WELCOME HOME! The Middle School STUDY TOUR TO MADRID was
clearly an amazing experience for our world travelers and their teacher Senora Morgan over SPRING
BREAK 2017!
Three very adventurous Seventh Graders were given the opportunity to travel to Spain over Spring Break with
Spanish teacher, Señora Morgan. Gabriela Caldeira, Brie De Leon, and Logan Sorensen became a part of a loving
host family and students in one of the exceptional schools in Madrid, Colegios Ramón y Cajal. They spent time in
the classrooms of their host buddies in our sister school just like our Spanish visitors do when they come for a study
tour to Corbett Prep every year. Senora Morgan reported, “Our three students represented Corbett Prep very well.
They showed great interest in every aspect of this experience in addition to making life-long friends!” Our students
were model global students and the school sang their praises! They also spent time touring Madrid and the amazing
cities of Toledo and Segovia.
Student responses that support their parents’ investment in global understanding and experiences.
1. “This trip is so eye-opening. I got to experience how another culture interacts, The culture isn’t as different
as it seems. We can all be alike at times”. ~ Gabriela Caldeira
2. “Spain allowed me to see a different culture and experience new kinds of foods. I got to see amazing things
in Spain and made great memories. I enjoyed going to Toledo and seeing a great new cathedral that was
absolutely breath-taking”. ~ Brie De Leon
3. “It was fun to see what it is like to live in a different culture. It was very interesting to experience the culture
because some things, even as simple as greeting someone, can be so different from what I expected it to be”.
~ Logan Sorensen
FEELING LIKE A STAR for AN EARLY START IN BOOSTING CONFIDENCE
AND SELF ESTEEM: Thursday, March 30, 2017 at 9:00 AM, all Pre-K4 Beach Buddies and
Kindergarten Frogs performed their drama play called "Playhouse Corbett Prep." The students were all well
prepared with their lines and adorable smiling faces for this debut stage performance which also highlighted their
most recent International Baccalaureate unit of study, How the World Works: Discovery. The Pre-K4 and
Kindergarten teachers joined Mr. Travaglino in being so proud of the student effort, hard work, and preparation to
produce such an amazing show! Thank you to all the parents who came to enjoy the show! You were a great
audience. It was a perfect way to start the day!
MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS COMPETE IN NATIONWIDE CODING
COMPETITION: Twenty students in Sixth and Seventh Grade at Corbett Prep have decided put their skills to
the test by entering a national coding competition in partnership with CodeMonkey.com. Mr. Michael Johnson,
Instruction Technology Director, believes the more involved students are the more proficient they will become.
From now until May 1st, teams of ten middle schoolers will be coding, using a programming language called coffee
script, to complete literally hundreds of challenges. As we know, coding and computer science are a very valuable
skill set to learn in life, especially this early, as it opens many doors for our students to the fastest growing industry
of modern times, STEAM. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math). Mr. Mel’s best kept secret in the
East Side lab is now in a small brochure to reveal all of the many early lesson that our students experience under his
creative and high level instructional program for Pre-K4 through fifth grades. Thank you to our Coffee Talk parents
for requesting more information so they can also be informed! Look in your Thursday folder for Mr. Mel’s
information.

We are always proud to receive compliments that honor our students! This one is
very special! Congratulations to our Coaches for being great role models for our
students!!!
Letter to Coach Heller received after winning the first baseball game of the season:
Hello Coach Heller,
I wanted to send you a quick note to let you know how impressed I was with the boys sportsmanship on the Corbett Prep
baseball team. I am a parent of a middle school/high school player and the kids on that team we played yesterday really
impressed me. Throughout the game the boys were supporting their teammates that were newer to baseball during every
pitch and every at bat. Especially two of your better players which were the two boys that pitched and caught the first 4
innings. Despite those boys being more experienced, they were right there supporting the boys that were newer to the
game. That shows a level of leadership that you don’t often see in 12-14 year olds.
In particular, I would like to recognize the player that started out behind the plate and pitched the 3rd and 4th innings.
My son was the opposing pitcher in that game. After the game your player made a point to find my son and give him some
words of encouragement. With Carson being a younger player (6th grade) and losing a very competitive game, it really
meant a lot to him. Character and leadership are two traits that will take those young men a long way in their lives. I just
wanted to congratulate the staff at Corbett Prep as well as those boys’’ parents for doing a tremendous job in raising fine
young men (sent from a vice President of a major company which was also signed by him).
AN EIGHTH GRADE TRADITION for NINE YEARS in a ROW
CONTINUES TO BRING JOYFUL SHOUTS, TRUE FUN-FILLED
COMPETITION and COMMUNITY BONDING TO THE Middle
SCHOOL GYM.
On Tuesday, April 4th, middle school was bursting with sportsmanship and fun for the 2017 Powder Puff Game.
The 8th grade girls played the 6th and 7th grade girls in a game of flag football determined to win for their last hurrah on the
court. After an exciting game that went to overtime, the 8th grade team squeaked out a valiant victory! Middle School
Teachers were the announcers and the coaches for each team. They created quite an impressive event together by
positively motivating our kids! We were excited to welcome back Norman Buckingolts, class of 2016 to team up with Mr.
Chorvat as the sports announcers/commentators!!! The crowd of parents and students who came as spectators had a
fabulous time…long to be remembered!
Eighth grade boys were the brave, stunning and hysterical cheerleaders on the sidelines, before putting on an amazing half
time show! They were coached by our Cheerleading Coach and Math Wiz, Jeanne Rivera. Corbett Prep 8 th grade family,
the Sarmat's donated pizza from their downtown Tampa restaurant Eddie and Sam's NY Pizza. Thank you to our Sarmat
family for making this a delicious event and for raising money for the 8th grade class gift! (reported by Blythe Sobel).

PFA NEWS: BY PFA PRESIDENT, TAMMIE McFARLAND
Dear Fellow Corbett Prep Parents,
Volunteerism makes our school a better place, for all of our children AND adults. With only 8 weeks left in this school
year, we'd like to give a huge "Shout Out" to all of our Room Parent Coordinators (RPCs) for the
support they've provided this school year! You know who they are: coordinating classroom fun events, as well as liaising
on behalf of your classroom for school-wide events, and most importantly, ensuring you get the information you need
weekly with our Thursday folders.
Next time you see your RPCs, please thank them for being your "class champion!" Along those same lines, if YOU
are interested in becoming your child's "class champion" for next school year, we'd love to get you involved! Please
contact Laureen Mocsari at [email protected] and let her know the grade your child (or children) will be
moving into next year. Laureen would also be happy to answer any questions you may have. Additional school-wide
volunteer opportunities will come out in the Annual PFA Volunteer Handbook.
TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK April 10th – 13th:
THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
 Did you know that every Teacher at Corbett Prep is made of PURE GOLD?
 Did you know that every staff member at Corbett Prep has MAGIC POWERS?
 Do you believe in UNICORNS?
Yes/No? Maybe you should. Why you may ask? Well, because when the Corbett Prep Teachers and Staff members
were created, their creator decided to BREAK THE MOLD. You’ll have to search higher than high to find somebody,
anybody; better than the Faculty & Staff we have here at Corbett Prep! This year, we are going to have lots of fun
celebrating our Teachers during the Corbett Prep Annual Teacher Appreciation Week. Thank you to those who
participated in the classroom fund this year as it has helped make this possible! If you have any questions about Teacher
Appreciation Week, please contact Teacher Appreciation Week (TAW) Chair Lauren Lipschutz at

WE ARE SO PROUD!!! LOOK WHO WAS ON THE COVER OF
LIBRE MAGAZINE FROM MARCH 21, 2017
We asked our very own Odette Figueruelo Spanish teacher, (Mother to alum, Marcos Arias and
Aunt to Cool Cat, Daniel Figueruelo) to tell us all about this great honor and this is what she said. “I am
honored to be chosen the President of one of the oldest organizations in the Bay Area, Tampa Hispanic
Heritage Inc. for 2017.
Tampa Hispanic Heritage, Inc. preserves Tampa Bay’s Hispanic Heritage through the promotion of art,
education, and unity. I feel that all the leadership skills I continue to learn at Corbett Prep have contributed to
this great opportunity. I am looking forward to dedicating service to my beloved community!”
WOW!!! Read All About it!!!! Sixth Grader Christopher Cantor,
you deserve a
standing ovation for your success by going above and beyond in all you do!!! Thank you to our middle school
team for their encouragement and support! Congratulations to 6th Grader Christopher for being awarded a fourth
place medal in the Environmental category at the Florida State STEM Fair last week! Christopher received a
cash award of $300.00 for his project titled, The Effect of a Hurricane on the Biodiversity of Microorganisms in
the Tampa Bay Estuary. He compared a population study of the bay he did last year before the hurricane to
another study he did this year to determine how the hurricane affected the ecosystem’s marine population.
“We join his parents in being so proud of his dedication, hard work, and scientific knowledge,” said our
extraordinary Science Teacher, Mrs. Morey, when talking about Christopher!!!
