Topics for discussion include, the value of practising skills, activities and drills that are rewarding, releasing brain chemicals and increasing brain excitability levels that gives rise to a sense of achievement to optimise learning and re-learning irrespective of the age. SESSION ONE MY BODY HAS 2 BRAINS MARIA BURN Hi, I’m Sam. I have cerebral palsy. Water is the best environment for me. Come find out why. Join Maria and Sam on this journey. Watch as Sam explains in her own words how the aquatic environment impacts her life and independence enabling her to undertake many daily land activities most of us take for granted. Hear how AUSTSWIM Teachers can assist those over-used and often painful muscles, joints and ligaments. Gain knowledge of water emersion decreasing spasticity; see for yourself Sam’s varied motor function. Watch and learn how buoyancy makes aerobic and anaerobic exercises safer and more effective. 11.10AM – 12.00PM OLDER ADULTS JENNIFER SCHEMBRI-PORTELLI & DR ALAN PEARCE I’m old and getting older every day; my joints ache, my hair is fading, I’m losing muscle tone and my memory is fading….. BUT wait, there’s life left in me yet! My brain still works and it can improve, my body still moves so let’s work with that and see what we can change. Inspiration abounds in this session that will have you re-thinking the ageing process – no longer a negative but a life stage that’s full of discovery and challenge AQUASUMMIT DIVING & TURNS KIRSTEN KRUSE The world of dives and turns moves AUSTSWIM teachers beyond simple horizontal and vertical body positions to explore rotation, tilt, extend and tumble. This session presents sequenced activities, skills and drills to allow your students to explore knowledge, skill and understanding of learning dives and turns. Are you ready to give it a try; you’ll be very inspired by what you learn and experience as Alan and JSP take you on a unique journey. Water - the best environment for improving physical functionality and promoting movement, exercise and independence. LUNCH Freestyle, a complex stroke that incorporates the whole body. I have to remember to kick my legs, rotate my arms and then pull-push them, remember to stay streamlined and oh, don’t forget to breathe in and out! So much to remember and put together. Successful freestyle starts with understanding the ‘building blocks’ and having great teaching techniques to impart to your students. Join Leigh as he pulls freestyle apart, then puts it back to together with some great teaching tips. Globally, obesity is affecting an increasing proportion of children. Physical activity plays an important role in the prevention of becoming overweight and obese in childhood and adolescence. In Australia, a large proportion of children do not meet recommended physical activity guidelines. Gain knowledge about activities to include into kids aqua classes or fun water days to encourage children to enjoy physical activity. Regular physical activity at a ‘huff and puff’ intensity level will improve strength, aerobic capacity, balance, flexibility and anaerobic capacity. Children physical activity is also a unique business selling point for the aquatic program and may just improve your bottom line and the kids waistline! Let’s take responsibility for our future generation and impart knowledge, skill and understanding about the benefits of aquatic activity for kids. 12.00PM – 12.40PM SESSION TWO FABULOUS FREESTYLE LEIGH FLAVELLE DOING IT FOR THE KIDS ANNETTE CHATTERTON 12.40PM – 1.30PM PACKING A WATER SAFETY PUNCH! – INNOVATIVE SCHOOLS PROGRAMMING KATE SIMPSON & JULIA WOOD Schools programming equals complaints, repetition and boredom!
