SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS :
Pastel crayons give a fine and accurate line, the relative hardness of the lead
enables the perspective of the inside of a house,an armchair, the complex
details of wallpaper or the folds of a curtain to be drawn (particularly in
small format).
Ref.:500071 4
Ref.:010429 2
GENERAL USE :
In contrast to soft pastel,it is unnecessary to use primer layers and successive
additions of colour. You must therefore use the entire range of colours in
your assortment, taking care not to tarnish the bright colours,by laying
them in a patchwork of pure colours side by side (so as not to dull the
shades).

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE :
Use the black or sepia pastel crayon for sketching. You must pay great
attention to the initial sketching phase because it will be tricky to restructure
any small errors later on.We recommend that you use the colour closest to
the original colour that you have observed, for instance,to obtain the colour
of a bright red armchair:Use vermilion red then purple to stress the volumes
of the armrests and finish off with black for the deepest shadows of the
object,as well as Naples yellow and white for the lightest areas.
You can also obtain
an interesting variety
of strokes:graphic
treatment if you use
hatching (technique
used by Degas and
Lautrec) or by
shading off with the
fingers to create
volumes with greater
softness and velvety
texture.
Useful hint :
Work from the top
downwards on the
sheet because your
palm resting on the
paper will tend to
tarnish the colours.

LANDSCAPE
1 7 9 5
HISTORY :
In 1795, Nicolas-Jacques Conté perfected the quality and manufacture of
pencil leads in the colours used by the Italian artists of the 14th century.
Many artists and gr and master s subsequentl y used the Conté à Par is
pastels owing to the quality of the pigments used,
their lightf astness,
brightness and the outstanding pur ity of the colours.
CHARACTERISTICS :
The soft pastels (diameter 8mm,
length 70mm) and pastel cr ayons
have a balanced range of 48 bright
colours. The exceptional diameter
of the Conté à Par is pastel cr ayon
lead (5mm) gives genuine freedom
of creation and has and unr ivalled
feel. All our pastels ar e pr oduced
from the finest selected pigments.
The pastel cr ayon is the perf ect companion to soft pastel because its
lead is slightly harder with less pigment. It is preferable to Conté à Paris
soft pastels and carres when detail is required for small and medium sized
formats.
In contrast to soft pastels, you are advised not to add pastel crayons in
successive layers, but to use the pure tones selected from your assortment.
For instance: When you draw a summer sky, do not use primer layers but
the dif ferent tones of b lue a vailable
directly so as to pr eserve the full
brightness of your colours.
USEFUL HINT :
Preferably use colour ed pa per. For
instance, bottle-green or b urgundy
colours will set of f the luminosity of
pastel to great advantage.
PACKAGING :
The pastel cr ayons and soft pastels ar e available separately or in sets of
assorted colours (12, 24 or 48 colours).
PASTEL COMBINED WITH WATERCOLOUR, ACRYLIC
OR OIL TECHNIQUES :
Contemporary artists have tended to abandon single techniques in favour
of the mix ed use of compatib le products. This means that a f ew r ules,
particularly the “lean to f at” rule must be f ollowed, but, with a little car e,
you should be aware that this will have no effect on the correct preservation
of your creations over time.
By using the a ppropriate supports y ou can la y a w ash with temper a,
watercolour or oil (mix ed with quick-drying petroleum only), then after it
dries, rework the wash with soft pastels or pastel cr ayons.
The compatible mixes table describes all the combinations of use f or our
products.
COMPATIBILITY OF PASTEL WITH THE OTHER PAINTING TECHNIQUES
USE :
The Soft Pastel is a cr ayon rich
in pigments offering both: powerful
colour and accurate strokes, letting
you structure your drawing with ease during the initial drawing phase.
Holding the pastel upr ight or slightl y inclined, you a pply successiv e
layers of colour b y using the cor ner to obtain the maxim um intensity
of colour or the f lat edge of the pastel to obtain mor e softness and
transparency.
In contrast to traditional pastel, soft pastel is resistant and does not snap
or crumble. Be careful never to use a soft er aser with soft pastel, it will
spoil your drawing with clumsy marks.
PACKAGING :
To protect your drawing, we recommend
that you use a suitable fixative for pastels
or a retouching varnish if you are mixing
techniques. Choose a spr ay fixative so as
to apply it in th in layers.
The “Landscape” assortments come in boxes of 12 and 24 colours.
They ar e also a vailable separ ately (8 mm diameter , 70 mm length
sticks) to enlarge or top up y our colours.
SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS :
The high pigment content of the soft pastels
will giv e y ou br ight and solid tones f
or
creating: flower beds or foliage, luminous and
intense colour f or the tonality of the sk y or
water and accur acy in the dr awing and
construction of ar chitectural f eatures and
characters.
GENERAL USE :
Whatever the type of landscape, we advise you
to mak e a br ief sk etch using either Conté à
Paris pastel cr ayons or sk etching crayons (HB
graphite lead or HB b lack lead). Next, lay the
large areas of the sky and ground, followed by
the more detailed features of the landscape, for
instance: trees, flower beds or a character, by
using black.

Make your sketch using the red-brown and umber as a primer layer before
superimposing the dark green. This procedure may appear unusual but
you must keep in mind that the green will blend in with the preparatory
layers when shaded off with the f ingers. This will give you a wide variety
of greens and a more objective appearance. Finish with the lightest areas,
for instance: ray of sunlight behind a tree or flower bed by using green
and light yellow.

STILL LIFE
PORTRAITURE
PACKAGING :
PACKAGING :
The “assorted” colour soft pastels ar e available in 12, 24 and 48 colour s.
They are also a vailable separately (8 mm diameter, 70 mm length sticks)
to enlarge or top up your colours.
The “Portrait” assortments come in bo xes of 12 and 24 colour s. They are also
available separ ately (8 mm diameter , 70 mm
length sticks) to enlar ge or top up y
our
colours.
SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS :
Without losing the accuracy of the strokes, you can obtain positive results
owing to the high pigment content of the soft
pastels: You will cr eate still lif e paintings with
vibrant tones, easily obtain the v elvety textur e
and softness of a peach, the intense r ed of a
tomato or red pepper.
SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS :
This set of bright colours lets you draw all
kinds of faces and ethnic gr oups, ranging from
the very light tones of a tr anslucent and pearllike skin to the copper tones of an American
Indian or a Laplander.
GENERAL USE :
GENERAL USE :
You should pa y extr a attention w hen sketching
the still lif e. Lay out the v arious parts of y our
composition by clearly marking the f oreground,
middle distance and backgr ound. Remember to
briefly sk etch the cast shadows of the objects,
because the changing light thr oughout the da y
will affect the lighting and the shadows. This may
interfere with the structure and understanding of
your pastel drawing.
The secret of a successful pastel portr ait lies in
superimposing successive layers of colour until
a dense and luminous la yer is obtained (the
surface of the paper is almost entirely covered).
The basic colour s ar e used to cr eate the
preparatory la yers, then the f lesh and light
shades create a face with discerning contrasts.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE :
Use burnt umber for your sketch. If the ellipses of a pitcher or a plate are
slightly hesitant, remember that you can compensate later for any
weaknesses in the sketch by shading off the colours using the fingers.
Indicate the shadow cast by the objects (very lightly) in black, the volumes:
edges of an octag onal vase and cylindr ical effects of a pitcher or a fr uit
with the red-brown colour. Next, superpose the lightest, brightest colours,
for instance: a red purple and v ermilion red for a tomato, vermilion red
and orange yellow for a peach. Next, gently shade off the colours with the
fingers. They will shade naturally and blend in with the primer layers. Finish
off by highlighting the objects using f lesh tones, Naples yellow and white.
Useful hint:
Your creations must be preserved with a suitable fixative. We recommend
that you frame your pastel dr awings under glass b y placing thin w ood
beading between the drawing and the glass to pr eserve your creation.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE :
Use the b lack pastel or b urnt umber to sk etch the portr ait, and lightly
mark t he shaded ar eas of the f ace: shadows of the neck, nose, eyebrow
arches and upper lip.
Use the purple and garnet for the entire area of the face and shade off
with the fingers. Next, add yellow ochre and orange to the li ghtest areas:
cheekbones, bridge of the nose, forehead, chin…then s hade of f. In this
intermediate phase, it is usef ul to use the b lack to lightly restructure the
drawing partly erased through shading off. Finish off with the orange lake,
the flesh tone then Naples yellow and white for the finishing touches.
Useful hint:
To avoid washing your hands each time y ou change colours for shading off,
use one finger per colour… this little detail means that you do not lose your
concentration owing to fr equent hand w ashing that r apidly becomes
tiresome.
