MAKING A DIFFERENCE TOGETHER
The YMCA Changes Lives . . .
By Alyssa Keen
Program Participants & Employ-
YMCA Summer Camp is beyond
description. It’s a magical and
wonderful place where children
are allowed (and strongly
encouraged) to be ridiculous,
have fun, explore their
surroundings, learn new things
and push their boundaries, all
without fear of ridicule.
As a new Y employee, I didn’t
understand the impact that this
program could have on the lives
of children. Much more to my
astonishment, I had no idea how
this summer job would change my
life forever.
My camp position has allowed me the opportunity to grow. It has taught me confidence, tolerance and patience.
It taught me how to change a child’s tears into a smile with just a few simple words. I learned that everyone
deserves kindness, to love people as they are, but most importantly, I learned how to be myself, how to be a
better person.
I have never felt immediately at ease in any other place like I have at the Duneland Family YMCA. This is my
place. My home away from home, where I feel most comfortable in my own skin. Being a Y camp counselor is the
best decision I have ever made. It is so much more than a job, being a counselor is the most rewarding and
gratifying experience that I have ever had. The YMCA truly allows people of all ages the opportunity to discover
who they are and what they can achieve.

THE 2016 ‘STARS’
ARE ALIGNED
The Duneland Family YMCA will host the 5th Annual Dancing
Like The Stars on Saturday, November12 in the Stardust Event
Center at the Blue Chip Casino. This year’s theme is “Peace,
Love & the Duneland YMCA” featuring music from the 1970s
when flower power reigned. Take a trip down memory lane
and get your groove on by dressing the part. Dig out your old
headbands, go-go boots and tie-dye, and arrive ready to
travel back in time to the Age of Aquarius!
These Duneland celebrities are asking for your support as
they dance to ensure a brighter future for those in our
community in need of assistance. They’re all IN IT TO WIN IT!
There are several ways community members and businesses
can support the 2016 Stars: purchase a ticket or table to
attend the event in support of the Star of your choice; provide
a sponsorship or Silent Auction item; or support your bestie
by purchasing “votes” for them.
Visit www.dunelandymca.org and click on Dancing Like The
Stars to purchase tickets, cast votes for your favorite star or

VOLUNTEERS MAKE LIFELONG CONNECTIONS . . .
. . . Tom Roberts
Tom Roberts believes that a room full of children with
diverse religious and ethnic backgrounds do not have the
capacity to understand hatred. Tom goes on to state
“the Christian values of the Y teach our children love and
understanding of one another.”
Tom became a board member in the early 70s and to this
day continues his volunteer efforts. Little did Tom know
that some fifty years later, his love of the Y and passion
for the Duneland communities would be as strong as it
was in those early days. Tom’s leadership and service
inspired his children to follow his in footsteps. Tom’s son
Victor served as a past board Chair and daughter his
Kristin is the current board Treasurer. On occasion, their
Roberts shared that the crowded parking lot at the Y makes him very happy, but it is obvious that the community
has outgrown the Roosevelt Street home. He calls for the community to support a modern and larger facility, a
facility that would better serve the various age groups of its membership. He feels that our community has the
individuals and resources to accomplish this goal.
CHARITABLE GIVING
Make the most of what you gift!
Mark Chamberlain, CEO
There are several ways to give back to the YMCA that you probably haven’t thought about. Lakeside Wealth
Management’s CEO Mark Chamberlain recently sat down with the Duneland Family YMCA Board to demonstrate
simple charitable giving strategies that will help you give the most from your contributions.
Did you know…..
…There is a big difference between sponsoring an event and just making a simple donation. As a business owner
100% of a sponsorship can be tax exempt. A charitable gift may be subject to limitations, taxes and more.
…You can gift appreciated stock! If you donate your appreciated stock directly to a charity (rather than selling it
first and donating the gain), your gift is not subject to taxes.
…You can gift your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD). It can be gifted directly to a charity without being
taxed! Your RMD is the amount of money the IRS requires taxpayers over the age of 70.5 to withdraw from their
retirement accounts annually. Withdrawing your RMD and then donating the proceeds would be subject to taxes
and would reduce the amount your able to gift to the charity of your choice.
…You can gift an IRA. By naming a charity as a beneficiary on your IRA, the charity receives 100% of the
donation rather than being subject to federal, state and estate taxes. On a $1,000,000 IRA, the donor could be
taxed up to $563,333, leaving only $436,667 to donate to the charity.
