Business Challenge
As a nutrition manufacturer, DSM Nutritional Products always regarded quality management as a top priority and spared no expense
or resource to collect, track and report on its quality processes. Yet with a broad global presence, DSM Nutritional Products also
maintained multiple systems for tracking and reporting quality management data, creating an inefficient process and limited
transparency for managing global compliance and quality processes. Some sites utilized disparate, web-based applications, others
leveraged Excel-based programs and several even relied on paper-based methods to track and report on business-critical quality data.
The DSM Nutritional Products team, led by Dr. P. Alexander Bross, global product quality manager vitamin E and A and the head of
DNP’s global change commission, realized that the disparate systems were not conducive to collaboration between different regions,
offices or departments and not ideal for capturing quality information on a global scale. While different sites could identify, track and
report on problems, trends and issues specific to their regions, DSM Nutritional Products needed to standardize its quality management
system and find a better way to gain comprehensive visibility into its processes across the enterprise.
Solution and Implementation
DSM Nutritional Products began a search for a quality management solution that would globalize, standardize and automate multiple
quality processes throughout all entities of the business group. DSM Nutritional Products eventually chose Sparta Systems’ TrackWise®
enterprise quality management software (EQMS) due to its scalability and configurability to meet the company’s very specific business
needs.
DSM Nutritional Products decided to utilize TrackWise to manage 17 distinct quality processes, including internal and external audits,
supplier audits, deviations and a range of investigations and Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) incidents.
Training
To ensure optimal end-user adoption and learning, DSM Nutritional Products worked with Sparta Systems to implement an innovative,
extensive training program before go-live on four pilot sites in the United States, Brazil, Scotland and Switzerland.
Sparta Systems’ professional services team worked closely with DSM Nutritional Products users to ensure they were comfortable and
proficient with TrackWise. Training sessions were specially designed to simulate TrackWise production, allowing users to practice and
build experience navigating the system, submitting records, retrieving notifications and sharing information.
This hands-on training, combined with the TrackWise Proficiency Pack (TPP), Sparta Systems’ comprehensive content and training
platform, and access to the TrackWise e-Learning On-Demand offerings, ensured that DSM Nutritional Products users had a smooth
transition to the new system. And, in the event they needed more information, they could access training tools anytime, anywhere.
Results
As a truly global project, TrackWise is in the process of being deployed across 80 sites around the world, including, Japan, Australia,
China, South Africa, Germany, Russia and France and translated into six different languages.
Today, TrackWise is being used by approximately 1,750 DSM Nutritional Products end users across the globe and they plan to increase
that number to 2,000 in the near future.
Additionally, more than 50 designed KPI reports are used by management as dashboard cockpits to manage and monitor the processes
and, while doing so, contributing to DSM Nutritional Products injury free environment and quality for life objectives.
