Together, let’s build a fairer, poverty-free world P.S.: The Oxfam-Québec team is there to support you! Car wash. Spring is around the corner and many people want to get their car washed. With friends, ask a gas station or restaurant if you can organize a car wash during the weekend. Explain that the money raised will go to Oxfam-Québec. If needed, I can provide you with an attestation letter for your project. Organize your activity and use YouTube and Facebook to broadcast the information. The better you explain your project; the more people will support you. Nail polish. Organize a nail polish day displaying the colours of the country you are supporting. Set up a table in the cafeteria and offer to do your friends’ nails for $2. Organize “a cell-free day” challenge. You attend a school where a lot of students are addicted to their iPhone? Organize a phone-free day for which participants receive pledges for their challenge. No text messages, no calls, no selfies… A real phone-free day! Thrift shop / used bookstore. Organize a used item (clothing or books) drive at school. Ask for a room to set up your thrift shop and open your own store. The profits collected will help support one of Oxfam-Québec’s projects. Organize an UNO contest at school during lunch time For those who like sports organize an arm wrestling contest at school Ask the principal to organize a no-uniform theme day. Organize a bazaar, garage sale: if each student brings one object that can still be used, it will be a nice collection. Bonus, you will be giving these objects a second life! Rent a cotton candy machine and sell some at school, making for a very special day. This is a wonderful idea. Unit cost for production is approximately 25¢ and you can easily sell each portion $2 or $3. You can even serve blue cotton candy to raise awareness on the water issue. ;-) Bake cookies, muffins or little cakes and ask if you can sell them at lunch time. Or sell your baked goods at parties and events, shows, parent-teacher nights, during sport meets, etc. Offer to help people you know with something in exchange for a donation (for example: offer to babysit for a neighbour in exchange for a donation, to clean up a neighbour’s yard in race. (Note: It can be any race – office chair race in the gym, race with feet tied, etc.) exchange for a donation, etc.). Organize a sports tournament or an agility contest, for example: basketball, soccer, hockey, etc. It can also be a talent show (break dance, music, etc.). Organize a movie afternoon or night. You can even sell homemade popcorn! Organize a draw. For example: fill up a large jar with marbles or candy and offer a prize to the person who best answers: “How many ____ are there in the jar?” Each person must give 25¢ or 50¢ to participate in the draw! The $1 or $2 snake. In the cafeteria at lunch time, put down a length of coloured masking tape on the floor (1m, 3m, etc.). Put a few $1 or $2 coins on the tape to show students passing by how it works. Then, encourage them to give $1 or $2 to make it to the end of the tape and reach your objective. As you get closer to finishing, people will want to help you make it there. You make bracelets? Sell them and make a difference by collecting funds for one of Oxfam-Québec’s projects. You can use recycled material to make them (e.g. can flip tops). Teacher-student competition. Who will go the fastest riding a longboard on the sidewalk? The Ethics teacher or the English teacher? Ask students to give you 25¢ or 50¢ to attend the iPod competition. Find 2 friends who have DJ skills. Set up in the cafeteria where each friend must play a song, taking turns. Participants must get the crowd moving and shouting with their costumes, choreographies and mostly the music playing on their iPod. Alternately, teams will play 30 to 60 seconds music excerpts. Let the crowd vote for the best selection of songs! Hold a karaoke session during lunch time. Don’t forget to ask teachers to participate! Who sings best? The Math teacher or the Social Studies teacher? Bingo, bingo, everybody likes BINGO! The success will surprise you. All you have to do is charge a certain amount for each bingo card (e.g. $1 or $2). Plan a wrapping day in a grocery store. Ask the store manager for permission to wrap people’s purchases during the day. The money collected in tips will go to your project. Organize a fashion show at school. Organize a benefit-show with the students’ talents / concerts / theatre pieces / shows. Challenge the school to a “$1 per student Contest”: which class will win? Seasonal sales: hot dogs in the summer, spring flowers in April ($1 per jonquil!), Christmas tree decorations during the Holidays… You have an idea? Contact me and I will help you through the steps!
