Learning Community Artifacts

What is a
“Learning Community Artifact?”
 Your artifact is a record of what your
Learning Community has done
throughout the quarter.
 Artifacts provide LC students the chance
to collaborate, reflect upon their
learning and growth, and share their
progress with the UC community.
 Learning communities will share their
artifacts at the Fall and Spring Great
Beginnings Reception.
What are the requirements?
1. Genuine student reflection on growth and
development throughout the quarter
2. Records the Learning Community's activities in
and out of the LC meeting time
3. Is visually appealing by providing pictures,
creativity, organization, and a sense of the
Learning Community’s personality
1. Genuine student reflection on growth and
development throughout the quarter
• Demonstrates student reflection on overall first year
experience thus far per quotes and/or stories
• Demonstrates that PL collected student reflections on
development
• Demonstrates student growth and development in the
Learning Community Foundations threads
2. Records the Learning Community’s activities
in and out of the LC meeting time
• Contains attractive visuals that represent a wide
variety of LC activities
• Contains attractive visuals that demonstrate LC
attention to the core learning areas
• Suggests that a broad base of students have been
involved in LC and the creation of the LC artifact
3. Is visually appealing
• Contains attractive visuals that illustrate the identity
and character of the LC
• Is indicative of a creative and thoughtful approach to
the artifact project
• Suggests that ongoing attention was devoted to
artifact project development
• Has a professional appearance worthy of public display
How do I get my students to do
this?
• Be Enthusiastic! If you are excited about creating
an artifact, so will your LC!

Let your LC take ownership of the Artifact
creation
• Brainstorm artifact ideas as a group
• Delegate responsibilities to complete the activity.
• Combine the Artifact with another activity

 Week 3: Talk with LC about Artifact
Brainstorm ideas for LC Artifact
Create a rough artifact plan for the upcoming weeks
 Week 4: Create supply list for Artifact
Work with PLC to order/ obtain supplies
 Week 5: Gather student reflections
Finalize artifact plan
 Week 6-8: Create artifact with your LC
 Week 9: ARTIFACT DUE MONDAY OF WEEK 9!
 Week 10: Show of your Artifact at the Great Beginnings

ACTIVITY: EVALUATING ARTIFACTS
1. Each table will be given a past artifact to evaluate
2. As a group fill out the handout that asks the
following questions:
What is done well on this artifact?
2. What things need to be added/improved on the
artifact?

3. As a group fill out the “Artifact Rubric”
1. Give the Artifact an overall rating of Outstanding,
Acceptable, Mediocre, or Poor
4. Call over a PLC to compare your groups evaluation to
how the PLCs have evaluated the artifact
