BE INSPIRED THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY BROTHERTON LIBRARY FLOOR PLAN BROTHERTON LIBRARY The Brotherton Library holds the arts and social sciences research collections. The West Building extension contains computer facilities and a group work area as well as more silent reading places over two floors. A BRIEF HISTORY GETTING HELP The Brotherton was opened in 1936 and the circular design embodies the concept of the Library as a focus of the life of the University. If you cannot find what you are looking for, please ask at the enquiry desk. The round, domed Reading Room was deliberately modelled on that of the British Museum, but, with Yorkshire bravura, a slightly increased diameter ensured that it was larger than the southern original. Swedish marble columns decorated with light bronze detail support the dome, while the lightness of the building is enhanced by the use of light oak, inlaid with Indian laurel. Special Collections can be found on the upper floor of the round reading room, providing a dedicated reading space together with secure and environmentally-controlled storage for rare books and manuscripts. If you have a query outside of staffed hours: use the website to find out more about library services http://library.leeds.ac.uk fill in the online enquiries form http://library.leeds.ac.uk/enquiries email: [email protected] We will answer as soon as we can. Carved cartouches identified with the University, Lord Brotherton, the Arts and the Sciences, appear over doors at key points of the Reading Room. The building is grade 2 listed.
