th at 1:00 after the
costume parade. I am looking forward to seeing
the students dress up for the Halloween parade
which will be at 12:35 p.m. in the gym on October
30th!
Have a Spooktacular Fall!!

GRADE 2/3
The Grade Two and Three students have
been working very hard in class. We have
finished our baseline assessments and now we
know what areas each student needs to work on.
Each student has completed a Diagnostic Reading
Assessment which determined what level
students are able to read independently. This
information will be used to set up our Daily 5
groups. Students are returning their home
reading records and several students have
already read 20 books. Grade Two students are
also working on their sight
word lists. In ELA we have
continued the Bubbles and
Balloon theme. We have
read the following stories
together: Bubble Bubble,
The Ballloon Farm, The
Bubble Factory, and
Bubblemania. We have done written story retells,
video responses, identified favorite parts of the
story, and each student has also written a
patterned writing story which they have shared
with their class. We also learned about
descriptive words and action words and used
them to create poems about BUBBLES.
In Spelling we have completed unit 4 in
Spelling. In Phonics the Grade Two students are
learning about short vowels, and the Grade Three
students are learning about the different sounds
of “C” and “G”.
In Math the Grade Two students have
been working on repeating patterns, and they
have started learning about increasing patterns.
In Math the Grade Three students have been
learning about increasing patterns and have now
begun working with decreasing patterns.
In Arts-Ed we have been working on using
our drawing skills to illustrate some of our ELA
projects. We have also begun to learn about
mime.
In Phys.-Ed we have been learning several
cooperative games, and we have also started
working on soccer skills.
In Science we have learned what FORCE
means and we have identified both contact and
non-contact forces. We know that friction can
change how things move. The non – contact
forces we are learning about are magnetic force,
and static electricity.
In Social Studies the Grade Three
students are reflecting on their family and how
family members help each other out. They have
also explored how they have changed in their life
already.
Our class will be having our BUBBLE
FAIR on the afternoon of Friday October 16th. I
am still in need of a few more volunteers to work
at the stations.
We will be carving pumpkins on October
th
30 at 11:10. Parents are asked to come and
assist with this. We would like to borrow orange
safety carving knives. Please let me know if your
child will have a pumpkin to bring, or if you have
any extra pumpkins.
Students are encouraged to dress up in
the afternoon. Our Halloween activities will begin
with the Halloween Parade which will take place
right after lunch on the 30th. We will be doing
board games in our classroom after the parade.
Students are asked to bring board games. Half
of the class will be asked to provide snacks for
this party. Each student is to bring their own
drink.

GRADE 4/5
September Mission Accomplished! King’s
Awesome Outstanding Students settled in to
classroom routines very quickly and got down to
work. They are learning the importance of good
work habits, listening skills, and team work. They
are up to facing the challenges in all of the
different classes.
Lots has been happening in ELA. We have
incorporated Daily 5 into our routine. In Daily 5,
students rotate between a choice of 5 stations:
Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to
Reading, Word Word and Work on Writing. In
each station, students work on reading and
writing skills. The students have caught on very
quickly to this. In other ELA classes, we are
working on a thematic unit: Imagination and
Fantasy. We watched some very cool i-movies to
introduce the unit and then we have been reading
different texts that fit the fantasy genre. We
are focusing on using before, during and after
reading skills as well as the reading strategies.
In Writing, we use the 6+ Traits of Writing. In
Pre-writing we have learned all about RAFTS
(Role, Audience, Format, Topic and Strong Verb)
and the importance of brainstorming. We used
RAFTS and a web to begin a writing a description
of our own imaginary character or creature.
Students are really enjoying using their
imaginations!
Math class is busy. Following preassessment in both grades, the students in
Grade Four started their first unit on patterns
and equations while the Grade Fives’ first unit is
on whole numbers, place value to 1 000 000 and
how to represent a number in different ways. On
certain days in our timetable, we also have
MATH stations: Math Skills, Assignment at
Desk, Tech Time and Help with Teacher. Tech
time is a class favorite as they love Mathletics
and Prodigy Math.
Students in Grades 4, 5, 6 and 7
participated in a Math Boot Camp. To kick off
the Boot Camp, students ran a few laps and did
some push-ups to get the blood pumping. Mrs.
King and Miss Shillington helped students review
multiplication rules for 0, 1, 2, 5, 9 and 10 and
then the challenge began. Students worked out –
going from station to station. The nine stations
featured five pencil and paper challenges to
correctly put their 0 and 1, 2, 5, 9, and 10 times
to the test and four game challenges: Speed,
Feed the Chickens, Bean Count and Chicken
Race, which was a super fun way to practice.
Math Boot Camp was an awesome way to work
out with multiplication.
With the upcoming Federal election,
we have been learning about the Canadian
government and the election. As Canada is the
focus of our Social Studies curriculum this year,
we are beginning our study of Canada’s Aboriginal
heritage. Miss Shillington is teaching sound for
the first Science unit. Our class really enjoyed a
messy experiment to learn how sound waves
travel. Miss Vannest has been teaching volleyball
skills in Phys Ed, mental wellness in Health, as
well as the elements of art in Arts Ed. The
students are learning some very neat things
about line, shape, texture, form, and more.
Students always look forward to Music/Band,
especially the Grade Fives who were fortunate to
participate in an instrument clinic with Mr. Steve
Mealey and Mrs. Colleen Oscar-Swan. It was an
exciting day when they finally got their
instruments!
Students have also been active in other
activities taking place at Eaton School. There
was lots of participation in the Spirit Week
activities as we dressed up for PJ Day, Animal
Day and Black-out Day. We enjoyed a taco-bag
lunch and Super Happy Fun Time was SUPER!
Some students have been participating in Cross
Country Running and/or Midget Volleyball. We
excitedly cheered on our football and volleyball
teams as their seasons got going. Many of our
class attended the SCC Welcome Back Luau
Dance. Along with the rest of the school, our
class donated to the Terry Fox Foundation to
help in the fight against cancer and participated
in the National School Day Run on September
30th. And, of course, we are also participating in
the band magazine drive.
With the arrival of October, there is
much to look forward to: more volleyball and
football games and tournaments, Thanksgiving,
Halloween and the costume parade, and
community events, too.
- Mrs. Lisa King

SRC REPORT
September was a busy month as
staff and students settled in.
Our big fundraising efforts
were directed towards Terry Fox. We
had a hot lunch, a bake sale, returned
bottles from last year to SARCAN and collected
change in each classroom.
To date, with not all the money totaled,
we have raised $1300 for the Terry Fox
Foundation. Our challenge day on September
30th will include a pie in the face for Mr.
Vanthuyne, Kelsey Guidinger will sport red hair,
Jack Miller will shave his beard, and Garrett King
and Brendan Ritchie will shave legs and wax arms.
We also helped the SCC with their
`Welcome Back to School Luau’, which was
enjoyed by all who came.
Our sports teams have been gearing up
with football games, volleyball tournament and
cross country running.
We put on a combined pep rally for the
Sr. Girls’ Volleyball team and Sr. Boys’ Football
team before their home tournament, and their
home opener.
Four of our senior students went to the
SSLC in Shellbrook, SK and one went to Halifax
for the National Leadership Convention. We
hope to use their enthusiasm and ideas they
learned to “engage” our student body.
We look to have a busy October with
sports and playoffs, our annual Hallowe’en
carnival and other activities to follow.
If you need to find out what’s happening
look at the calendar in the lobby, pop into Mrs.
Filyk’s room or talk to one of the SRC members.

MIDGET VOLLEYBALL
Midget Co-ed Volleyball players hit the
court for the first time on September 14th. An
excited group of Grade 4, 5 and 6 students
turned out to learn and practice their volleyball
skills: bumping, setting and serving. We have
worked on position and rotation. Special thanks
to the Senior Girls volleyball players who are
helping us.
We are in the process of scheduling some
exhibition games against Eston and Kindersley.
Check the Eaton School Facebook page or
Twitter (@eatonspartans) for game days.


JUNIOR BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
The Junior Boys’ volleyball team has had
a fantastic September. After a strong showing
at the R.A.V.E. tournament in Loreburn, the boys
have returned to the gym to practice their skills
for their upcoming busy October season. The
Junior Boys’ team will host league on September
28th and then travel for league on October 6th
and 20th. As well, the boys have October
tournaments on October 3rd, 17th, and 24th.
Cameron, Jacob, Turner, Taylen, Jackson,
Cade, Quinn, Kyle, and Brody have all been
working hard to build their skills and their
efforts are definitely paying off. Mr. Hoult and
Mrs. Facca look forward to seeing the results of
their hard work at their upcoming games.
