Blessed Charles de Foucauld
On December 1st, 1916, Blessed Charles de Foucauld died
at Tamanrasset, Algeria. Charles, a Trappist priest, had
gone to Algeria to live with those who were most forgotten
and most abandoned. His wish was to bring the light of the
Gospel to those who hadn't heard it. His hope was that
they would say, 'If this is how the servant is and lives, then
what of the Master?'.
According to Charles, God's infinite humility is the special
hallmark of what we celebrate at Christmas:- 'God, the infinite, the perfect, the all powerful Creator, immense, sovereign master of all, became a man, uniting himself to a human body and soul, and appearing on earth as the least of
men. . . He was born, He lived, and He died in the most terrible conditions, taking for the sake of all the last place so
that no one could be in a lower condition than he'.

Charles knew from prayerful reading of the Gospel that
Jesus came amongst us in a 'a close and familiar way'. This
was the pattern of the life of Christ from his birth to the
Ascension, and it is the way He makes himself alive in the
Most Holy Eucharist. It is the way, Charles says, Jesus
wants us to live with each other. We are not strangers to
each other. Charles marvelled that Jesus who said 'This is
my body' also said 'so long as you did it to the least of
these, you did it to me'. Charles, following Jesus, tried to
love everyone as an equal, a brother or sister, with great
humility, respect and selfless generosity.
