Introduction
Microsoft Word has lots of different built-in templates for creating a CV or Curriculum
Vitae (which it calls a Resume).
Using a Built-in Template
A template is simply a pre-defined layout for a document. All documents use at least one template - the
default is called Normal.dotm. To create a CV:
1. Click on the [File] tab in the top left and choose New
The screen will show you some basic templates. If one of them is named Resume then:
2. Click on the Resume sheet
3. At the next window, click on the [Create] button
The example resume template will be downloaded to a new document with suggested text which you
can replace. Try using the template, putting in your own details - for a (bracketed) field, click on it and
type your information; otherwise, select the existing words and replace them with your own.

If the above example is rather too simplistic or you want more of a choice then carry out the following
steps:
4. Repeat step 1, i.e. click on the [File] tab in the top left and choose New
5. In the search box at the top of the screen, type in resume and then press <Enter>
A lot more resume choices should have appeared. To continue:
6. Click on the resume that you want to use
7. At the next window, click on the [Create] button
The example resume template will be downloaded to a new document with suggested text which you
can replace. Note that the majority of templates will have United States settings, e.g. for any address
and the proofing tools language.
Try using the template, putting in your own details - for a (bracketed) field, click on it and type your
information; otherwise, select the existing words and replace them with your own. Add extra headings
and modify any styles (font, font size etc.) if you want.
8. [Close] the file - [Save] it only if you would like to keep it
