MANY HIGHLIGHTS FROM A SUCCESSFUL TERM
As this week draws to a close it is timely to reflect back on the many achievements and successes of
the last 10 weeks. Our school offers an amazing array of opportunities that extend young people,
broaden their horizons and enrich their school experience. Just this term I can think of…..

Tiffani Stringer
In addition many students were involved in the JPSS soccer teams on Saturday morning, our students
were a big part of the excellent Youth Theatre ‘Hairspray’ production, Keely Dwyer was selected to
nd
play for South Australia in U15 girls soccer later this year and Rory Hill finished 2 in the South
Australian U16 Motocross Championships and is this week competing in the nationals for our state.
In recent weeks 2017 school captain speeches & voting have occurred. Following on from last year
we had seven excellent candidates and all delivered thoughtful, well prepared and articulate
addresses to an assembly of all students. O’Reilly Gray (male captain) & Kristy Wild (female captain)
along with Kallan Bauer and Breeanna Warne have been selected as school captains for 2017.
I am constantly in awe of the achievement of many of our students and the commitment of so many
staff and parents who push the boundaries every day to maximise learning for young people in our
community. We look forward to another active, productive Term 4.

Mid North Regional Basketball Carnival for Students
with Disabilities, 2016
and organisations that have once again supported the carnival
through services, facilities and donations. Without them we
could not afford to make it happen.
Deb Tregilgas (M36)
Festival of the Arts
M36, Ms Simpson and the Mid North Education Centre worked
together again to run another very successful 2 day basketball
carnival.
With 9 teams from
as far afield as
Whyalla,
Pt
Augusta,
Clare
and, for the first
time, Kadina came
together for 2
action
packed
days. A round
robin competition
of mini-games saw most play 8-10 games. Opened by the
Education Director, Ms Terry Sizer, she was impressed by the
level of fair play and sportsmanship she had already witnessed.
For the students who attend there are many highlights. First
there are the friends they have made at previous carnivals, and
then there is the chance to play in one of the best facilities in the
region, Donaldson Stadium. The hot food from the canteen
always rates a mention from all involved. The support of not only
the teachers and SSOs is a vital factor but so too is the amount of
parents,
relatives and
caregivers
who come
from all over
to see their
kids play. Lastly, and never to be forgotten, is the great dinner
and disco in the Solomontown clubrooms on the Thursday night.
Everyone sleeps well after it is all over.
A lot of time and effort goes into the smooth running of this
event and for many participants this may be the only time they
get to experience that stadium effect while playing sport. No one
goes home without being recognised for their efforts with smiley
faces all around. We would like to thank those students, Kye,
Scott, Michael, Adam and Matthew who came as scorers and
umpires. We also need to thank the many community members
The Festival of the Arts was held on Wednesday September
14, in the Resource Centre. The event was a great success
and continued to build on the progress of previous years.
This year saw the JPSS Art Prize being judged by
community members; David Kilsby (Director of Community
and Corporate at the Port Pirie Regional Council), Judy
Crosby (local artist) and Shae Morrison (Past Art Teacher of
JPSS). David opened the night by announcing the winners
of the JPSS Art Prize; commenting on the high level of
medium application and originality of the entries. The
audience was then entertained by a number of music acts,
visual arts displays and drama production ‘Box’ by Lindsay
Price.

Students were then involved in making initial choices for year 10
elective subjects and indicated the level of Maths and English
they would like to study. During Term 4 students will be involved
in subject counselling with subject counsellor and will choose
from the structured grid. If you would like to be more involved in
the process, an appointment time can be made with Student
Counsellors, Care Group Teachers or Year 9 Coordinators in Term
4. Alternatively, you can access the Prospectus - Pathways to the
Future Senior Handbook from the website. This provides
information on all possible pathways throughout year 10 – 12.

FFSA Visit
On Thursday 22 and Friday 23 September 2016, Cristiano Dos
Santos from the Football Federation of South Australia (FFSA)
visited the school. Students were given the opportunity to
receive specialist soccer training with Cristiano in Futsal and
Outdoor Soccer sessions. Students were able to showcase their
soccer skills to a former Adelaide United superstar, but more
importantly, they were able to receive feedback on their skills! A
special thanks to Cristiano for coming to JPSS, and we hope to
see him more in the future.

Alternative SACE Program (S37)
As part of the transition process, some students have been
identified who may benefit from an alternative pathway to
achieve their SACE. Students identified will receive a letter
explaining the alternative program and invitation to accept
placement in this class. During Term 4, students will meet with
the Learning Difficulties Team to make their choices. More
information can be found in the Prospectus – Pathways to the
Future Senior Handbook – Alternative SACE class.

Rory Hill competed in the South Australian Motorcross
Championships earlier this year. Rory had a successful
nd
Championship finishing 2 in the 85cc 13-u 16 year class. Rory
was selected to represent South Australia in the Australian
Championships that was held in Renmark from September 24October 1.
Year 9 to 10 Subject Selection
It is that time of the year when we begin the counselling process
for students transitioning from middle school to senior school. At
the end of last term, all year 9 students were presented with
the possible pathway options for all subjects that can be studied
at John Pirie Secondary School.
