Why fluoride varnish? Fluoride varnish is a highly concentrated form

Why fluoride varnish?
Fluoride varnish is a highly concentrated form of fluoride which is applied to the tooth's
surface, by a dentist, dental hygienist or other health care professional. It is applied every
6 months and takes only a few minutes to painlessly paint on. The fluoride makes the
tooth harder and more resistant to decay.
How do I get fluoride varnish applied?
Ask your dental team about fluoride varnish. If during your dental check up you were
assessed as being at high or medium risk of getting holes in their teeth you may be
suitable for having this quick and easy preventive treatment.
Are there other ways of improving the teeth’s resistance to decay?
A free, quick and easy way to improve resistance to decay is not to rinse your mouth with
water after brushing. This gives the fluoride in the toothpaste longer to work and increase
the tooth’s resistance to decay. Research has shown that varnish is the best way of
‘hardening’ the teeth. But ‘spitting not rinsing’ can be done as well as having the varnish
applied.
