This recipe makes 25 lip tubes and at least 6 lip balm screw cases. Total
Consumable Costs are $11.85 and Total Ingredients costs are $3.08, for a grand total
of $15. (This cost does not include the labels, electricity, gas, etc.) The lip tube
filling tray holds 50 tubes, but to save money we only make 25 tubes in training. If
the ingredients are doubled then you can make 50 lip tubes and at least 12 lip balm
screw cases for a Total Consumable Costs of $18.48 and Total Ingredients cost of
$5.50, for a grand total of $24. (This cost does not include the labels, electricity, gas,
etc.)
Note: Use the towels or clean insulated gloves to handle hot bowls.
Step #1: Wash hands thoroughly.
3
Step #2: Use a spoon to add a generous amount of shea butter to the
ceramic cup. Place it in the microwave on medium heat until the all the
shea butter is melted.
Step #3: Add to microwaveable bowl the measured amounts of beeswax,
melted shea butter, castor oil and almond oil.
Step #4: Heat until all the beeswax is melted and then some (in the
microwave). Step #5 can be performed while waiting for the beeswax to
melt.
Step #5: Prepare the lip balm containers. If using the filling tray, insert
the lip balm tubes into the filling tray and place this assembly on the
tray. (The lip tube filling tray holds 50 tubes, but to save money we only
make 25 tubes in training. The empty 25 holes can be plugged with
prior-filled lip balm tubes or they can be covered with the scraper.) Make
sure there is room for the tray in the refrigerator. If not using the filling
tray, put rubber bands around the lip balm tubes or just open the lip
balm cases and place everything on the tray.
Step #6: If gloves are not on, put on disposable gloves for this step. (See
Note #1) Add measured amounts of the vitamin E oil and the essential
oils to the bowl. Then stir in with the rubber spatula.
Step #7: Pour the contents into the filling tray or use the pipette to add
the contents to each lip balm tube or case.
Step #8: Immediately place the tray with all the filled lip balm containers
into the refrigerator. After about ten minutes the lip balm will be
solidified. While waiting perform Steps #10 to #11.
Step #9: Take one of the lip cases that already has been filled with uncolored lip balm. Unscrew the cover. Use a knife to carve a symbol into
the lip balm. The symbol you carve can be a cross, a heart, an initial or
another symbol. Do not plunge the knife down to the bottom of the lip
balm case on the first pass or the lip balm will break-up. Instead carve
down to the bottom in multiple passes. Place the lip balm material that
you carve out into the microwaveable bowl to be reused. However,
whatever accidentally drops on the table, throw out.
Step #10: Place the carved lip balm cases in the freezer.
Step #11: Removed the tray with the lip tubes from the refrigerator. If
using the filling tray, use the scraper to remove the excess lip balm and
place that excess in the microwaveable bowl..
4
Step #12: Cap the lip tube containers. They can be used immediately.
Step #13: Take a toothpick and stick it about a ¼” into the colorant.
Then wipe that colorant off on the excess lip balm in the microwaveable
bowl.
Step #14: Heat until that excess lip balm is all melted. Stir in with the
rubber spatula to blend in the colorant thoroughly.
Step #15: Use the plastic pipette to transfer the colored lip balm to the
carved part of the lip cases.
Step #16: Once the lip balm is completely cooled, cap these lip balm
cases.
Step #17: If labels have been made already, add the labels to the tubes
and cases.
Other Notes:
Note #1: Why gloves are recommended for handling the essential oils:
Getting some essential oil on your skin won’t cause any problem,
especially if washed off. However, some essential can irritate the skin
when concentrated. Before substituting an essential oil, check its safe us
on-line or at a library. Try to use only one pair of gloves per group.
Vitamin E Oil should not cause any skin problems, the gloves are only
recommended for essential oils.
Note #2: Lip balms protect your lips from chapping. However, since
people often ingest part of their lip balm and since the lips have some of
the thinnest skin in the body, much of the lip balm is absorbed into the
body. Therefore, it is particularly important to use good ingredients in
lip balms. This formula only uses 6 or 7 natural and healthy ingredients.
Note #3: Making Wax Pre-Measures: If you are seriously interested in
making lotions and lip balms, it is best to purchase an inexpensive
kitchen digital scale. That way most ingredients are measured by weight.
However, since we wanted to show people how to make these products
with only items found in typical kitchens, we measure every ingredient
only by volume. We pre-weighted the beeswax in this case. However, we
have developed another method that does not require any weighting.
5
In order to do this with the waxes, they must be pre-melted and poured
to the top of medicine cups. The medicine cups we use were purchased
from James Medical at 7821 Coldwater Rd., Fort Wayne. These medicine
cups hold a total of 40.6 ml (or 1 oz. and 11 ml.). If you use different
medicine cups you may have to adjust the formula. The medicine cup
method was invented at Fulfillment in Christ.
For lip balm, melt the beeswax in a double-boiler or in a microwave. (To
microwave, place the wax in a microwave glass vessel then place that
glass vessel into a larger vessel and add water to the larger vessel.) Wet a
paper towel with a little almond oil and lightly coat the 1-ounce medicine
cups and the dinner plate with almond oil. Place the medicine cups on
the dinner plate. When the wax is melted, hold the vessels with
potholders, towels or thermal gloves. Fill the medicine cups all the way
to the top with melted wax and let cool. You can store the beeswax in the
medicine cups until ready to be used.
Note #4: To save money, wipe your hands on the towels instead of
consuming the paper towels.
Note #5: Shea Butter is obtained from the seed of the Karite Tree
common to West Africa.
Note #6: If you don’t have a microwave, everything can be performed in a
double-boiler.
