MLK REMEMBRANCE DAY TUESDAY APRIL 25 I N C O M M E M O R AT I O N O F D R . K I N G ’ S 1 9 6 5 U C L A V I S I T WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE? On April 28, 2015, the UCLA community came together to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s 1965 visit, thereby designating the fourth Tuesday of April each year as MLK Remembrance MLK Day at UCLA. MLK Remembrance Day was established utilizing the legacy of Dr. King and UCLA to examine current and historical events and effect positive change. MLK Remembrance Day 2017 asks, “where do we go from here?” and Offers film, workshops, and panels to help us understand how to use MLK’s legacy to navigate our times. J O I N U S I N A N E W C A M P U S T R A D I T I O N — O N E W E M AY N E E D N O W M O R E T H A N E V E R M L K R E M E M B R A N C E D A Y This year’s events include a film series featuring Academy Award-winning and other important films that speak to MLK, a rebroadcast in Meyerhoff Park of “The Other America,” a MLK speech especially relevant today, along with workshops and panels that use MLK as a lens to examine relevant issues and topics. The REEL TALK Film Series, which features 24 films, is the exciting lead in to 2017 MLK Remembrance Day. REEL TALK begins Thursday, April 20 with screenings of the documentary“13th” by UCLA almuna Ava Duvernay, and concludes Monday evening with a screening of the Oscar-winning film “Moonlight.” On Sunday, April 23 REEL TALK features a retrospective of the work of Stanley Nelson. On Tuesday, April 25, MLK Remembrance Day begins with a broadcast of MLK’s “The Other America” speech in Meyerhoff Park, where the campus is invited to gather to remember and reflect on MLK’s legacy and how relevant it is today. Later, workshops on a range of topics inspired by MLK will be held at the Student Activities Center. Followed by a panel discussion in LA Tennis Center Strauss Clubhouse. MLK Remembrance Day concludes with an evening VIP reception followed by a free campus screening of Hidden Figures in Royce Hall. Interaction Stations Broadcast of MLK’s “The Other America” speech 400 elementary school students visit the campus to enjoy a variety of hands-on science, technology, recreation, engineering, art and math activities.
