ENVY
There is desire. Then, there is jealousy. And then, there is envy. I will use myself
to illustrate these concepts in a material way. I like Ford trucks. I desire them.
How I respond to my desires is very important. I can work hard and be patient
in saving my money so that I can get a Ford truck like I want. In the mean time, I
can be content and be happy for others who already have Ford trucks. Or, I can
become jealous of them. Instead of focusing on simply desiring a truck like
another’s, I can desire his truck. I have become jealous because I want what he
has, and I am not content in lacking it. If I do not repent of my jealousy and
rather allow it to fester, it can easily become envy. My desire motivates my
jealousy. My jealousy motivates my envy. My envy causes me to resent that
person because they have the truck I want. A number of actions can result from
my envy. I can openly show my resentment toward that person by doing a
number of different things like speaking negatively toward him. I can strive for
a bigger and better truck to “show him up.” I can steal that person’s truck. I can
secretly devise ways to make his possession less enjoyable. I could even
murder him.
Now, remove the “Ford trucks” and fill in the blank with whatever you desire.
Maybe you desire a house. Maybe you desire a particular item of clothing or
accessory. Maybe you desire beauty. Maybe you desire a person to whom you
are attracted. Maybe you desire an ability: like the ability to preach, or the
ability to teach, or the ability to give generously. Maybe you desire obedient
children. Maybe you desire more time with your family. The list can go on.
Now, let us ask ourselves these questions.
Have our desires led to jealousy? Are we
jealous of another family because their
children are obedient? Are we jealous of
another person because they have an ability
we do not? Are we jealous of another person
because they have beauty, or clothing, or

houses that we do not? Have we decided to repent of our jealousy or are we
going to allow it to develop into envy to the point that we resent others for
having what we do not.
Love does not envy. Rather, love addresses jealousy in the proper manner and
repents of it. Love breeds contentment, positive diligence, and rejoicing with
others for having something we may not have. The church in Corinth
apparently had become envious toward particular spiritual gifts, such as
speaking in other languages. And so, Paul told them to desire the best gifts
(see 1 Corinthians 12:31; 14:1; 14:39), but love does not envy (1 Corinthians
13:4). Are we keeping our desires in check? Do we love with the love that does
not envy? Let’s grow in love.
