She has been following politics ever since she was a young girl and saw Sen. Barry Goldwater accept the Republican nomination for President. Even at that tender age, in her heart she knew he was RIGHT. William F. Buckley also helped forge her interest in politics. She was watching TV when Buckley and Gore Vidal had it out on live television. Shortly after that exchange she read God and Man at Yale, and subscribed to National Review. Her husband, Ralph, who in his early life was a southern Democrat, told friends that Susan was so right she never turned left. Then Ralph discovered Ronald Reagan and a new day dawned in the Shepard household. After spending nearly 33 years in a variety of government jobs including working on the Capitol Hill and in the Bush White House, Susan retired from her Senior Executive Service position with the Forest Service, USDA. While working for the Forest Service she developed an interest in environmental policy and issues. Over the years she has worked to protect the spotted owl in the Pacific Northwest, grizzly bears, roadless and wilderness areas in just about all 50 states. As much as she enjoyed working in Federal service she always knew she has hampered in her political interest by the Hatch Act. Susan with US 8th District Candidate Mark Elmore at the Old So after years of watching various political campaigns she retired in time to Town Market become active in the current Presidential campaign. “I think this campaign is the most exciting I’ve ever seen in my lifetime. I can’t imagine sitting on the sidelines for this one.” Susan and her “born-again” Republican husband live in Alexandria. Her hobbies are reading and writing murder mysteries, yoga, going to estate sales and auctions and traveling. CRWC c/o 308 Monticello Blvd Alexandria, VA 22305
