Data Bank
 Protons are positively charged particles in the nucleus. The number of protons in the nucleus
determines the atomic number of an element.
 Neutrons are neutral particles located in the nucleus. The total number of protons and
neutrons in an atom provides the mass number of the atom.
 Electrons are negatively charged particles located outside the nucleus in the electron cloud. A
neutral atom has equal numbers of protons and electrons.
