Caravan News
Our caravans are in full swing now. September 25th we
caravanned to the Phils and Phillies. Nineteen Pi-Rs went
to show their support as they are going through a hard
time. They have lost both their caller and cuer, but they
do have a class so hopefully they will get some new
members.
October 17th we went to the Flutterwheels in Olympia.
Marbergs, Quinnetts, Neels, and Grace and I went. We
met at Zion Lutheran Church in Auburn. Brent drove us
down in his beautiful van. It was fun to ride together and
visit on the way down and back. Steve Noseck called
and Terry and Brent were busy with five women to
dance with. They had a square dance shop upstairs so
Grace and I had fun up there. Thanks, Brent, for driving
us.
November 21st we will go to the Valley Dance center in
Sumner to dance with the Swingnuts. The caller and
cure are Don and Marie Wood. They dance mainstream
from 6pm - 8 pm and plus from 8pm to 10 pm. The
address is 1705 Willow in Sumner. Thanks for your
support.

One day in 1997, I ran a personal ad on AOL looking for someone who would like to take ballroom
dance lessons with me. Phil was one of seven who emailed me back, "You've got mail!" After meeting
them online, and some in person, I chose Phil that November. Our
first phone conversation lasted eight hours! It was love at first
voice :-)
Well, the dance lessons didn't work out, but WE did! We married
in June, eight months later, at Zion Lutheran in Kent.
Jim Knight and I worked together at Coldwell Banker. One day,
Jim invited me and Phil to square dance lessons. So, where as
ballroom dancing didn't work for us, square dancing definitely
did. Thanks for the invitation, Jim! Square dancing and the friends
we have made, have greatly enriched our lives and helped us
survive some very hard times, even now... Thank you Pi R’s!!

On Saturday December 12th the PI-R
Dance will be student level and a theme of
"Holly Jolly Dance". Andy and Kyle will have us
all enjoying the Christmas season. 6 PM for
lesson # 13 and square dance workshop at 7:30
and 8 to 10:30 dance. Prez Says . . .
November 14th will be our PI-R Dance at
Meridian Grange with Andy and Kyle. Lesson #
9 at 6 PM and 7:30 is square dance workshop
and 8 to 10:30 is the dance. Canned Food
Drive & Salute Our Veterans Dance.
The PI-R meeting in October was well
attended and it was decided to keep our Theme
dances as they are on the website. Andy was
running out of theme dances to call but it was
decided most of the themes did not require
many tips that should go along with the theme.
Yes, we are having a lesson and dance on
Saturday December 26th. No lesson on
Thursday 12-31. Dave will put a small report in
the newsletters from the new dancer handbook
every month that we give to new dancers.
Sandy Schatzer is a Halloween Nut but that
applies to many holidays for Sandy. Wish
everyone a great Christmas season and a happy
New Year. Marilyn and I are going to San Diego
later in November to attend our Grandson Mark
Ryan's graduation from the Navy Seals
program. Mark has been in the program almost
2 years and can finally call himself a Navy Seal.
We are very proud. Thursday November 19th is lesson # 10 at
Meridian Grange at 7 PM. The PI-R Squares will be having a caravan
on Saturday November 21st to the Swing Nuts
with Don Wood calling and Marie Wood cueing.
It will be at the Valley Dance Hall 1705 Willow
St., Sumner, WA 98390. Mainstream from 6 to
8 and Plus from 8 to 10. Should be a fun
evening.
Our PI-R dance on November 28th will be
a "Turkey Two-Step" and should enable you to
take off some of the turkey you had for
Thanksgiving. Andy & Kyle with round dance
workshop at 7:30 and 8 to 10:30 dance. Do not
forget lesson # 11 at 6 PM.
Our lessons have been going great and all
are held at Meridian Grange. Brett Kappenman
on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays at 7 PM and Andy
on the 2nd and 4th new dancers need all the
help they can get from our members.
Thanks, Terry & Marilyn On Thursday December 3rd we have
lesson # 12 at Meridian at 7 PM.
On Saturday December 5th we caravan to
the Wagon Wheels at Meridian Grange with
Wayne Easton calling and Lorraine Rouse
cueing. 7 PM for the workshop and 8 to 10 PM
for the dance with plus after 10. Lets give them
a big caravan as many of the Wagon Wheels are
always at our dances.

The PI-R Squares dance club was founded in
the Spring of 1950 after a series of 10 lessons
were conducted by Caller Joe Rantz at the
Empire Way Community Hall. The idea of
square dance lessons had been a Skyway
Community Club effort by Morris and Jean
Woodward and friends. The name PI-R
Squares was derived by Morris from the
formula for the area (A) of a circle which is
A=7lR2 or PI-R Squares. A membership
application for the Central Puget Sound
Council was submitted March 10, 1950.

History of the Pi-R Squares
Square dancing is the American folk dance. It
was born in the days when our country was
young, carried westward by our pioneer
forefathers and is a treasured heritage of our
American culture.
In the 1930's, Lloyd "Pappy" Shaw introduced
western square dancing to thousands of
Americans with exhibitions by his students from
the Cheyenne Mountain School in Colorado.
Since then, square dancing has become a
favorite leisure time activity for millions of
dancers around the world. It has kept pace with
many of the styles, types of music, and
technological advances of our society while
remaining wholesome, family fun.
