The President’s Desk
2009 was a historic year in our organization’s 81-year history. In April, we said
goodbye to our antiquated, cage-filled animal shelter in Santa Clara and moved
into our new Animal Community Center in Milpitas – a place of hope for homeless
animals in our community, and a gathering place for pet lovers everywhere.
Our life-enriching Center not only focuses on lasting adoptions, but provides
lifelong pet support services, classes and opportunities for bonding that are
helping to keep pets in their homes with their families. Our Center, which is a
true community resource, attracts new families, individuals, volunteers, and
corporate and community groups to help us in our work. And, with your help
and support, our one-of-a kind regional facility is quickly becoming a model
of humane animal care, community involvement and green building design for
shelters nationwide!
By supporting Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV) in 2009, you have made
it possible for us to:
• Find loving homes for 3,425 animals.
• Reunite 224 lost pets with their families.

ave nearly 900 animals through our Regional Rescue program that
were going to be euthanized due to a lack of resources or space.

oster nearly 800 kittens, cats, puppies and dogs that needed just a
little more time.

pay/neuter, vaccinate and/or microchip nearly 5,600 public furry
patients in our Medical Center.
• Serve nearly 8,000 students through our Education Department.

Humane Society Silicon Valley’s history of happy endings sets the stage for

reduce pet surrenders and ensure that every adoptable animal is found a loving,

As we reflect back on the New Beginnings Campaign for a new Animal Community
Center, there are incredible accomplishments to highlight. These accomplishments are
only made possible by generous donations from supporters like you.
Although we moved into our new Animal Community Center in March 2009, HSSV’s
$25 million building campaign continues. Our current campaign obligation is only
$4.5 million, and with your continued support, we will close that gap! Completing this
campaign will have a tangible and measurable influence on the animals in Silicon Valley
and will allow HSSV to focus solely on programs that positively impact and enrich our
community.
Already we are seeing our vision to save and enhance lives become a reality. Rescued
cats, dogs, and rabbits are flourishing in our care in their spacious, home-like habitats.
Animals’ personalities shine through in a way that was never possible when we had
to house them in cages at our old facility. Our community is much more comfortable
visiting us in a place that shouts happiness, rather than despair. We are so grateful for
your support in arriving at this point.
The result is that we are saving more lives than ever before. By engaging the
public with services never before provided by an animal welfare organization, we
strengthen the bonds between people and their pets as we move toward our ultimate
goal to eliminate pet abandonment, unnecessary euthanasia, and to increase people’s
commitment to their pets.

Build a World-Class
Animal Community Center to Save Lives
Twelve years ago, we set out to change
the way homeless animals are sheltered
and viewed by our community. With your
incredible support, our vision became a
reality in April 2009, when we opened the
nation’s first Animal Community Center in
Milpitas.
For abandoned or neglected animals,
successful placement in a loving home is a
new beginning; with our Animal Community
Center, we are reinventing animal welfare in
two key ways:
1. We have built an environmentallyfriendly, inviting Center that showcases our
animal guests in a way that allows potential
adopters to envision the animals in their
homes and incorporates a community
center component that increases foot traffic
and encourages community involvement in
a way no animal welfare agency has ever
accomplished.
2. We are providing programs and
services that offer ongoing support for
people and their pets, to promote the
human-animal bond, and to help stem the
tide of relinquished pets, and eliminate
unnecessary euthanasia.
HSSV support services include our
Whole Pets Store; our Medical Center,
which specializes in affordable spay/neuter
surgery, vaccinations and microchips;
doggie day-care, boarding and grooming;
our community dog park and training
center; and our Education Center where
students of all ages not only learn how to
treat animals with kindness and respect,
but how to become better citizens.
Whether people attend our Summer Music
& Wine Festival, hold their 50th wedding
anniversary party in our Community
Room, or rent our entire facility to host
their corporate event, we are creating new
opportunities for our animal guests to find
loving homes by bringing people to us.
With our Center, people and pets all
over the Bay Area are joining us in saying
goodbye to the outdated stereotype of
an animal shelter as a place of despair.
Instead, we are saying “welcome!” to a
new era of hope and second chances for
homeless animals.

Saving and Enhancing Lives
Facilitate Special Needs Adoptions
Matt was a 12-year-old stray found living
on the streets. When he arrived at our
Center, he had an infection in his mouth
that made swallowing painful, had rotten
teeth, was malnourished and his fur was
so matted it had to be shaved down to
the skin. Most other shelters would have
euthanized Matt due to his older age and
health problems. Our Animal Care and
Medical Teams lovingly cared for Matt
for several weeks while he regained his
strength and was treated for his infection.
Our veterinarians pulled nearly all of his
rotten teeth in an effort to improve his
condition. Even though Matt was bald and
toothless, he was not without spirit. In
time, Matt’s hair grew back and several
months later, he was adopted into a loving
home where he enjoys the companionship
of humans, cats and dogs.

the Homeward Bound
Scholarship Program,
which helps place
longer-term animal
guests into their forever
homes by sponsoring
their adoption fee.
Golden Pet:
HSSV’s Golden Pet
program focuses on
finding loving homes
for older animals
(those that have
more extensive life
experiences).

lots of love until we find
them the perfect home.
Saving and Enhancing Lives
Reduce Euthanasia in Our Community
HSSV’s
Regional
Rescue team discovered Preston, a 1 ½
year-old terrier mix
during one of their
weekly rescue runs
to a nearby shelter.
They
had
already
loaded the animals
they would be bringing back to HSSV
when Preston ran up
to one of our employees and looked at her
with pleading eyes as
if to say: “Take me
away from here”.
When they inquired
about the little fellow, they discovered
that he was scheduled to be euthanized,
and had just escaped
from the euthanasia
room! They were told
Preston had shown
signs of aggression
toward people and
that the shelter staff
did not have the time
to rehabilitate him.
HSSV’s Regional Rescue Team knew they
had to give Preston
another chance.
Once at HSSV, Preston was behaviorally
and medically evaluated for adoption. Preston did indeed have some fear-based behaviors, but nothing that our team felt he
couldn’t overcome in a foster home with lots
of love, training and support. Preston was
soon placed in the ideal foster home with
HSSV volunteer Jane Norris who worked diligently with Preston to help him overcome
his issues.
It took two months to find the right family
for Preston, but as soon as Cindy called, it
was obvious that Preston had found his new
home. Cindy had moved to Grass Valley,
and was having a hard time finding a small,
active dog that would fit in with her family.
When Cindy heard how smart and active
Preston was, she and her two daughters
came to meet him.
When the family drove down to meet
Preston on Mother's Day, it was love at first
sight! Preston took to them immediately,
and they all fell in love with him.
Preston now participates in all of the

and found him a loving home
girl's home-schooling and has become quite
adept at arts and crafts! Of course, he is
still studying how to be a good canine citizen
and has become quite a star at agility.
As is often the case when families adopt,
Preston has helped his adoptive family
as much as they have helped him. Their
oldest daughter has a rare seizure disorder
that precludes her from participating in
outdoor sports and makes it difficult for
her to meet people her own age. However,
since Preston's agility and training lessons
take place indoors, she has been able to
participate with him. Their success together
as a team has improved her self-esteem
and given her a springboard to meet new
friends.
Some might call it chance; but we believe
HSSV’s role is to be there for animals like
Preston who need a second opportunity to
show their true selves. And the family that
believed they were “saving a dog’s life” by
adopting from HSSV learned that saving
lives is a two-way street.

Saving and Enhancing Lives
Provide Critical Expertise and Support to
Individuals in Their Time of Need
Six-month-old Jeffy was surrendered
to HSSV when his family was unable to pay
for his vet care after his eye was injured.
Our Medical Team examined Jeffy’s eye
and determined that it was too damaged to
repair and would need to be removed. Jeffy
was attentively cared for by our staff and
volunteers as he convalesced. As each day
passed, this once shy little pup grew into a
sweet, trusting canine.
Several weeks later, Jeffy was adopted by
Karla who says she felt an instant connection
with him the moment she saw him. Today,
Jeffy is doing great in his new home and
is attending dog training classes with Karla
who says missing an eye hasn't slowed him
down one bit!
Faith, an adorable gray tabby kitten
was just two months old when she was
brought to our center
as a stray. During her
medical examination, our
veterinarians noticed Faith
had a distended abdomen
and was lethargic. It
turned out that Faith
suffered from congenital
hypothyroidism (a rare
condition in cats) and had
fluid in her chest. She was
taken to Adobe Animal
Hospital in Los Altos
for overnight intensive
care due to her serious
condition. A veterinary
technician working that
night saw Faith and fell
in love with her small
cuddly body and strong
will to live. The next
day, Faith was brought
back to HSSV where our
medical staff stabilized
her hypothyroidism and
cleared up her chest
infection. Each day, Faith
got a little stronger and the
vet tech who had admired
Faith adopted her several
weeks later. The two have
become inseparable and
Faith accompanies her
human companion to work
every day where she has
become a staff favorite at
Adobe.
Pet
S upport
Services
Behavior Counseling:
HSSV operates a
behavior help line to
help keep people and
pets together. Last
year, our behavior team
answered hundreds
of phone calls and
emails from concerned
pet owners who had
behavior questions.

Building Community
Create a Life-Enriching Destination for
Animal Lovers
Whole Pets Store
At HSSV, we want to make sure all of
our pet adopters start off on the right
paw with their new family members.
That’s why we opened our Whole Pets
Store in our Animal Community Center.
The store offers a variety of nutritional
foods, supplements, bedding, leashes and
toys to keep pets healthy and happy. Our
trained staff and volunteers are a wealth
of information for first-time pet owners
and returning customers can take pride
knowing that proceeds from the store
help support our mission to save and
enhance lives.
Pet Pantry Donation
Program
HSSV's Pet Pantry Program provides pet
food to pet owners who have can no longer
afford to feed their pets. Rather than
have someone surrender their dog or cat
because they can't afford to buy pet food,
HSSV distributes food to these needy pet
owners so they can keep their beloved
pets in their homes. Food donations are
welcome and can be dropped off at our
center.
Community Dog Parks
Our Community Dog Parks are a great
way for people to socialize and exercise
their canine companions. We offer two
parks: one for large dogs and one for
small dogs. The parks are membershipbased to create a safe, social and fun play
environment for dogs and their people.
To help achieve this goal, all dogs are
evaluated for friendly, social behavior

Dog Park members are invited to
participate in social events at our dog
parks and have exclusive access to
workshops that help them teach their
dogs essential “park manners.” They also
receive discounts at our Whole Pets Store
and our Medical Center.
Our goal is to deepen the human-animal
bond by providing a safe and playful
environment for dogs and their people.
The dog park creates the opportunity for
us to support our community’s needs and
to build personal relationships with our
members and their companions that will

Create Education Programs That Help Kids
Foster a Lifelong Commitment to Animals
HSSV’s Education Department offers a
variety of programs for children and teens
that are highly interactive, student-centered and age-appropriate. With your generous donations, we have created nationally
recognized, leading-edge programs that do
more than just teach students how to understand,
respect and treat animals
— they teach them how
to become better citizens
in their communities.
On any given day, a
Girl Scout Troop may
be taking a tour of our
facility, or members of
HSSV’s Animal Pals Club
may be working on an
animal-related
project
for our shelter animals.
Teens in our Compassion
In Action program may
be dropping off towels and toys from a
donation drive they held at their high school
to benefit homeless animals. In the summer,
visitors can’t help but notice our Amazing
Animals Summer Campers in bright orange
T-shirts doing everything from creating
colorful artwork of our shelter animals to
making cat toys or spending time with our
adoptable animals. High School students
enrolled in our Youth Advisory Board (YAB)
develop youth-centric programs at HSSV,
which help them develop leadership skills

Since August 2007, 93% of all teens
felt a greater sense of responsibility and
compassion for animals after participating

More than 600 volunteers play a vital
role in HSSV’s success as an organization.
On any given day, volunteers perform
countless acts of service at our Animal
Community Center, taking on jobs as
kennel and hospital assistants; cat, dog, or
rabbit socializers; docents; pet store clerks;
foster parents; special events coordinators;
adoption counselors; and community
outreach ambassadors, and educators.
In addition to working with individual
volunteers, HSSV's corporate volunteer
program provides Silicon Valley employees
with a team-building experience that
makes a difference in the lives of homeless
animals. During a corporate volunteer day,
employees receive a tour of our Animal
Community Center, participate in an
animal experience with our
shelter guests and roll up
