2014-2015 School of Psychology Scholarship Application Follow these steps to apply for School of Psychology Merit Scholarships: 1. READ the description and criteria for each scholarship. 2. DECIDE which scholarships you are applying for. 3. PREPARE by writing essays, vita and asking for recommendations as required. 4. SUBMIT ONLINE all application materials to Student Financial Services by 5 PM Monday, March 17, 2014. Very Important Details Apply for Financial Aid—You need to have a completed 2014-2015 Fuller Financial Aid Application on file. Apply online by going to http://www.fuller.edu/Offices/SFS/Forms_and_Petitions/ U.S. citizens and permanent residents must submit a FAFSA. Please use your 2013 completed tax forms. Vita—A vita is required for all applications. Include your name and Student ID (G#) on each page of the vita. Save your vita as a Microsoft Word document or PDF file. Important! Do not combine your vita with your essays. Use your own name and the word “vita” as the file name for the file containing the vita like this: “yourname_vita.doc” or “yourname_vita.pdf”. For example: if your name was Phil McGraw, the name of your file would be “philmcgraw_vita.doc”. Essay Responses—Write a separate essay for each award that requires an essay. Using the same essay for each award is not acceptable. Be sure your essay addresses the specific criteria for that award. Include your name and Student ID (G#) on each essay page. On each essay page write the corresponding scholarship name. Combine all of your essays into one Microsoft Word document or PDF file. Letters of Recommendation or Support Give a completed Scholarship Recommendation Form (see page 3 of this packet) and the descriptions of each scholarship that you are applying for to each person you are asking for a recommendation or letter of support. Be sure to include your name, student ID, sign the waiver, and list the awards you are applying for on each form. Scholarships that require a faculty recommendation: Ask for ONE recommendation from a faculty member. You do not need a separate recommendation for each scholarship. Scholarships that require letters of support: Ask for ONE letter of support from a pastor or other professional as stated in the award criteria. You do not need a separate recommendation for each scholarship. All letters should be sent in sealed envelopes directly to the Student Financial Services Office. It is your responsibility to verify with your recommender that recommendations have been submitted by the deadline. Due to volume, the Student Financial Services is unable confirm the receipt of any recommendation or letter of support. Very Important Details Continued Submitting Your Application—You will submit your application and any required essays and vita ONLINE to the Student Financial Services Office. Go to the 2014-2015 Scholarship Applications at http://www.fuller.edu/Offices/SFS/Forms_and_Petitions/ Click on the SOP Returning Student Scholarship Application link. Complete the online form and select the scholarships you are applying for. Upload your properly named essay file (see Essays on the first page) as necessary. Upload your properly name vita file (see Vita on the first page) as necessary. Click the Submit button. A confirmation page will appear and the same will also be sent to the email address you specified on the form. Timeline—All materials, including recommendations must be received by Student Financial Services by 5 pm Monday, March 17, 2014. Late submissions will not be considered. Award recipients will be notified by May 2, 2014. Recipients will be required to submit a brief biography and thank-you note for the donor before funds can be released. Letters of thanks will be due to the SOP dean’s office on June 13, 2014. Notes: Most recipients are selected by the recommendation of a scholarship committee made up of senior faculty and a vote of the combined faculty in consultation with the donor of the award. Students currently completing their final year of the program are welcome to apply. Any scholarship awarded will then be applied to the student’s outstanding balance upon graduation. Amadeus Award (Clinical or MFT) The Amadeus Award was established to support students in the School of Psychology who actively present Christ as the foundation for the client’s healing. Recipients of the Amadeus scholarship fund may be pursuing any degree program in the School of Psychology; have completed one or more years of study in the School of Psychology; and maintained a 3.0 grade point average. Amount for 2014-2015: $3,360 Applications should include: Using Psalm 62:5-8 as your reference point, please write a 3-4 page (maximum, double-spaced) personal reflective essay describing how you see your own and your client’s ultimate identity, worth, and healing as dependent upon and coming from God (i.e. Jesus Christ). Jack and Judy Balswick, of the Department of Marriage and Family. Headington Memorial Scholarship (Clinical) This scholarship is given to clinical psychology students in either the second or third year of the program, who have demonstrated the ability to relate the Christian faith and psychological principles to the emotional problems of individuals and families. Amount for 2014-2015: $4,745 Application should include: One or two sentences that document your integration competencies (this might include listing appropriate courses taken and grades earned). A case study of up to 250 words on how you have applied psychological principles and Christian faith to individual or family problems. A recommendation letter from a professor or clinical supervisor. Del and Joyce Goehner Scholarship (Clinical) This scholarship is for one clinical psychology student in remembrance of Del Goehner, a clinical psychology student who passed away due to medical complications in the early years of the establishment of the School of Psychology. Recipients of the Del and Joyce Goehner Scholarship must hold a 3.5 GPA or above. Edith Munger Scholarship (Clinical) This scholarship will be given to a female student pursuing her Ph.D. in clinical psychology as preparation for a second career. The student must be matriculating in their second through sixth year of the Clinical Psychology program at Fuller Theological Seminary, School of Psychology. The award will be for one year. Recipients are invited to re-apply for the award in subsequent years, though preference will not necessarily be given to their applications. Grace Li Jubilee Scholarship (Clinical) This scholarship recognizes an international doctoral student in the Department of Clinical Psychology from a developing country who is preparing for mental health service and ministry in developing countries. Heavenly Treasure Jubilee Scholarship (Clinical) This scholarship recognizes an international doctoral student in the Department of Clinical Psychology from a developing country who is preparing for mental health service and ministry in developing countries, with a preference for Asia. A copy of your vita. John P. Davis Jr. Memorial Award (Clinical) The John P. Davis award remembers a person who brought all dimensions of his life to his therapy. He loved his family and friends; he was a sportsman who loved to sail, ride motorcycles and play tennis; an Episcopalian Priest who continued to practice ministry; a therapist who brought openness, intelligence and a sense of the sacred to his practice. He exemplified the integration that the school cherishes. The award is given to a clinical psychology student who is deeply involved in personal growth and in the deepening of his/her spiritual life, and who recognizes that it is one’s person that is primary in being a therapist. John Stauffer Memorial Merit Fellowship (Clinical) This fellowship recognizes a clinical psychology student with demonstrated excellence in the following eight areas: High potential for professional and scientific creativity. Demonstrated leadership skills. Presentation of research papers at professional conferences. Publication of articles in psychological journals. Manifestation of a clear commitment to public service. Articulation of clear professional goals. Maintenance of an outstanding academic record. Leadership through grant proposals or designing new models for delivering human services. Amount for 2014-2015: $5,000 Application should include: One essay of 500 words or less describing examples of leadership activities in profession and community in each of the eight areas listed above. A copy of your vita. 4 Johnson/Bock Scholarship (Clinical) This scholarship recognizes a clinical psychology student with: Promise for pastoral/preaching ministry or counseling; A clearly articulated call to evangelism and commitment to Jesus Christ as Lord; Evidence of dedication and contributions to church and society through such things as work experiences, volunteer and civic activities; Academic achievement. Amount for 2014-2015: $5,000 (estimated) Application should include: An essay or 500 words or less articulating your call to ministry or counseling and describing a personal experience of God and understanding of God as derived from biblical, theological and historical sources. Tan Family Jubilee Scholarship (Clinical) This scholarship recognizes an international doctoral student in the Clinical Psychology Department from a developing country who is preparing for mental health service and ministry in a developing country. Warren and Janet Brown Scholarship (Clinical) As professor of psychology, Director of the Lee Edward Travis Research Institute, and beloved mentor to many in the School of Psychology, Dr. Warren Brown and his wife Janet have played a foundational role in the lives of many Fuller alumni. This scholarship will be given annually to a full-time Clinical PhD student studying neuropsychology in Dr. Brown's laboratory in the form of a research assistantship for one school year. Recipients must hold a 3.5 GPA or above. A copy of your vita, including current GPA. 5 SECTION FOUR – AWARDS BY NOMINATION ONLY CLINICAL Gene Wesley Pfrimmer Memorial Award (PGU Nomination) Established as a memorial by Gene Pfrimmer’s family and friends, this award is given annually to a student in the Clinical Psychology Department who actively promotes a sense of cooperation and unity among the members of the graduate union with fairness and justice. Amount for 2014-2015: $1,450 MFT Marriage and Family Department Community Award (PGU Nomination) This award recognizes a marriage and family master’s student who has, in the judgment of his or her peers, embodied the ideals of servant leadership in fostering Christian community in the student body. Amount for 2014-2015: $500 Marriage and Family Faculty Award (MFT Faculty Nomination only) This award honors a current doctoral student or a graduating master’s student in the Department of Marriage and Family, who has been accepted to doctoral study, and who, in the faculty’s judgment, demonstrates the highest levels of clinical and scholarly potential as a professional in the field of family therapy or family studies. Amount for 2014-2015: $500 6 SCHOOL OF PSYCHOLOGY School of Psychology Dean’s Awards (SOP Faculty Nomination only) These awards recognize one first year student each from the Department of Clinical Psychology and Department of Marriage and Family, who demonstrate academic competence, a strong Christian faith, and a commitment to the integration of psychology and theology. Amount for 2014-2015: $500 each ALL-SEMINARY David Allan Hubbard Achievement Award (SOP Faculty Nomination only) This award comes from an initial endowment fund created by Homer and Margaret Surbeck, who, as laypersons, are active in Christian organizations. Their gift was intended to signify their appreciation for the work of the seminary and in particular for the outstanding leadership provided by the former president, the late David Allen Hubbard. The award recognizes a graduating student whose accomplishments clearly reflect the academic, spiritual, and professional goals of his or her school, and who shows promise in his or her chosen ministry.
