Director’s Message
Welcome to the 18th annual Cantando Festival. We are hosting
Cantando festivals this year in Edmonton, Sun Peaks and Whistler
and are thrilled to have over 6000 participants from western
Canada and the northwestern USA take part in this musical
event.
The Edmonton festival is our oldest festival and the main
reason that music teachers and students keep returning is the
opportunity to perform in the amazing Winspear Centre for
Music. This hall, the home of the Edmonton Symphony, keeps
getting rave reviews from professional musicians from around
the world. I hope our young participants will return to this hall
many times to hear everything from pop to country to classical
music in this amazing acoustic. Guest artists at the festival this
year include the Calgary Wind Symphony, the River City Big
Band, the Grant MacEwan University Percussion Ensemble, the
University of Alberta Madrigal Singers and the Kokopelli Choir. The highlight of the festival will be
the Tuesday evening performance of the Finnish vocal group Rajaton.
The Sun Peaks festival is a small intimate festival in a mountain resort setting. We continue the
tradition of bringing outstanding community and university ensembles as guest artists at the
festival. Making their third appearance at this festival is the University of Manitoba wind ensemble
and the Vancouver Youth Choir appears for their second consecutive performance. These young
musicians serve in several capacities at the festival – from moving students to venue to venue to
presenting masterclasses and concerts.
The Whistler Cantando festival is host to the National Youth Band of Canada and we very much look
forward to their performances at the festival. This ensemble is chosen from amongst the best young
musicians in the country and this year are led by Jeremy Brown, a friend and Alberta colleague and
overall outstanding musician. As well, a very popular vocal group from California called M-pact will
be featured on the Saturday evening performance.
We are thrilled to offer another opportunity for school music groups next year – a Cantando music
festival in Puerto Vallarta. Several directors have bemoaned the fact that the Canadian $ doesn’t
buy them much in the USA anymore and the somewhat unstable European situation makes travel
difficult there. Cuba is also experiencing a rapid price inflation now that Americans can travel there
freely so we looked around and found an opportunity in Mexico. We are combining the same
performance opportunities with the chance to work with young Mexican musicians – not near as
fortunate as Canadians. We think this experience will be life-changing in many ways – for both the
Mexican music students and the Canadian participants in the festival.
Enjoy your Cantando experience.

VAncouver Youth Choir
The Vancouver Youth Choir is the lower mainland’s newest choir for singers aged 15-23.
Founded by Carrie Tennant, the Vancouver Youth Choir provides an opportunity for
advanced singers to pursue challenging and eclectic music in a supportive and joyful
environment. Artistry and authentic communication are the goals of this young choir, who
present music from Fleet Foxes to Gyorgy Orban. The choir began its very first season
fall of 2013, and at Christmas presented its first concert in collaboration with the VSO
School of Music Children’s Choir. This spring, VYC participated in a private workshop
with Rajaton (Finland), shared the stage in concerts with Kamiak Choirs (Seattle, WA),
Glendora High School choirs (Glendora, CA), and Rhythm N’ Roots Choir, and collaborated
with several local high school choirs in the lower mainland. In their second season, the
Vancouver Youth Choir is excited to announce that they will be an Associate Choir of
the Vancouver Chamber Choir. As an Associate Choir, VYC will perform in three concerts
with the Vancouver Chamber Choir, including, in spring of 2015, the Faure Requiem at
the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver. VYC is thrilled to be participating in the Sun Peaks
Cantando Festival.

Look after your instrument
and it will look after you
A well-maintained instrument is the foundation of a good sound.
Your students will feel the difference, whether they’re playing a trumpet that’s been
lubricated properly, or a clarinet that’s just been cleaned from the inside out. A young
musician that looks after their horn will have a horn that looks after them.
Yamaha offers a full line of professional quality maintenance and cleaning products at a
price that won’t stretch your school’s budget.
Genuine Yamaha accessories are designed to allow your
students to sound, look, and play their very best.
