Poems
inspired
by Art
This year’s annual schools competition asks students aged 7- 18 years old to write a short poem inspired by
a work of art.
Each year the Trust designs a competition sponsored by the John Lewis Partnership that fosters collaboration
between different school departments. Previous years’ competitions have included Sculpture Songs (Art &
Music), Look Up (Art & Geography), Secret Life (Art & Mathematics) and Artists Chairs (Art & Design). The
competition is judged in the below three categories.
Junior (Yr2 - Yr6)
Middle (Yr7 - Yr9)
Senior (Yr10 - Yr13)
1st Prize: £50
1st Prize: £75
1st Prize: £100
2nd Prize: £25
2nd Prize: £50
2nd Prize: £75
The work of art could be a painting, sculpture or object d’art, and can be from any historical period. The work
need not be of great renown. Traditional and contemporary styles of poetry are welcome and the poem should
be of no more than 16 lines.
When writing their poem, students and teachers may wish to consider the following themes and approaches:
Narratives: imagining a story within or about the work of art
Voices: speaking as a subject within a work of art or even a work of art itself
Impressions: describing the colours, mood and technique of a work of art
Questions: interpreting the possible meanings of a work of art
