Walk a Thon
The Walk a Thon has been
moved to March 13th.
Watch for more
information in the Spring.
We have enjoyed a great beginning here at J.R. Smith. Students
are feeling a little more settled and routines are being
established. We want to welcome all parents who are new to our
school and invite you to get involved in the great volunteer
programs here at J.R. Smith Elementary.
I would encourage all of you to check out the district website,
www.wasatch.edu. We have a school page there also. We are
continually adding new information that would be helpful to
you. We also have a facebook page and are using that with
greater regularity.
Thank you for sharing your great children with us. They are
doing an awesome job of being safe, kind, and responsible.
We enjoy them so much!

The ABC’s of Crayons to College and Career Program is back this year. We are so excited to help more students start saving for college.
There is a nationwide push for educators in all grade levels to ensure that when students graduate from high school, they are college and career
ready. As a result of this, students at J.R. Smith Elementary School will have the opportunity to participate in the ABC’s of Crayons to College
and Career program. This program is designed to focus on one attribute a week that will help students learn the skills to succeed now and in the
future.
Each week, Mr. Brown will announce the attribute for that week and what it means. Teachers will have posters in their classrooms as a reminder
of what attribute we are focusing on. Students will be asked to practice that specific skill during the week. Sometime during that week, each
teacher will select a student who has demonstrated that skill well, and that student will be given a ticket to be put in for a weekly drawing for a
$10 college savings certificate. The winning student will be drawn the following Wednesday and will receive a prize, $10 college savings
certificate and parents will be notified. In addition to earning the $10 college savings certificate and prize from the school, as of the date of this
publication, Wells Fargo Bank, Utah Community Credit Union, Heber Valley Bank, America First Credit Union, Mountain America Credit Union
and Zions Bank have generously agreed to partner with the schools and match the original $10. We are so grateful for the wonderful community
partners we have that are so invested in helping our students succeed.
The weekly skills and attributes we will be focusing on for the month of September include the following:
Attitude: Attitudes control our lives. They are a secret power working 24-hours a day. People with positive attitudes are healthier, have more
friends, do better in school and live longer. Want to be happy? Think good thoughts.
Behavior: Manage yourself and mind your manners wherever you go. Staying in control of what you think and feel will help you decide what to
do. Be friendly and kind to people. Be a bucket-filler. A simple smile can make someone's day. Your beliefs don’t make you a better person,
your behavior does.
College and Training: College does not necessarily mean a 4-year degree. Between 2008 and 2018, 63% of job openings will require some
postsecondary education. That means you will need some type of education after high school. This could be a commitment of 1, 2, 4 or more
years of specialized training.
Communication: Can you speak effectively and be a good listener? The way you share your thoughts and express your needs, while listening to
others’ needs and wishes can either build or burn bridges with friends. Develop skills in speaking, listening, non-verbal, written and visual
communication to ensure a successful future.
Determination: Determination is simply not giving up no matter how hard things get, or how badly you want to. Keep on keeping on. The
difference between possible and impossible lies in a person’s determination.
Along with content knowledge, there is an increasing need for students to learn “soft skills.” Learning the ABC’s of Crayons to College and
Career skills, practicing these skills at school and having them reinforced at home will help students master the skills needed to be college and
career ready and ultimately be successful in the future.
