Biomes – The aim is for students to understand what an ecosystem is and where are the world
biomes located.
Students will study Rainforests, deserts and mountains. They will gain an understanding of
animal and plant adaptations, climate and the people who live there.
Term Two
Plate tectonics – The aim is for the students to understand how the earths structure causes
major geological hazards.
Students will study Volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis.
Term Three
Development – The aim is for students to understand how places differ in terms of their level
of development.
Students will study the differences between an LEDC and MEDC, Ghana, trade and Fairtrade.

Topic one: Economic activity – The aim is for students to understand the different
employment sectors and how employment structure changes as a country develops.
Topic two: Similarities and differences – The aim is for students to compare the physical and
human geography of Africa and Asia.
Term Two
Topic one: Weather and climate – The aim is for students to understand how the weather and
climate impacts on different places and peoples lives. Students will study hurricanes,
flooding and drought.
Topic two: Use of natural resources and climate change – The aim is for students to
understand how the worlds population is putting pressure on natural resources and the
changing climate.
Term Three
Population, migration and urbanisation – The aim is for students to understand the impacts of
population growth and structure on different places and why we are seeing increasing
patterns of urbanisation and migration.

Topic one: Rivers– The aim is for students to understand the physical processes responsible for
the shape of rivers and coast and how humans use these environments.
Topic two: Coasts – The aim is for students to develop their understanding of coastal
processes through the completion of a virtual field study of Porlock Bay.
Term Two
Topic one: The Arctic – The aim is for students to understand the physical and human
elements of this extreme environments. Students will study the climate, animal adaptations,
glaciers.
Topic two: Geological Timescales – The aim is for students to understand how the earth has
changed over its time. They will study the earth’s story along with the ice age. Rocks,
resources and scenery – The aim is for students to understand rocks, weathering and soils.
Term Three
Topic one: Global development issues – the aim is for students to understand the impacts of
different levels of development in Africa and Asia by studying sweatshops, NICs and poverty
solutions
Topic two: Superpowers – The aim is for students to understand the world’s leading and
emerging nations. Students will study Russia, USA and China.
