NASSAU COMMUNITY COLLEGE BASIC TAX PREPARATION TRAINING Gain Valuable Skills in a 3-Week Boot Camp Are you interested in a great seasonal work opportunity that withstands economic fluctuations? Consider becoming a tax preparation professional. Nassau Community College, in partnership with Jackson Hewitt, is offering a three week course in Basic Tax Preparation taught by a seasoned tax professional. In this course students will be taught the fundamentals of completing U.S. tax returns (Federal and State) and during the last class session will take Jackson Hewitt’s course exam to earn a certificate of course completion. The course will also prepare students to take the NY State certifying exam when it becomes available. When the NY State certifying exam is available Tax Preparers will have three years to pass this exam. To work as a professional Tax Preparer, an individual must register with New York State (including responding to background check related questions), complete an additional 16 CEUS (offered for free and online by NYS) and pay a $100 fee to New York State. COVERED INCLUDE: • Filing requirements and filing status • Exemptions and dependents • Income categories and adjustments • Capital gains and losses • Standard and itemized deductions • Tax credits • Filing a return, refunds and payments • Practices, procedures, and ethics The tax preparation industry employs well over 300,000 people, generates over $9 billion in revenue, and is expected to grow 4 percent annually through 2018. Given its seasonality (the four months before April 15, the day on which income tax returns are due for individuals), becoming a tax preparer offers steady work on a part-time basis. Even as tax prep computer software becomes more accessible, largely 80% of tax returns continue to be prepared and filed through tax preparation professionals. The IRS estimates that there will be over 250 million tax returns filed by 2018, likely providing a consistent demand for tax preparers. Taxpayers need tax professionals to help them through the filing process. Get trained in the Federal and NY State tax code and learn to help clients maximize their refunds. CED 1260 A1 Meets: Monday to Thursday 8-4pm from November 28 to December 15 Fee: $299 (includes materials and exam) No prior tax experience necessary. Students must complete the full 96 hours of training to sit for the course exam. Enrollment in, or completion of, the Basic Tax Preparation course is neither an offer nor a guarantee of employment.
