Key Stage 2 – Year 5

Key Stage 2 – Year 5
SPRING Term
TO INFINITY AND BEYOND
Historical, Geographical and Social Understanding
Autumn and Summer term topics.
Religious Education: The topic titles this term
are Mission, Memorial Sacrifice and Sacrifice.
EPR (PSED, SEAL, PSHE, Citizenship)
Our topics for this term are Going for Goals,
Relationships and Environment.
Understanding English, Communication and Languages
Text level work will focus on the features of the following; choral and performance poetry,
recounts (news reports) and a focus on the award-winning novel (The Blue Planet) by Andri
Magnason. We will also look at a range of short stories by a range of authors. We will focus on
the use of punctuation in longer and more complex sentences such as comma and semi-colon.
Main writing outcomes will be for pupils to write a news report and perform their own poem. They
will write a short story in the style of the Blue Planet. MFL: With a specialist French teacher
children will be learning conversational French and some basic written sentence structures and
vocabulary.
Maths understanding this term includes fraction, decimals and percentages.
Enhancement / Home learning:
The topic will kick start with WASA
day where children will arrive as
astronauts with their spaceship
control panels and spend the day
learning about all aspects of space.
Alternate Maths and English
homework set on Fridays to be
handed in on the following
Wednesday.
Weekly learning of times tables in
preparation for regular tests. Daily
practising of weekly spellings in
preparation for a weekly test.
Regular reading to an adult,
preferably daily. Children should talk
about their reading and be able to
find parts of the text to help them
explain their understanding.
Specifically, learning objective include: Compare and order fractions whose denominators are all multiples
of the same number, Identify, name and write equivalent fractions of a given fraction, represented visually,
including tenths and hundredths, Recognise mixed numbers and improper fractions and convert from one
form to the other and write mathematical statements > 1 E.g. 2/5 + 4/5 = 6/5 =1 1/5, Add and subtract
fractions with the same denominator and denominators that are multiples of the same number. Extend to
calculations that exceed 1, Multiply proper fractions and mixed numbers by whole numbers, supported by
materials and diagrams, Read and write decimal numbers as fractions, Recognise and use thousandths and
relate them to tenths, hundredths and decimal equivalents, Round decimals with two decimal places to the
nearest whole number and to one decimal place, Read, write, order and compare numbers up to three
decimal places, Solve problems involving numbers up to three decimal places, Add and subtract decimals,
including a mix of whole numbers and decimals, decimals with different numbers of decimal places and
complements of 1, Recognise the % symbol, understand it relates to ‘number of parts per hundred, ’Write
percentages as a fraction with denominator 100 and as a decimal, Find fractions of quantities and numbers
Make connections between percentages, decimals and fractions and relate this to finding ‘fractions of’ E.g.
1% is 1/100, 50% is 50/100, 100% = 1,Solve problems which require knowing percentage and decimal
equivalents of ½ , ¼ , 1/5, 2/5 and 4/5 and those fractions with a denominator of a multiple of 10 or 25,
Count forwards and backwards in fractions and decimals including bridging zero, Solve problems involving
proportions of quantities (e.g. decrease quantities in a recipe designed to feed six people)
Scientific and Technological Understanding
We will be blasting off on a mission to explore the universe and the far flung corners of the
galaxy. The children will discover fascinating facts about the Sun, Moon & Earth. They will
develop an understanding of day & night, the four seasons & the Moon’s phases. The Sun & the
planets making up our Solar System will be investigated, along with the other stars in their
constellations. The children will learn that forces are everywhere. They will investigate different
forces: gravity, air resistance, water resistance & friction. They will develop an understanding of
balanced & unbalanced forces & their effects. Investigate how mechanisms, like levers, pulleys
& gears, help us to use smaller forces. Design Technology will be linked to our work on forces;
we will focus on gears and pulleys.
Understanding the Arts
The topic this term is textiles following on from mixed media investigations into how the planets
can be represented e.g. charcoal and inks. We will develop a design for a textile using a range of
sewing skills on the theme of the planets/space.
Understanding Physical Development, Health and Well Being
Outside PE will include competitive games such as football and netball. The indoor PE focus is
Dance. Swimming will take place over one half of the term.
