KEYNOTE – DR ALAN PEARCE
10.00AM – 11.00AM
Alan’s engaging session has something for everyone as Alan shares his wealth of knowledge for improving and redesigning the brain. Insight
into how our brains can change across the lifespan offers AUSTSWIM teachers and WETS aqua instructors a unique opportunity to expand
their knowledge and apply this science in the pool to improve skills and health outcomes for clients. Topics for discussion include, the value of
practising skills, activities and drills that are rewarding, releasing brain chemicals and increasing brain excitability levels that gives rise to a sense of
achievement to optimise learning and re-learning irrespective of the age.
SESSION ONE
MY BODY HAS 2 BRAINS
MARIA BURN
Hi, I’m Sam. I have cerebral palsy.
Water is the best environment for
me. Come find out why.
Join Maria and Sam on this
journey. Watch as Sam explains
in her own words how the aquatic
environment impacts her life
and independence enabling her
to undertake many daily land
activities most of us take for
granted.
Hear how AUSTSWIM Teachers
can assist those over-used and
often painful muscles, joints
and ligaments. Gain knowledge
of water emersion decreasing
spasticity; see for yourself Sam’s
varied motor function. Watch
and learn how buoyancy makes
aerobic and anaerobic exercises
safer and more effective.
11.10AM – 12.00PM
OLDER ADULTS
JENNIFER SCHEMBRI-PORTELLI
& DR ALAN PEARCE
I’m old and getting older every
day; my joints ache, my hair is
fading, I’m losing muscle tone and
my memory is fading….. BUT wait,
there’s life left in me yet! My brain
still works and it can improve, my
body still moves so let’s work with
that and see what we can change.
Inspiration abounds in this session
that will have you re-thinking
the ageing process – no longer a
negative but a life stage that’s full
of discovery and challenge
AQUASUMMIT
DIVING & TURNS
KIRSTEN KRUSE
The world of dives and turns
moves AUSTSWIM teachers
beyond simple horizontal and
vertical body positions to explore
rotation, tilt, extend and tumble.
Foundation knowledge and skills
are important for safe, efficient and
effective diving and turns.
This session presents sequenced
activities, skills and drills to
allow your students to explore
knowledge, skill and understanding
of learning dives and turns.
Are you ready to give it a try; you’ll
be very inspired by what you learn
and experience as Alan and JSP
take you on a unique journey.
Water - the best environment for
improving physical functionality
and promoting movement, exercise
and independence.
LUNCH
Freestyle, a complex stroke that
incorporates the whole body. I
have to remember to kick my
legs, rotate my arms and then
pull-push them, remember to stay
streamlined and oh, don’t forget
to breathe in and out! So much to
remember and put together.
Successful freestyle starts with
understanding the ‘building
blocks’ and having great teaching
techniques to impart to your
students.
Join Leigh as he pulls freestyle
apart, then puts it back to together
with some great teaching tips.
Globally, obesity is affecting
an increasing proportion of
children. Physical activity
plays an important role in the
prevention of becoming overweight
and obese in childhood and
adolescence. In Australia, a large
proportion of children do not meet
recommended physical activity
guidelines. Gain knowledge
about activities to include into
kids aqua classes or fun water
days to encourage children to
enjoy physical activity. Regular
physical activity at a ‘huff and
puff’ intensity level will improve
strength, aerobic capacity,
balance, flexibility and anaerobic
capacity. Children physical activity
is also a unique business selling
point for the aquatic program and
may just improve your bottom
line and the kids waistline! Let’s
take responsibility for our future
generation and impart knowledge,
skill and understanding about the
benefits of aquatic activity for kids.
12.00PM – 12.40PM
SESSION TWO
FABULOUS FREESTYLE
LEIGH FLAVELLE
DOING IT FOR THE KIDS
ANNETTE CHATTERTON
12.40PM – 1.30PM
PACKING A WATER SAFETY
PUNCH! – INNOVATIVE SCHOOLS
PROGRAMMING
KATE SIMPSON & JULIA WOOD
Schools programming equals
complaints, repetition and
boredom!
Not in this case.
An innovation revolution has
been taking place turning
school programs into enjoyable,
engaging sessions with increased
participation and meaningful,
lasting learning outcomes.
Impossible you say; join Kate and
Julia as they divulge the ‘in’s and
out’s’ of this knowledge, skills
and understanding based pilot
programme.
WATER SAFETY WARRIORS
NEESHA BATESON
Personal safety and survival; it’s
the essence and purpose of an
AUSTSWIM Teacher’s role and
function.
But how do we impart this to our
students?
Join Neesha in the pool to
enhance your knowledge and
understanding of water safety
essentials from foundations to
extensions.
There’s sure to be some
progressions to help build essential
survival strokes and water safety
skills for your students.
AQUASUMMIT

from Acqua Pole have for you.
Just move your body and follow
Acqua Pole’s lead to get
energised. You are guaranteed to
have a blast! It’s new, it’s a
workout and it’s fun.

PANEL – FACING CHALLENGE
FACILITATOR
KATHERINE THOM – AUSTSWIM – VICTORIAN STATE ADVISORY
COMMITTEE CHAIRPERSON
PANELLISTS:
KELLIE ELLINGWORTH – City of Maroondah
MARIA BURN – AUSTSWIM Presenter
ROSLYN LAURIE – 2015 Recipient of Teacher of Aquatics, Access and
Inclusion AUSTSWIM Award
Join this panel of aquatic professionals as they probe and explore issues
and implications of ‘disclosed’ and ‘undisclosed’ diversity. It’s really true
we are all different and that’s what makes us interesting; but sometimes
it’s a challenge too; especially when we add water into the equation. How
do we as AUSTSWIM Teachers, program leaders and managers prepare
for the unexpected and the unknown? Share in a session that offers up
suggestions for exploring, analysing, modifying and adjusting to the
challenges of teaching swimming and water safety.
AQUASUMMIT
IT’S DEEP & MEANINGFUL
STACEY ALDOUS
Participate in a deep water aqua class that includes choreographed
routines and skills and drills. Besides not touching the bottom of the pool,
what’s the difference for the participant and / or the instructor?
There are so many moves that are and are not appropriate for the deep
environment. Do you know the difference? Learn how to demonstrate
suspended moves on pool deck and gain a better understanding of the
moves that work!
Come along and try it.
AFTERNOON TEA
2.30PM – 2.45PM
SESSION FOUR
2.50PM – 3.40PM
THINK OUTSIDE THE SQUARE
JULIA WOOD
Ho-hum, same kids, same lessons,
same place, same time every
week; it’s oh so boring!
Have we got some surprises
for you! Be challenged and
invigorated; perhaps even excited
as Julia opens her bag of wonder
and intrigue to flood your classes
with magic, fun and laughter.
Find new ways with old equipment,
discover how to use trousers as
a survival tool and hear a starfish
talk. Do you know about glue and
elephants? Then whether you’re
just starting out or been teaching
for years there’s something here
for every AUSTSWIM Teacher and
their students.
CIRCUITS, CIRCUITS
EVERYWHERE INFANT & PRESCHOOL
LYN O’BRIEN
Stimulate interest, cater for
different learning styles; keep
everyone active and engaged.
Yes it’s all possible with circuit
teaching.
Lyn offers practical solutions and
options to add spark to infant and
preschool lessons and beyond;
then invites you to discuss, explore
and expand the endless world of
options that circuit teaching has
to offer.
The building blocks have been
explored; we’ve gained knowledge
and understanding of this complex
stroke.
So now let’s join Leigh in the pool
to put our learning into action as
we explore the skills aspect of
freestyle.
SESSION FIVE
WHAT PARENTS WANT
AND STUDENTS NEED –
INFANT & PRESCHOOL
LEONIE NEWTON
Leonie takes us on a journey
beyond the confines of water space,
expanding, exploring and observing
as we consider each parent-child
partnership.
Our thought processes are nudged
as we look at what’s happening
beyond the pool and utilise the
observations within each lesson.
Simple considerations can change
an expected difficulty into being
the best “thing” that happens in a
student’s day. You might be surprised
with the outcomes.

activation when performing each
dumbbell exercise. Consideration
and modification for specific
population groups using dumbbells
is addressed and highlighted.
Whether it’s new aqua class ideas,
adult activities or squad training
with a difference, you’ll be sure
to leave this session stronger and
more motivated to use the humble
dumbbell. Come to the session
ready to experience a full body
water workout.
3.50PM – 4.40PM

inclusion students in your
classes but you’re not quite
sure what to do?
