Week 6
Directions: Use the format that we discussed in class to write the following words on index cards. You
must include: the word, definition, a sentence that shows how to apply the meaning of the word (NOT
USING THE WORD IN A SENTENCE), a picture/cartoon/formula, and synonyms and antonyms for each
word. (An example is on the back.) You will have a quiz over these vocabulary words on Tuesday.

Prince Henry the Navigator: a Portuguese explorer, soldier, and prince that sponsored
explorations that led to mapping much of the coast of west-Africa, spreading Christianity,
defeating Muslims (enemies of the Portuguese at the time), and establishing new trade routes
Cartography: skill of mapmaking
The Crusades: were military expeditions sent by different Popes (leaders of the Roman
Catholic Church) to capture the Holy Land from the Muslim Turks
Cape: a piece of land that sticks out into the water beyond the rest of the shoreline (Ex: Cape of
Good Hope)
Caravan: a group of travelers or traders who travel together for safety (Ex: Camel caravans
carried trade goods over the Silk Road from Asia to the Mediterranean Sea)
Colony: a group of people who settle in a new place but keep ties to their homeland.
Caravel: a small, fast type of sailing ship used by Spanish and Portuguese explorers
Compass: an instrument used in navigation that tells the direction in which the ship is heading
Navigator: a person good at navigation whose job is to make sure ships do not get lost
Fifteenth century: the period of time from 1400-1500
