Annual Roast Beef Dinner Practical Tips for Helping the Environment. Pope Francis’ encyclical on “Care for Our Common Home” is a call for global action as well as an appeal for deep personal, inner conversion. Here are some of the pope’s suggestions: √ Put an end to “mental pollution.” Think deeply, live wisely, love generously. √ End the tyranny of the screen, information overload and distractions. Watch out for media-induced melancholy and isolation. Cultivate real relationships with others. √ Get down from the ivory tower and stop the rhetoric. Get to know the poor and suffering; it will wake up a numbed conscience and inspire real action. √ Stop blaming problems on population growth. The real threat is excessive consumerism. PARISH NOTES There is no soil so barren wherein diligent tenderness cannot produce fruit. -St. Francis de Sales Our 5K has Been Cancelled Yes, it’s true! We have decided to no longer sponsor the Steeple Chase. There was much discernment that went into this decision, but the reasons include these: Most of the existing committee has been doing this race for the past 10-11 years and the membership has been dwindling. Next, these days there are so many other organizations having 5Ks, the novelty isn’t a novelty anymore, and every weekend we had constant competition. Even our own parishioners were having to pick and choose which event to support. Lastly, despite the hard work of our dedicated committee, our proceeds dropped at least $2000 from year to year. While it’s sad to see this tradition end—a grand event 11 years, it was time to put our fund raising efforts elsewhere. We’re grateful to all those very hard-working parishioners who made this annual event possible. The fund raising committee has come up with several ideas to replace the 5K race. Recently launched was the Epic Community Cards program. There will be a Chili Cook Off in October. Saint Francis de Sales was recently approved to participate in the Amazon.com Smile and the Dillon’s Community Rewards programs. There will be more information on these efforts coming in the future. Stay tuned. The congregational rosary before Mass disturbs my meditative time before Mass in church. FUTURE EVENTS FRIDAY, JULY 23 · 9:30 am Mass at Twin Oaks TUESDAY, AUGUST 2 6:00 PM · Social Committee Meeting THURSDAY, AUGUST 13 · 4:00 pm Thursday Community Meal There is power and strength in community prayer. We are social beings and like to do things together. That is why we like to root for our sport teams with other people present. But we also have a personal side. For myself, I like to go into a silent chapel with the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. There are, nonetheless, so many ways to enter into the presence of the Lord. So while both forms of prayer have great value, the norms for the celebration of the Eucharist call for a silent time of meditation before the Mass begins. This may only be for a few brief moments. This is so people will end their conversations and more fully participate in the celebration with limited distractions. Therefore, the rosary should end before Mass with adequate time for personal reflection. If this is done, then everyone has an opportunity to enter into prayer in a way that he or she wants. Whether one prays alone or with others, the important thing is that we are trying. Devotion to Mary has always been a long-standing tradition among Catholics. The rosary is one popular way for many people. FR.
