The big day
by Irina
Hello my name is Irina and I'm 18 years old and
I’m currently living in London for 5 months.
So today finally came the big day. We left for
London. We were all very excited but a little bit
sad at the same time because we had to say
goodbye to our families.
At 8 am we met at the airport. The group checkin was easy and luckily they didn't weigh our
suitcases ;). We said goodbye to our families and
got on the plane. When we arrived at Heathrow
airport the buses which brought us to our
families were already there. We got separated
into groups and bit by bit we got dropped off the
bus and said hello to our host family. We got our
instructions and then we had some time to
My first ride on the tub
organize ourselves and our rooms. Luckily I got a
nice room with a big bed. Others sadly have to
change their families. Two hours later we
already met at the school and received some
more information. The day slowly ended and we
all went to bed early.
The next day began and we had our first school
day. We got separated into two groups and had
some general English lessons in the morning and
business English lessons in the afternoon. At the
end of school some friends and I wanted to visit
Camden town, so we did. We took a walk
through the streets, equipped our phones with a
new sim card and had a nice meal at an Italian
place.

Hello London I’m here!
by Sabrina
Hello my name is Sabrina. I’m sixteen years old
and I’m here in London to improve my English
skills and also to work in an English company for
nearly four months. After six weeks of English
the Madame Tussauds. I’ve already been there
once but it’s absolutely worth it to see these
unique wax figures again! On Sunday we’ll be
doing a bit of sightseeing.
I’m anxious to see what London offers me next
week!
classes I’m going to work in St Giles’ front office.
I’m very excited!
We have been in London for five days now. My
first impression was very good because I’ve
already met my future supervisor from St Giles
at the airport. She organized our oyster cards
and handed them over to us. The school itself is
just too much! It’s placed in a natural area and
the teachers are all very helpful and full of
energy. In our morning class we have students
from other countries so we can improve our
English skills even more.
I love the typical London houses.
My host family is absolutely lovely! They take
care of me and also want to know how I feel. My
host mother prepares my bed every day and
makes sure everything is clean. (Of course there
is not much to be cleaned in my room;))
Every day I get a bit more used to the huge
amount of bus lines and the different directions
of travel. For example, in my district there are so
many ways to get to St Giles. Nearby I have
three little villages where I can get all sorts of
useful things.
On Wednesday my friends and I went to a
bowling house near Finsbury park. This was one
of the weekly school events which are offered. A
teacher from St Giles and another student were
also there and we enjoyed a great evening with
a lot of talking about different subjects and of
course bowling.
Tomorrow is Saturday so my friends and I are
going to explore central London. In the morning
we go to another school event which is to visit

Our first steps
by Rasha
Hi everyone, my name is Rasha and I’m 20 years
old. I used to live in a small part of Lucerne with
my family. Now though, I’m living in London and
I’m really excited about it.
I always told my friends and family that one day I
will leave the country in which I grew up.
We left Switzerland on Sunday morning and
arrived in London at around 11 AM. The taxi
driver drove us to our host families: I was
surprised after I saw how my host family’s house
was, especially my room. In the evening, we met
Mr. Spielhofer at the school we are going to visit
the next 6 weeks. Fortunately, I could arrange
sleeping at Kim’s host family for the first two
nights. After the first day at school, which was
really interesting, I met my second host family.
Leaving Switzerland
Sadly, this was no better place to stay at for the
next months. I spent two nights there and I
couldn’t wait to pack my bags and leave this
house. My new and hopefully last host mother
will be welcoming me on Monday. Until then,
I’m staying at a hotel. I’m trying to make the
most out of each day. Therefore, whenever I
come back, I’m really tired and sleepy. All in all,
I’m in love with London so far. The people, the
places, the atmosphere! I’m trying to share a
part of my trip in my video. Simon was, and still
is, a big part of the video production. I’m really
thankful for his help. Enjoy watching, lots more
to come!

and I don’t think that that was the last time I’m
going to go there. It was really beautiful.
Afterwards I checked out some Japanese stores,

old. I'm currently living in London with a lovely
host family and I am lucky to spend 5 months in
this beautiful city with my classmates.
We've been here now for exactly 2 weeks and I
must say I’m adapting really quickly. To get to
know London better I first of all visited some of
the most famous places and attractions. There
are still many to go but I’ve been to the ones we
hear a lot about like Big Ben, London eye,
Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar square etc. I’m
getting used to taking the tube or bus and I think
everything can be reached quite easily.
Our school St. Giles is situated in such a nice
area and I really like to go there. In the morning
we are a very international class and it’s

interesting to get to know other cultures and
mentalities. My teacher Ellen is such a kind
person and she makes each lesson very fun. In
the afternoon it’s stricter because we have to be
focused on learning business English vocabulary
and prepare for the BEC Higher exam. All in all,
I’m sure we’ll improve our English from day to
day.
The two weekends we had so far were spent
really adventurously. We were lucky with the
weather so far so we could visit parks and
attractions as mentioned above. I have also gone
shopping already with friends whether it was at
Oxford Street, Camden Town or Westfield
shopping centre. It has just too many good
stores that we don’t have in Switzerland (for
example Primark or Topshop). One night we
went to the cinema and watched ‘Bad Moms’. It
was so funny and we had like big popcorn bags,
which made us enjoy the movie even more.

Our first weeks in a city that never sleeps
by Lena-Sophia
After a great day in London with new stunning
experiences we went home tiredly to get up the
next day for some more sightseeing.
Hello everyone, my name is Lena-Sophia, I`m 19
years old and I`m currently living in London.
In Switzerland, I lived in a small village which is
really a completely different world than the big
city of London.
Our first weeks here were filled with
acclimation, getting to know our host families
better and of course discovering London. And so
the first two weeks went by in a flash as already
the second weekend dawned.
Kensington Palace
On Saturday morning we left the house at 11:00
am, took the tube and went to the Sky Garden, a
high building with the nickname “The WalkieTalkie” in the centre of London with a big terrace
from where you have a breath-taking view of
London. Having arrived there, we unfortunately
realized that you have to book tickets 3 weeks in
advance just to even get in. So we just decided
to come back someday and instead going to visit
the Kensington Palace. We took the Tube again,
went to the Queensway Station, walked through
Hyde Park and went to the Kensington Palace.
There we could marvel at some of Princess
Diana’s dresses and old rooms where the Queen
lived which was quite interesting. After spending
2 hours there we got hungry and decided to take
the tube to Leicester Square to eat something.
There we found a nice little Italian restaurant
where we had delicious pizza and some pasta.
After that we watched a great show by some
street artists which was really worth seeing.
As it suddenly started to rain heavily, we
escaped to the M & M`s world and bought some
souvenirs for the people at home.

Getting used to everything
by Irina
Hi it's Irina again. This is now my second blog
post. I have been in London for nearly 4 weeks.
Wow already 1 month. Maybe you wouldn’t
believe it but time flies so fast here.
I'm already used to my daily programme and
waking up in a different family is already totally
normal. We all even got used to the very hot and
crowded tube in the rush hour.
Inside huge Westfield Shopping Centre
For lunch we eat at the canteen in the school
because the food is really good and the
atmosphere with all the other students very
amusing. In school we started practising for our
BEC higher exam. I passed the BEC vantage but I
really underestimated the level of the BEC
higher. The vocabulary is so difficult but I think I
get used to the business words once I start
working in my company.
One of my favourite places is Leicester square.
We go there a lot because every day there is
another act on the street. We saw singers,
dancers, magicians, comedians and acrobats.
There are also a lot of nice different restaurants
around the square. Really special is also that
there are 3 big cinemas around. They are so big
they even have a balcony sometimes.
Today I visited my future company for the first
time just to get some information and to
introduce myself. The people there are very nice
and my little working place also seems very cute.
So I'm very excited for my first working
experience in the company.
Everyday there's so much going on and there is
always something new to see, so when I'm home
I'm really tired and fall asleep quickly.

Last weekend my parents visited me and we

emphasis on “walking”. ;) I was the tour guide
and so we explored the city and visited some
nice places like the princess Diana Memorial and
the Tate Modern Café. There we had a lovely

had to recharge our batteries for a moment
before we went up to the 15th floor to eat dinner

we were hungry so we looked for a good

another wonderful day!

about the atmosphere and the off-the-beatentrack places.

Big City Life

Hi everyone out there, it`s Lena again. Our
school time here in London has ended and I

William was celebrated. Lucky us, on the day

At the end of the day we ate dinner at the

Anyway I`m going to let you know about the
weekend when we finally went to Sky Garden.
On Saturday morning we got up, took the tube

little bit cloudy but that couldn`t worsen our
good mood. Once there, we had to pass a really
strict security check and after that we waited for
the lift which took us 155 metres up in just 10
seconds. After all we reached the top, we had a

there is a bar and some restaurants, which
looked really nice. If you visit London someday,
Sky Garden is definitely a thing to do which I

interesting. You could see all the rooms where

My first work experience in London
by Pamela
I started my internship in London. I work at a
language school called “International House”.
The language school is situated in Covent
Garden; it’s a part of Central London. Covent
Garden is a short walk from Oxford Street,
Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus. The
working times in London are unlike the working
times in Switzerland. While Swiss people start
working around 7:00 am or 8:00 am, people
from London start working at 9:00 am or even at
10:00 am. Lunchtime here is between 1:00 am
and 2:30 pm whereas Swiss people tend to eat
lunch at 12:00 noon or at 1 pm. The working day
mostly ends at 5:00 pm just like in Switzerland.
Picture: This is my workplace I share with my
supervisor, which is also the entry of the
Executive Centre.
My working place in London
The language school I work at focuses on
Business English, so I’m using a lot of Business
Vocabulary, which helps me improve my
Business language for the BEC-Higher Exam. The
BEC-Higher Exam will take place in November.
I work on the fifth floor in the Executive Centre.
Today, on my first day my supervisor helped me
to install my E-mail and the entire login’s. She
also introduced me to some colleagues and
showed me the whole school. The people are
very friendly and polite with me and welcome
me happily. My supervisor explained what tasks

I’m going to be the contact person for student
inquiries and pick up the phone if agencies call
to book a language stay for their clients. Today I
could help some of the students and answer
some simple questions.
I need to know the most popular course prices
and how much the total costs so I can counsel
them and help them to find the best price for
their client.
I’m really looking forward to start taking over my
first responsibilities.

Our first working experience – and trips we
took
by Irina
Hi It's me again. This week’s blog is about our
trips and our internship we just started. It was
very exciting for all of us considering this is the
first working experience for most of us.
I had the feeling that the six weeks of school we
had, were some of the fastest weeks I've ever
had. I really mean, when we just started to get
the hang of it, we were thrown out of our
rhythm again. Two weeks ago we all started our
internships in different companies. My working
place is a nice small office room with just five
employers. I think I’m getting along with my
work well even though this is my first working
experience. To just use English the whole day
and just work in English was easier than I
imagined. I don’t think about speaking English
anymore, I just do. A few days ago I even had my
first phone call at the office. I was really nervous
but I could manage it well. I'm still figuring out
the best way to go to work, because different to
my way to school, I can't just go on the tube, go
out of the tube and be at the school. Now either
way I have to get on the tube, change it and take
a bus, go on the tube and take a bus or just take
a bus. But the traffic here in the morning is really
bad and the bus is so full in the morning that I
had to stand in the bus for 1 1/2 hours. So I'm
still trying out the different ways of travelling.
Otherwise I can't complain about my life here. I
enjoy it with all its sides.
If you like creepy things, I can recommend
visiting the Highgate cemetery. It's a really old
and famous cemetery where also a lot of famous
people lie. It is so old that at some places the
trees even grow through old graves. The
atmosphere is so special there that you easily
get goosebumps on your arms.
A few weeks ago we went to see the award

so I'm definitely going to watch it again with my
family when they are coming to visit me. Even if
you are not a big fan of musicals I can really
recommend going there.

Since we’ve been here we took a lot of trips.
One time we went to Brighton. I’ve already
visited Brighton when I was here for holidays but
it was still beautiful even the second time. It's
right at the sea and you feel like you're in
another country. The weather was really good
although it was really windy. We enjoyed sitting
by the sea and just relax and listen to the sea
and the seagulls.

In the working mood
by Sabrina
Now we have officially started working. I have to
say I wasn’t too nervous on my first day because
many teachers and office workers I’ve already
seen in the corridor or spoken to at the front
office. As expected everyone was really nice and
friendly. (They still are!)
But let’s quickly go back some days. I
experienced a wonderful 17th birthday with my
friends in a Jamie Oliver pub. The number of
presents I got is just too much! But it wasn’t the
presents which made this evening so wonderful
and unique. It was the fact that I could spend it
with four of my best friends. Thank you so
much!
this programme. Another thing I deal with are
the students’ certificates. At the end of every
week I need to prepare personalised envelopes
and put in the appropriate certificate for the
leaving student.
There are many other things to do and I’m glad
to have a notebook where I can write down the
steps of more complicated tasks since I know
one day I’ll have to deal with those on my own.
I’m excited to learn more in the following
weeks!
Between then and now my uncle and my aunt
came to visit me. They stayed 7 days and we
nearly spent every day/evening together. I was
very happy to see them again! One Sunday we
visited the Natural History Museum near the
South Kensington Tube station. This museum is
huge and after about 2 ½ hours I had a
headache, although the dinosaurs and special
exhibitions were impressive. After this visit we
spent some time in Hide Park and had a look at
some pieces of art. One evening we sat in a
lovely restaurant next to the Thames on the
North side and enjoyed a delicious dinner. These
days have flown by too fast!
After the gorgeous musical “The lion king” a few
weeks ago it was time for another musical
called, “Matilda”. It’s about a smart little girl
with horrible parents. They don’t treat her well
but Matilda knows how to strike back. Luckily
the story has a happy-end.
Back to my work experience. I now slowly get
used to the daily office tasks and the way to deal
with student desires. Every day I get to learn
something new. I for example have to check
student information on a programme called
“Class”. Basically everything I need to know
about the student and his/her stay is saved on

Busy, busy, busy...by Kimberley
It’s already been three weeks since we started at
our work placement and lots of things have
happened. I’ve visited many more places and I
want to share some of them with you.
Naturally, I’m also going to speak about my work
a bit.
It’s been even more hectic than when I was at
school. The change from school to working is
taking its toll on me and I’ve been more tired
recently. I still want to visit so many places and I
have to practice for the BEC Higher exam, while
also doing some French homework. So as you can
imagine sleep falls pretty short on my list of
chores. But I don’t mind. I’ve managed somehow
until now.
The first impression of my work placement wasn’t
the best. No one had time to properly take care
of us because they hit a busy spell in the office, so
we spent a lot of time just waiting around. Two of
us didn’t want to carry on with their internship in
that company, so they decided to leave. The rest
of us decided to stay on to wait and see how
things would develop, which was worth it. The
people at work are so nice and welcoming and
with a bit of communication, I think that all
problems can be solved. It’s gotten much better
since the start and next week we’ll be able to
really start with tasks.
As for the places I visited since last time: One
Sunday I went to a Japanese Matsuri Festival with
a Japanese friend from St. Giles. It was packed,
but then again events like these always are. I
should have known as I’ve been to events like
these back in Switzerland. But it’s always a nice
experience and I had fun.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t spared from the illness
bug that seemed to float around and I caught a
bad cold for a week. I was really annoyed because
I had to cancel a lot of things which I had planned,
but I’m better know and I made up for the lost
time since then.
Of course, I couldn’t leave out going to a musical
while here in London, the musical metropolis,
and I went to see Lion King and Matilda until now.
The Lion King was so nostalgic, with all the songs
and the story, which I hadn’t heard or seen since
I was a child. It was beautifully made and very
enjoyable. On the other hand, I didn’t know what
to expect from Matilda. I hadn’t seen the movie
before and I didn’t know what it was about. Mindblowing. That’s the only thing I can say about it. I
think I liked it even better than Lion King. The
performance was great, especially the ones of the
children. And the story was beautiful too. I lived
through so many emotions watching it.
Enjoyment, laughter, sadness, happiness. I
definitely recommend seeing it if you’re ever in
London. I know I wouldn’t mind seeing it again,
that’s how great it was. I should go and watch
some more as long as I’m here.
I finally gathered myself up and went on a
weekend trip to Oxford, Windsor and Eton. And I
must say, it was worth it. Eton and Windsor are
such beautiful little towns and they have a real
homely feel to them with all those old streets and
cute English houses. I especially liked that you
could see a few remnants of the past. It was very
interesting to hear about those. And I was so
surprised to hear that the pavilion in the park that
we saw, was the present of the population of
Windsor for the Queens 90th birthday.
Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to visit the
castle, which I’ll definitely be doing in the near
future. Oxford, on the other hand, was just
inspiring. Seeing all those universities and
colleges, especially Christ Church College (where
a few Harry Potter scenes were filmed), and all
the students that I was able to see on that day
wearing their uniforms, has definitely opened my
eyes and given me a new perspective of what my
future could be/hold.
Now that I know how things work a little better
and I’ve settled in, I can much better plan and
organize the remaining sights and weekend trips
I want to do. I want to see as much as I can while
I’m here so that I won’t have any regrets when I
return.

New everyday life
by Jessica
Hi guys. In this blog post I will tell you all about
my workplace and other things I’ve been up
to.
The company I work for is called PSL
Recruitment Services and is situated in Angel,
Central London. It is a very nice area with
many restaurants and shops around. It takes
me about 45 minutes to get there. Luckily, I
start work at 10 a.m. and finish at 4 p.m.
already. It’s rather a short but intensive and
super interesting day I spend at the office. The
company recruits candidates with clinical
experience for hospitals and other managers.
Since my boss and supervisor both are
experienced healthcare clinicians and have
worked as physiotherapists before they have a
lot of knowledge to impart to me. Almost
every day we have candidates coming in for an
interview and attending them is one of the
most interesting parts for me. We are a small
team of 8 people and the company fosters a
personal environment. The people I work with
are all kind and helpful and I feel very
comfortable working here.

good but we ended up eating Bratwurst with
Roesti and for dessert a chocolate fondue. It
was delicious and next time I’ll take my friends
there.
Now I am extremely excited for Halloween
next weekend! My friends who study here
have organized a Halloween party at a club. So
excited to go there…dressed up as a vampire

Last Sunday, thousands of people celebrated
the 15th year of London’s Diwali festival (Hindu
festival of light) at Trafalgar Square. And my
friend Abby and I were involved as well! There
was live entertainment throughout the whole
day with dancers, singing, and food but also
stalls where you could get Henna tattoos or
try on a sari (traditional Indian dress). The
actual Diwali falls on October 30 so the UK
pre-celebrated.
As I am really missing Swiss food I went to this

The best weekend so far
by Lena-Sophia
Hi guys, it`s Lena again. So much happened over
the last few weeks, we started working, my
family visited me and my boyfriend came over
for the weekend.
And this weekend is what I`m going to let you
know about now.
it. But the highlight on Monday was definitely
our ride on the London Eye at night. Luckily we
booked fast track tickets, so we didn`t have to
wait long. Up there the view over London with
those millions of lights was incredible. So as you
can see, we had a fantastic weekend in this
exciting city and I`m really looking forward to
seeing my boyfriend again in 3 weeks when he`s
back in the city. You`ll hear from me in a few
weeks, have a good time!
The last weekend was the weekend my
boyfriend visited me here in London and I think
it was the best weekend so far because without
wanting to sound kitschy, there is almost
nobody else who makes me as happy as he does
and I really missed him. So on Friday he picked
me up from the railway station and it was a
great feeling having him back because you know
it isn`t always that easy to have a long-distance
relationship while you`re still young,
nevertheless I think we`re really getting on well
with it. First we checked in at our hotel and after
that we went to Westfield Shopping Centre on
Friday night because he wanted to buy a new
jacket and I wanted to eat at Nando`s which is
both possible at Westfield (really worth a visit).
On Saturday we visited the London Dungeon,
which is kind of a chamber of horror. I was so
scared the whole time because even though it’s
really interesting and stunning, it`s also spooky
and frightening. Afterwards we went to
Chiquito, a Mexican restaurant, for dinner.
Relaxed, on Sunday morning we went to sky
garden where we had a great time even though
it was raining and we couldn`t go out on the
terrace. Subsequently we went to a nice Swiss
restaurant where we had some fondue for
dinner.
London Eye
Monday at lunch I had a little surprise for my
boyfriend. I booked a table in a well-known
restaurant of Jamie Oliver. Our meal there was
unbelievably good and I think he really enjoyed

So if you plan to go out on Halloween, I advise

just sell Halloween stuff, but also really crazy
clothes, make-up and accessories. When you go
into the shop there are neon lights and they play
really loud techno music and every worker is

As you know form my last blogs, I work in
Covent Garden which is Central London. It’s a
beautiful part of London and there are a lot of
cute little cafés and restaurants there. On

I also noticed how fast time flies here.

What I personally will miss for sure, when I get

Besides getting nervous and worrying about my

came here. It was a long day trip because they
were open until 9.00 pm thanks to their
Halloween attractions. I would say it’s more
something for a family with kids, but I still
enjoyed myself. It was really interesting to learn
about the castle's history and it’s an impressive
site. I always loved castles and this one didn’t
disappoint me. You could literally feel those
medieval vibes. It was surrounded by trees and
green fields, which I thought helped to create a
lovely atmosphere. I did my first Dungeon
experience there and I must say that it wasn’t

from my mum and this time she came along with
my godmother. I really appreciated that my
godmother made the effort to come and visit me
in London as she doesn’t get to travel a lot and
hardly speaks any English.
Of course, I also met up with my friends a few
times since I last wrote. Not so much now that
we are working, but we still try to see each other
frequently. We went to the Science Museum
together, which seemed to me like a mix
between the Transport Museum in Lucerne and
the Technorama in Winterthur. We’ve also been
to dinner at a few places. For example, at Meat

On Friday evening, we went to the Shard and
had delicious Chinese food at the Hutong

there is just breath-taking. For me London is
definitely the city of lights.
On Saturday, my cousin and I went shopping at

I enjoyed the next day with my family at the

opposite the Westminster area. Fortunately, we
got very lucky with the weather on my birthday.
In the afternoon I had to say goodbye to them
because they headed back home but I could

as we arrived there everyone just got more and

Hi, so last week we had our BEC Higher exam. As
part of this education we are doing the highest
business English exam. While I passed the BEC
Vantage exam last year with a good grade, I`m
not so certain about this one. But I keep thinking
positively. The level really rose sharply between
these 2 exams.
The exam took place on a Saturday and it took
the whole day. In the morning we first had the
reading part for one hour. And I tell you, time
was really tight. Next we had our writing and

due to the fact the reading part is mostly the

Christmas time is here
by Kimberley
Wow, this is already my 5th blog. Time has flown
by so fast I can’t believe it’s nearly Christmas and
we’ll be going home to Switzerland soon for the
Christmas period.
The Christmas cheer has taken over this city.
Everywhere you go, you’ll see beautiful Christmas
lights and decorations. Not to forget those
Christmas shoppers. I faced them one Saturday
and I never want to go through that experience
again. It was ten times worse than in Switzerland
and it isn’t even close to Christmas yet. Even at
my workplace people have gotten into the
Christmas Spirit. Together with a colleague I got
to put up and decorate a Christmas tree in the
office’s waiting room. It was fun and now every
time I see it when I come in in the morning, it
cheers me up and seems to inspire me for work.
The atmosphere in the office changed too in my
opinion and everyone seems more cheerful. My
work experience up until now was ok I guess. We
have mostly been cataloguing and updating files,
which becomes a little boring after a while when
you have to do it for several weeks at a time. This
week we received the “get go” for answering
online chats, which has me excited. We didn’t
have any customer contact yet, so I’m looking
forward to implementing the things I learned
during training and getting used to speaking to
customers. Up to this time, I got to have a deeper
insight on how the insurance industry works,
which I’m sure will benefit me greatly in the
future. And at least after working in the insurance
industry, I can say that I don’t want to work in this
sector after my education.
Now on to another topic: I got a visit from my
parents one weekend. It was fantastic. The last
few times they came was always during the week,
which meant that we couldn’t spend so much
time together. On Saturday, we visited the
Portobello market at my father’s request as he
always wanted to see Portobello Road. Later that
evening we went to watch Fantastic Beasts and
Where to Find Them. I loved it. I highly
recommend seeing it, if you haven’t already done
so. The next day we went to the Christmas market
at the Southbank Centre. It was fun and we found
some Christmas presents, but in hindsight I was
disappointed that we didn’t choose to go to the
Winter Wonderland Christmas market together. I
went with a friend on a later date and it was
incredible. The Christmas atmosphere there was
amazing. It really was a Wonderland in Winter.
I’m definitely going again if I find the time.
At another weekend, I tried to tick off some of the
places I still want to visit before I go home. I spent
a morning in Hamley’s, which is a giant toy shop
for those who didn’t know. After that, I made my
way to Primrose Hill and climbed to the top
where I got a beautiful skyline view of the city. To
get to the next thing on my agenda I had a
leisurely stroll through Regents Park to the
Sherlock Holmes Museum. It was interesting to
see and I went a bit crazy in the gift shop. On
Sunday I finally went to Camden Market. It was a
pleasant experience, but I still didn’t find a
present for my Secret Sancta. I’m starting to
despair. Eventually, I’ll have to visit every market
there is until I hopefully find a suitable present.
Just my luck to get the one person in the family
for whom it’s so hard to buy for.
Besides worrying over my presents shopping, I’m
madly working on my IPT. There’s just no minute
to relax. I’m glad when I’m going to be back in
Switzerland again. Ten whole days to just relax.
I’m going to milk them for all that they’re worth
because it’s going to get tough again in January as
we try to finish everything for the final part of our
stay. Until next time. Merry Christmas and a
Happy New Year everyone!

on, we went to the Pier, had good crepes

The journey is not finished – still it’s my last
blog!
by Irina
Hi, it’s me Irina once again. Sadly, I have to say
that this will be my last blog. But anyway I will
tell you how my working experience is going and
what the winter in London feels like.
I’m still very happy with my working place, even
though a lot has changed now. My supervisor
cut down her working days and is only in the
office 3 days a week. First it was just me and one
other intern. But this intern also stopped
working now because it was planned anyway
that he will only stay for some months. But now
on two days of the week, I’m alone in the office.
Sometimes the boss shows up but not for long
because he has to attend client meetings. Since
I’m alone I have even more responsibilities but
still I’m not allowed to send documents to
clients without getting them checked first from
my supervisor. I just have to do them and wait
until the next day for it to be checked.
looking around. However, we were more
interested in the roller coasters and fun houses.
When eating churros and drinking mulled wine
(Glühwein) I even felt like I was at home for a
moment. Everything in general in London is
decorated so festively and Christmassy, it’s
impossible not to get in the Christmas mood.
When it’s dark outside but cloudy, you can even
see all the lights reflecting in the sky.
Last week I went to Leicester square and there
was a movie premiere of a new movie with Will
Smith that is coming out. It was so exciting for
me to see the scenery because I get fascinated
by the movie world so fast. I could even take a
quite good look at Will Smith when he stood on
a podium.
So, this was my last blog about my adventure in
London. I have really enjoyed every single day of
it so far and I’m very grateful to have the
privilege to be here.
Thank you for reading my blog, goodbye and I
hope you have a great Christmas and a fresh
new start into the year 2017!
However, since it’s Christmas time, things are a
lot quieter in the office. Due to the fact that I
work in a building company, it’s obvious that no
one wants to start a new job at Christmas and
New Year because it’s so busy and you have
guests etc.
On the 23rd of December we will fly home for
Christmas and New Year. I’m really looking
forward to that. Just to see my family and
friends again and just the feeling of being home.
I mean I also feel home at my host families
house but it’s different.

Home sweet home
by Sabrina
A couple of days ago was the Holy Night, it was
Christmas Eve! I spent the evening with my
loved ones and together we had a wonderful
time.
Last Friday we flew back to Switzerland. We had
to be ready at 8 o’clock as the group taxis picked
us up between 8 and 9. After the driver picked
me and my group up, we drove to Heathrow
airport and met the others there. Different from
our first flight form Zürich to Heathrow on the
21st of August, we had to board and check-in on
our own. It all went well so my friends and I
spent approximately three hours sitting and
chatting in a cafe waiting for the information
where to go for our plane. Although I’m always
nervous about flying, everything went without
problems and we touched down safely in Zürich
at about 16:50 local time.
The weeks before our departure we celebrate
pre-Christmas at St Giles. On the 9th of
December there was a huge X-mas lunch in the
canteen. Every student could buy a ticket and
take part at this lovely event. The canteen team
prepared a massive turkey and after lunch we
sang Christmas carols in different languages.
This was great fun. In the evening the teachers
and the office team, which I am a part of, went
to the pub “The Grafton” and enjoyed a second
meal and some fun games.
I’m excited about the new people as it means I
have enough to do! I don’t like it if I have
nothing to do and as this was the case in the last
few weeks I’m really looking forward to January.
Mostly, I was done with my daily work in about
an hour so I just continued working on my
documentation or did some French homework.
This wasn’t really a pleasure I have to say. Don’t
get me wrong but if I’m at work I would like to
work and not doing something else. Well it also
had a good side. I had to study less at home.
On my last day at work, a miracle happened. We
finally received our BEC Higher exam results! I
never ever believed I would pass. But I did! At
that moment I nearly started crying and basically
couldn’t deal with so much happiness at once.
Now, I have a C1 level in Business English.
This was my last blog. I hope you all enjoyed
reading it. I definitely enjoyed writing about my
experiences in London.
Thanks very much for the support and the
opportunity to study English abroad!
I wish you all a happy New Year!
Although the holiday break was close, we had
around 10 new students arriving on the last
Monday. I guess most of them are staying in
London until the school opens again on Tuesday
the 3rd of January 2017. Monday is a bank
holiday. St Giles has a lot of bookings for January
so I had to prepare everything before I went
home for my own break. This especially includes
the orientation packs. Those packs full of
worksheets and laminated papers are made for
the first few lessons before the students are sent
into their class. In the orientation they first
absolve a placement test to see what English
level they have. After, they get some
information for example about how the tube
works or about St Giles and who they need to
ask if they’ve got any questions.

Getting close to the finishing line
by Kimberley
Welcome to my final blog on this website. It has
been a great journey and I enjoyed sharing it
with you. So for the last time I’m going to tell
you what has been going on in the past weeks
and also share my future plans for the last weeks
in London.
A few weeks ago I downloaded an app called
Fever. On it you can choose a city and activities
that could interest you, which the app then
proceeds to find. When I did it, the Harry Potter
Knight Bus Tour came up. I decided to check it
out because it sounded interesting and I wasn’t
disappointed. Altogether we were eight people
and the guide took us around London in our very
own bus to go and visit all the sights which
appear in the Harry Potter movies. I met a new
friend there and we ended up spending the
whole day together.
studios as well as a weekend trip to
Edinburgh. Cambridge is next on my list. Other
than that I will visit some more places in
London, go and see a pantomime and maybe
one more musical. I’m so excited. It’s going to
be great. Not even the thought of my French
homework or the IPT and the presentation can
stop me from enjoying the last weeks.
After all that excitement I will be grateful for a
bit of peace and quiet when I’m back in
Switzerland. What the ten days over Christmas
taught me was that I want to live in an English
speaking country, but not in London. It was a
bit too hectic for me there at times. I would
like to take this opportunity to say a big thank
you to everyone who has made it possible for
us to have this experience as part of our
education. Well this is it – take care and stay
safe.
Other than that my time was mostly consumed
by finishing and handing in the first two parts of
the IPT. But there was no time to relax as the
company began to pile task after task on us at
the same time. It became pretty stressful for us,
especially because it was a few days before we
flew out. But I guess it was a good experience as
in the real working world not everything will go
smoothly and there will probably be times
where one will get lots of tasks at once and get
stressed out. News that cheered me right up
were the results of the BEC Higher. I passed it. I
was elated and relieved.
In my free time I was on the hunt for my last
Christmas presents. I’m so glad that I got
everything. It’s the first year where I was
remotely organised and finished a week before
Christmas with getting all of them together. I
have the markets to thank for that.
On the last Sunday before we went back to
Switzerland, my friends and I had a night out
at a pub, where I had a delicious Sunday roast,
