Animalia at Windermere PS
At Windermere two grade one classes wanted to use the
resource. The purpose for watching the episode was for
students to engage in a discussion about the importance
of road safety. After the students viewed episode five, it
became apparent there was more than road safety to
discuss.
Students were put into groups to answer questions about
the episode.
Students completed an activity on road safety.

Each group of students covered one of these questions:
•
•
•
•
•
What did the children think of the animals?
What would you have done to save the core?
What did the animals think of the children?
What do you think of the animals and children?
Why should people talk to each other?
Animalia at Windermere PS
Richard used Animalia with his Grade 5/6 so I decided to
have a look for myself with my Grade 4.
There were a lot of follow up activities that could be done
with just one episode. As with the Grade one class we
talked about road safety issues as they are always current.
In our discussion we took it further discussing who caused
the accident.
Discussions around narrative and persuasive text would also
be a key component of viewing any of these episodes. E.g.
Tryannicus and gossip and scare mongering
I found that we needed an in-depth discussion about the
meaning of the core as this aspect of the story was missed
by the students first up.
