SPECIAL SCHEDULES: (April Calendar)

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
SPECIAL SCHEDULES: (April Calendar)
Monday, April 3: Faculty and staff retreat. No school
for students.
Friday, April 7: Special schedule for Challenge Day pep
rally. Dismissal at 2:47 p.m.
Friday, April 14 – Friday, April 21 - Easter holiday. No
school for students.
SENIOR FIELD TRIP: The senior field trip to the WWII
Museum on March 21 went extremely well. The seniors
enjoyed the museum and connected information they
have learned in history with their museum experience.
I informed parents in the February Principal’s
Newsletter that we would bill the FACTS account of
each senior $50 in March to cover the cost of the field
trip. We decided to wait until April in order to get an
accurate list of students who attended the trip since we
did have a few groups of seniors who did not attend
because of other school-related events. Therefore, on
April 15, the FACTS accounts of seniors who attended
the field trip will be charged $50.
MISSION AMATONGAS FUND DRIVE: Catholic High
School participates in one large fundraiser each year to
support two causes that are special to our community.
On alternating years, we raise funds for Habitat for
Humanity of Baton Rouge and Mission Amatongas.
Last school year, we had our weeklong fundraiser and
were able to secure the necessary funding for our own
Habitat build. The home was built this past fall and we
presented it to the homeowner and her family in
January. We were proud and excited to also partner
with CHS graduate Warrick Dunn’93 and his Home For
the Holidays program and watch Ms. Perkins and her
family walk into their completely furnished home. It
was a wonderful day
This school year, April 24th – 28th will be a week
dedicated to fundraising for Mission Amatongas in
Mozambique, Africa. The Brothers of the Sacred Heart
operate a school for both day students and boarders at
Mission Amatongas. Brother Chris Sweeney, a 1984
graduate of Catholic High, runs the mission and comes
back to visit CHS once a year, always full of gratitude for
what Catholic High does for the mission and to ask for
our continued help. In the past, we have donated funds
to build bunk beds for the girls’ dorm and to purchase
additional food since the persistent drought has
decimated their crops used to feed the students.
This year Brother Chris needs funds to purchase text
books for the school, something few schools in Africa
are able to supply. In addition to the funds raised
during this weeklong fundraiser, a portion of the money
contributed by students in the Lenten Rice Bowl
collection will also go to support Mission Amatongas.
Assistant principals Dr. Eldringhoff, Brian Hightower,
and Jared Cavalier made a presentation on Mission
Amatongas to the entire school following our last school
liturgy. They have all traveled to the mission and were
able to educate our students about the incredible work
being done there and the incredible need. I explained to
the students the guidelines for the fundraiser which will
take place the week after the Easter break. I have
encouraged all students to participate in this
worthwhile and important cause.
Mission Amatongas Fund Drive Guidelines:
Donate $20 and participate in relaxed dress for the
week. Students can wear:
• Jeans or dress shorts (including cargo).
• Catholic High t-shirt or regular school dress
shirt (t-shirts do not have to be tucked
in). No tank tops. Hawaiian shirts are
acceptable.
• Tennis shoes.
• Boots.
•
•
•
Ankle socks.
Non- CHS outerwear (no camouflage).
No cut-off shorts, jean shorts, jorts, or
chubbies shorts.
In addition, students who contribute the $20 do not
have to cut their hair.
Students who donate an extra $10 do not have to shave
during the week. Students who forget on Monday can
participate during the remainder of the week, but no
discounts will be given.
Since the fund drive takes place the week after the
Easter break, students have the added incentive of
being able to let their hair grow and not shave through
the break and the week after. That always seems to
encourage participation. Thank you parents for your
support of this important fund drive.
DEADLINE FOR REQUESTS FOR TUITION ASSISTANCE
[From Gerald Tullier]: Applications for tuition
assistance for the 2017-2018 school year must be
submitted by Tuesday, April 18, 2017. Note that
applications must be submitted by all persons who are
requesting tuition assistance, both those applying for
the first time and those who received tuition assistance
during the 2016-2017 school year and are re-applying
for tuition assistance for the coming school year.
Applications for assistance are to be submitted on-line
through FACTS. A link to the FACTS web page can be
found in the “Tuition Assistance” section of the CHS
web page. You will need to create a FACTS account and
log-in, and then complete the application online.
In keeping with the educational tradition of the
Brothers of the Sacred Heart, no student is refused
admission or asked to leave Catholic High School solely
because of his family’s inability to pay tuition. Tuition
assistance is available for students whose families are
unable to pay the full cost of tuition.
Any parent who does not have access to a computer or
who needs help completing the online application can
get assistance by contacting Mrs. Pinney Johnson by
phone at (225) 383-0397 ext. #104, or by e-mail at
[email protected].
TUITION [From Gerald Tullier]: Parents are asked and
expected to honor their financial obligations to Catholic
High School through the timely payment of tuition and
fees. However, should a CHS family experience a severe
financial difficulty, the parents should contact the CHS
president as soon as possible to discuss adjustments in
scheduled payments. As stated on the CHS web page,
no student will be asked to leave CHS solely on the basis
of his parent’s inability to pay full tuition.
If no alternative arrangement for payment is made and
authorized by the CHS president, when a student’s
tuition account becomes two months in arrears, the
student may be subject to suspension from classes. No
student may take semester examinations until all
financial obligations to the school have been
satisfactorily addressed as defined by the CHS
president.
2017-2018 SCHOOL CALENDAR: Attached to this
newsletter is the updated 2017-2018 school calendar.
There is one change from the calendar previously
distributed in February. Monday, April 23, 2018 is the
day set aside for our Faculty and Staff Retreat. There is
no school for students on this day.
LEADERSHIP CONVOCATION: On Monday, April 24, we
will hold our Student Leadership Convocation in the
Catholic High gym beginning at 6:30 p.m. We will
recognize leaders of our extracurricular activities, honor
band and honor choir students, students that placed at
district rally, and other academic award winners. We
will also install the newly-elected officers of the Student
Council for the 2017-2018 school year. Letters of
invitation will be mailed during the first week of April to
everyone being recognized.
SENIOR SUPPER: This year’s Senior Supper, cosponsored by the Catholic High Men’s Club, Mothers’
Club, and Alumni Association will be on Wednesday,
April 12, at 6:30 p.m. in the gym. To ensure that all
seniors can attend, the following day, Thursday, April
13, is a “no assessment day” which means that there
are no tests, quizzes, or assignments due for seniors.
The program will consist of several brief addresses to
our graduating seniors and we will also return
cumulative school records and distribute caps and
gowns at the end of the evening. Attire for the evening
is school dress for seniors and comparable clothing for
parents.
Because of limited seating, attendance at this event is
restricted to seniors and their parents. Please make
every effort to be present for this special event and sit
as a family. Please park in the Westmoreland lot and
please do not park on the streets surrounding campus.
If you cannot be with us that evening, please encourage
your son to attend.
CHS MEN’S CLUB – CALLING ALL BEAR DADS! The
CHS Men’s Club has a long tradition of service to the
Catholic High School community. Our purpose is to
support the mission and young men of CHS and
promote camaraderie among adult males who are
interested in the betterment of the school. If you are
not already a member, please consider joining the
Men's Club and supporting Catholic High School. For
more information on how to join, visit the Men’s Club
page on the Catholic High website. Men’s Club $13,000
raffle tickets now on sale! Visit the Catholic High
website to purchase your tickets (only 500 will be sold)!

UNDERCLASSMEN FINAL EXAMS: Underclassmen
exams will take place Monday, May 22, through
Thursday, May 25.
FOURTH QUARTER GRADES: Please review Catholic
High’s grading policy (see pages 45 through 47 of the
Student Handbook). If your son had a failing grade in
any subject at the end of the first semester, it is
imperative that you review this policy. Even if your son
had passing grades in all subjects for the first semester
and the third quarter, please read the entire policy, and
be aware particularly of the following stipulations:
• A first semester failing grade can be offset only by a
grade of C or higher in the second semester.
• A second semester failing grade is not offset by a
first semester average of C or higher, and requires
summer school remediation.
SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE SCHOOL YEAR:
Please take a few minutes to discuss with your son the
importance of concluding his school year successfully.
As the end of the school year gets closer, excitement
naturally occurs and it is easy for students to lose focus.
Please encourage your son to concentrate on both his
academic work and his behavior so that all of us can
experience a positive conclusion to the school year.
