CONSTITUTION OF THE MACARTHUR HIGH SCHOOL CHEERLEADERS Each member of the MacArthur HS IISD Cheerleaders must adhere to the following articles. It must be understood that as an athlete of this cheer program, the student becomes a representative of the Irving ISD and MacArthur HS, and each athlete must maintain high moral and ethical standards. I. Mission Statement & Purpose The purpose of the MacArthur High School Cheerleaders is to create and promote loyal school spirit, encourage quality performance and high academic standards. Through the development of spirit and cheer technique, leadership, cooperation, self-discipline, and sportsmanship in each individual athlete, the MacArthur HS IISD cheerleaders will encourage their student body and their community through support in the promotion of athletic events and activities which will inspire the athletes to perform to the best of their ability. We, the MacArthur HS IISD cheerleaders hereby pledge our time, our ability, our minds and hearts to that purpose. We agree to abide by the rules and regulations as set forth in this constitution. II. Commitment We realize that cheerleading can take up an extreme amount of time. Cheerleaders must be available throughout the season for practices, games and extra duties/performances. A MacArthur Cheer season runs from March to March and all cheerleaders will be held accountable for upholding this constitution. Sometimes, cheer activities may be last minute. You are representatives of the school and will be called upon throughout the year. This is why we want to let you know an important commitment needs to be made when deciding to become a cheerleader. Cheerleading at MacArthur should be your first priority and no conflicting activities are allowed. It is imperative that only those who are willing to give 100% try out for cheerleader. Make sure this is a commitment you are willing to make. Irving Cheerleader Constitution: A cheerleader candidate should enter this activity with an understanding that, if elected, the student is expected to fulfill all cheerleading responsibilities. An elected cheerleader has an obligation to the student body to attend all practices and scheduled games and to perform all other cheerleading duties to the best of his/her ability. Cheerleading takes priority over all other extracurricular activities. If at any time a cheerleader wishes to leave the program or is suspended from the squad, a refund cannot be given. III. General Expectations a. b. c. d. e. f. g. Know the required cheers, chants, dances and partner stunts. Develop a spark of leadership and cooperation with all squad members. Work hard during practices, clinic, camps and games. Practice courtesy, self-control, tolerance, and respect for the rights of others. Practice grace in winning as well as in losing. Be cooperative and respectful of the coaches AT ALL TIMES! Be loyal to the school, the team, and other cheerleaders and to teach respect, discipline and love of school to all students attending MacArthur. Maintain an excellent appearance at all times. Remember actions and appearance speaks louder than a thousand words. Follow the student code of conduct at ALL times, including the dress code. Any skills performed during tryouts (i.e. tumbling) will be required throughout the year. h. i. j. Irving Cheerleader Constitution: Cheerleaders will conduct themselves properly at all times since they are official representatives of the school. Conduct on dates or at parties should be above reproach. Conduct in the classroom should also be of a caliber which sets a good example to other students. Reports of misconduct will be reviewed by the sponsor and school administrator. IV. Game Day/ Performance Expectations Note: Cheerleading squads are chosen by the potential that is shown at tryouts. No cheerleader will perform at games until they know all of the game material. Performing at any event other than games- including Spring show, pep rallies, camp performances- will require that the cheerleader be able to perform to the standards of the rest of the team. There will be a weekly, mandatory tryout process for these performances. The coach will have full discretion as to whether the cheerleader will perform. a. All cheerleaders must arrive to the games on time which is generally an hour prior to the start of the game. For away games, JV and Varsity cheerleaders will be required to be at the bus on time. Consequences will be given for those who are late. (See “Consequences” section) b. c. If you miss the bus, you will not cheer that game (or attend as a cheerleader). You will also sit out the next game. In regards to Away games, JV and Varsity Cheerleaders will be required to ride the bus to and from the game. The cheerleader may leave the game with their parent. Coaches will not allow cheerleaders to leave away games with another party without the parent present. Phone calls will not suffice. d. All cheerleaders must arrive to the game ready to perform. Hair must be in proper style and makeup must be complete. Entire uniform must be worn with no visible tattoos, all piercing removed, and no nails or nail polish. (Clear polish ONLY) e. All cheerleaders are expected to smile, yell all cheers/ chants, perform all dances, show spirit and jump after each routine, and exhibit the behavior set forth in this constitution. f. All cheerleaders should stay in position in “At Ease” when not performing, and in “Attention” before the start of a cheer/chant/dance. g. Cheerleaders are not allowed to leave position during a game to talk to people in the crowd, check their cell phones, take pictures, etc. h. During the National Anthem, cheerleaders are to stand in position and remain quiet. i. All Varsity Cheerleaders are required to put up signs before the start of each home game and are not allowed to leave until dismissed by the coach upon completion of sign take-down and trash pickup. j. All Cheerleaders will be expected to arrive back from halftime at the designated time. k. All cheerleaders are required to be picked up 15 minutes after each home game, and 15 minutes after the cheerleaders arrival back to the school from away games. l. The coaching staff is not permitted to give rides to student athletes. m. n. o. p. Attendance at all games is mandatory. All cheerleaders MUST attempt each routine. Trying out is not optional. You must give your all in each routine! No leaving from a game early unless there is an emergency and the coach has been notified by the parent. Items needed at every game: complete and proper uniform, hair in ponytail, poms, proper briefs & megaphone. If you are missing any part of your uniform, you will not be able to cheer. In cold weather, only the cheer sweatshirt or cheer warm-ups may be worn. All team members must wear the same thing and look uniformed!!! V. Summer Camp Expectations a. It is mandatory for ALL MHS Cheerleaders to attend summer camp. b. During Camp, each cheerleader must not use their cell phone nor bring their cell phones during the required practice times. In case of emergencies, contact the coach. c. All cheerleaders must be on time to each event and/or group meeting. d. Learn all material! e. Be respectful to the coaches and camp staff at all times. f. NEVER give up! Give it your all! Show enthusiasm! g. Chant each time we enter/exit a class. (We want that SPIRIT STICK!) h. During camp, parents will only be allowed to attend the Final Show Off on the last day of camp. VI. Practice Expectations a. b. Practices will begin after school once the team is elected. These practices will usually be on Tuesday and Thursday. Practice will also be held once the school year ends, just before camp begins two-three times per week. These practices are MANDATORY. Please make transportation arrangements. Two weeks before school begins, cheerleaders will begin to practice again for the upcoming season. SUMMER PRACTICES are MANDATORY. Please make transportation arrangements. Cheerleaders should wear the following for every practice: T-shirts, shorts, socks, and old cheer shoes or shoes suitable to jump in. Hair will always be worn off the shoulders and face. There should not be any stragglers hanging in the eyes. NO JEWELRY, WATCHES, RINGS, OR EARRINGS. At the conclusion of after school practices, all cheerleaders are required to have prior arrangements to depart within 15 minutes. It is the cheerleader’s responsibility to arrange transportation to and from practices, the coaching staff is not permitted to give rides to student athletes. c. d. e. f. VII. Class Expectations Overview a. b. c. Once the new school year begins, cheerleading is a 4th period class. All cheerleaders are expected to dress out daily beginning the first day of school. Failure to dress out and participate in class practices will result in grade deductions. Students in this class must fulfill specific requirements for performance, which will be evaluated by the teacher, as in any other class. This is considered a Physical Education Class and we WILL follow the P.E. Guidelines. We will use this class time every day, whether for conditioning, practicing, or learning new material. Once football and basketball season are complete, cheerleaders who remain in the class will STILL be required to dress out and condition 3 days per week. Failure to comply will result in a deduction of their grade. A class syllabus will be given at the beginning of the school year. VIII. Social Media a. b. All cheerleaders will be required to share their Twitter, IG, Facebook with their coach. Cheerleaders should not be using profanity ( shorthand profanity included), posting disrespectful insults about cheer, teachers, or administration, nor posting subliminal tweets about another cheerleader or student that could be a catalyst for “bullying.” IX. Attendance b. The only excused absences are personal illness with a doctor’s note, death, or serious illness in the family. Extenuating circumstances will be addressed on an individual basis. Unexcused absences include anything outside of personal illness with a doctor’s note, death, or serious illness. If you are present at school on the day of a game, you cannot call in sick for the game. If you do, it will be an unexcused absence. If you are late or absent, tell your COACH, do not ask a teammate to inform the coach; this will be considered an unexcused absence or tardy. c. Each squad member will be allowed one unexcused absence per semester with advance notice of at least one week to the sponsor. Reasons other than those listed above will be unexcused including driving times/lessons, work (give your cheer schedule to your employer well in advance), studying (time management is the key) and any of these sayings: “I forgot”, “I didn’t read/lost my calendar”, “I’m too tired”. Unexcused absences and missing an activity without prior notice to the sponsor will both result in a game probation as stated in the IISD Cheerleader Constitution. Tardiness will result in being benched for the game. PARENT PHONE CALLS/TEXT ON THE DAY OF A PERFORMANCE/PRACTICE does not constitute an excused absence/tardy and the cheerleader will be penalized as stated in this constitution. a. Because of the nature of cheerleading, each cheerleader plays an active role in each and every practice and game. There is no one “on the bench” who can take your place. In order to get the most from each practice, every cheerleader is expected to attend all practices, games and functions. An updated calendar will be distributed monthly. Please keep in mind that at times an event will come up to attend that is not on the calendar. Every effort will be made to give you as much notice as possible. If you are absent when the calendars are distributed, it is your responsibility to make sure that you receive one. Irving Cheerleader Constitution: It is imperative that cheerleaders have good attendance records in school. Any absence from a game, being tardy to a game, or any absence from school may result in temporary suspension or permanent dismissal from the squad. Cheerleaders should be present every day of the school week. Any member absent from practice the day before a performance or absent from school the day of a performance may not perform. X. Illness and Injury a. b. c. d. If any cheerleader is injured in any way at a practice, game, or other scheduled event, they are required to immediately let a coach or athletic trainer know. If any cheerleader has an injury or illness that results in non-performance at a practice or game, they are still expected to attend the practice or game with the team (unless the illness is contagious or injury prevents the same) If any cheerleader is going to miss a practice or game because of any injury or illness, they are required to contact the coach by phone or email at least 24-48 hours prior to the scheduled event unless an emergency, then notify as soon as possible. If an injury occurs that keeps the student out of two practices, a note from the student's parent or doctor stating the reason will be required. If the injury restricts the student from three or more practices, a doctor's note will be required. This note should state the nature of the injury, the length of time of the restriction, the specific task the student cannot perform, and any special instructions. Lack of participation will be categorized as missing practice if there is no note. XI. Uniforms & Cheer Items a. Cheerleading uniforms are provided by the school. Any damage done to a school-owned uniform or cheer item shall be repaired at the team member’s expense, including replacement if necessary. The cheer sponsor will provide you with an invoice. Any alterations must have the prior approval of the sponsor. Uniforms and cheer items must be returned within 2 weeks of end of season or dismissal from squad. All cheerleader clothing, uniforms, jackets, etc. are to be worn by current MacArthur cheerleaders only. Athletes of the cheer program may not loan out any IISD cheerleading apparel to any non-cheerleaders except for Powder Puff. Students who have been dismissed or voluntarily removed from the squad may not wear cheerleading apparel in public, under any circumstances. Uniforms will not be worn anywhere other than scheduled events. The use of any part of the IISD cheerleading uniforms, clothing and supplies other than at scheduled events must be approved by the cheer coach. b. c. d. Irving Cheerleader Constitution: The uniforms must be returned clean and in good condition at the end of the school year. Uniforms damaged due to neglect will be paid for by the cheerleader as determined by the sponsor. Parts of the uniform are personal items and will be paid by the parents and members…Excellent care of uniforms is mandatory at all times…Uniforms will not be worn except for games and pep rallies unless permission is given by the sponsor. XII. Grades a. b. Students who pass all courses for the six week period are eligible for the next six week period. Cheerleaders enrolled in Pre-AP, AP, and/or Honors courses are allowed ONE (1) waiver for the school year for one class only. Students whose grades drop below 70 in any course at the end of a six week period will lose eligibility. Students who lose eligibility and then regain eligibility must wait seven calendar days before they become eligible to participate in performances. Students who are ineligible will continue to practice, but they may not perform. Students who have failed a class may regain eligibility after three weeks; however at the end of the three weeks, they must be passing all courses, not just the one they failed. They also have a seven day calendar waiting period after the three week or six week period before eligibility may be regained. A cheerleading suspension will be assigned if a cheerleader is ineligible. Suspension from cheerleading two times for the year will result in automatic dismissal from the squad as stated in the IISD Cheer Constitution. A cheerleader who receives an incomplete grade on their report card for any six weeks grading period or semester exams may not participate until the grades are reported. Cheerleaders will need to attend all practices, but may not participate in any performance until the incomplete grade has been turned into the counselor’s office by the teacher. If a cheerleader fails a class for two consecutive six week periods, he/she will be dismissed from the squad. c. d. e. f. g. XIII. Cost a. The expense for a MacArthur cheerleader during the 2016-2017 school year is $980 for new incoming cheerleader and $860 for returning cheerleaders. If for any reason a cheerleader does not complete the season, there will be NO refund of payments or fundraising money. New/Incoming Cheerleaders payments will be due in two installments of $ 350 AND one installment of $ 280. Returning Cheerleaders payments will be due in two installments of $300 AND one installment of $260.Please make all checks payable to MacArthur High School.
