Graphic Novel Design – Ms Ellis Dyck 0.5 Credit - Grade 8-12 Limit: 24 students Fee: None This intensive is seeking artists and story writers in grades 8-12 to develop their own 8-page comics. In addition to being guided through the process of planning and drawing comics, students will read and analyze popular graphic novels and web comics and meet and learn from illustration majors at a local university. A visit from a local comic artist is possible. Origami: Beyond the Folds – Ms Ashley Satterthwaite & Ms Serena Cofer 0.5 Credit - Grade 6-8 Limit: 40 students Fee: None Prerequisite: None Did you know that folding paper has helped us explore outer space? Perform complex heart surgeries? And create mythical creatures? This is just the beginning! Origami (the art of paper folding) is used in so many ways! Many things in and around us exist because of unique folding patterns and structures. In this intensive we will explore the art, science and mathematics of Origami to investigate how it is being used throughout the world to enhance discovery and provide possible solutions to modern problems. Musical Theatre Dance Intensive – Ms Katie Hunter 0.5 Credit - Grade 6-8 Limit: 25 students Fee: None Prerequisite: Audition required on Oct 24 from 3:00 - 5:00 for all lead roles Students will learn the repertory from the musical, 'Once on This Island'. With the primary focus of this intensive on movement, those enrolled in the Musical Theatre dance intensive will focus on the movement vocabulary and dance scenes from 'Once on This Island'. Students will perform the play in its entirety for the Celebration of Learning in conjunction with Miss Mindy's Musical Theatre Intensive. Costume Design+ – Ms Cynthia Stephens 0.5 Credit - Grade 6-8 Limit: 24 students Fee: None Prerequisite: None Calling all fashionable people! We are collaborating for a wonderful performance of Once on This Island. This will be performed by your fellow students at AISU. We will design props, costumes, headpieces, and masks! Come join us. We will also be creating a designer look for a Celebration of Learning Fashion Show. Reduce Reuse Recycle – Ms Aeowyn Pelca 0.5 Credit - Grade 6-8 Limit: 18 students Fee: None Prerequisite: None Learn about ecological impact of use of resources. Examine AISU's environmental footprint. Assess how we can reduce our impact. Come up with a plan to make changes and raise awareness of the plan to encourage participation. Science Experiments – Ms. Jennifer Kasameyer 0.5 Credit - Grade 6-8 Limit: 30 students Fee: None Prerequisite: None Students in 10 days will do 100 science experiments of all kinds using everyday household supplies and discover the science concepts behind the magic. Prepare to get messy! Science concepts covered will be in Chemistry and Physics with other discoveries as well. This is primarily a hands on intensive with emphasis on learning the concepts behind the magic. Basic Electronic skills will be learned as well. The Art of Baking – Ms. Caprice Bailey 0.5 Credit - Grade 6-8 Limit: 24 students Fee: None Prerequisite: None In this intensive, we will be making simple yet delicious baked goods and deserts. We will also create a mini cookbook with all of the recipes used in class. One or two field trips will be planned to visit local bakeries in the area. If you want to learn more about the skill of baking, this intensive is for you. Disc Golf – Coach Kavanagh 0.5 Credit - Grade 6-8 Limit: 22 students Fee: None Prerequisite: None Would you like to learn about a growing sport that is redefining how a frisbee is used? Then come join Coach Kavanagh on a Disc Golf Adventure. Over the course of the two weeks we will visit and play on outdoor courses in the Salt Lake Valley. We will play in variety of conditions outside, so dress for success! We will learn about sport specific conditioning and injury prevention. You will learn about different types of throws and discs. We will cover basic to advanced game play, how to read the course and disc selection. Disc golf is a great lifelong activity that you can play with friends in a competitive or non-competitive manner; the choice is yours. Ears on the Prize: AISU Musical History Tour – Mr Geoffrey Dean & Ms Kimberly Marsden 0.5 Credit - Grade 6-8 Limit: 12 students Fee: None Prerequisite: Optional $30 fee for competition Want to compete in a national Music Listening Contest (MLC)? Start prepping for it now as you explore the lives and music of the MLC composers in historical context and learn to quickly recognize musical styles and genres by ear. You will compete in 3-member listening teams to develop a foolproof plan of attack for the Utah regional MLC in January, where both MS and HS prizes will be awarded. High-School teams also compete for the chance to go on to the MLC National Finals in Minneapolis. We will also be experiencing live music performances both on and off campus. Intro to Conducting an Orchestra, Band or Choir – Mr Don Miller 0.5 Credit - Grade 6-12 Limit: 24 students Fee: None Prerequisite: None Have you seen a conductor of an orchestra, choir or band? Have you wondered how they do it? How can one person stand in front of a group of musicians with a stick and keep them together to make beautiful music? Conducting is about leading, inspiring and conductor selfconfidence. Different styles of conducting will be presented by Dr. Don, special guests, and dancers to develop your own style of leadership. Wonderful Wasatch Front – Mr Dalton Peery & Ms Emily Glende 0.5 Credit - Grade 6-8 Limit: 50 students Fee: $25 Prerequisite: Students must be completed on their Tri 1 core class The WWF (Wonderful Wasatch Front) was a hit last spring and so it is back again. Emily Glende and Dalton Peery will be taking MS students around Salt Lake to visit the Utah Symphony, Grandeur Peak, the state Capitol, Liberty Park, the Pie Pizzeria, the U and many other fun locations. (If a student has previously taken this intensive they may NOT sign up again.) Greenhouse Intensive – Mr Erik Bowen 0.5 Credit - Grade 6-8 Limit: 24 students Fee: None Prerequisite: None Every school should have a greenhouse or two, or maybe three or four… Join the Greenhouse Intensive and help us build a GeoDome greenhouse. This greenhouse is affordable, lightweight, portable and can be used to grow a variety of vegetables, fruits and plants in any season. Students will responsible for gathering the materials needed, planning the best location to build the structure and developing effective ways to share what we grow with our school and the surrounding community. Join the Greenhouse Intensive and help us grow and distribute fresh organic foods. STEM Explorers – Museum Design – Ms Kate Youmans 0.5 Credit - Grade 6-8 Limit: 24 students Fee: None Prerequisite: None Explore each of the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) through fun hands on activities and field trips! We will visit 3 museums and observe how they teach through exhibits, students will select their own topic to create an exhibit for others to learn from. The Equations of Outdoor Sports – Mr Peter Westman Grades: 6-8 Limit: 18 students Fee: None Prerequisite: None Do you love outside adventures? Do you wonder how math might relate to sports? Do you want to get ahead in your Math course? Do you want to catch up in your Math course? Join us and figure out how we can use math to measure, predict, and improve athletic performance. Each day we will do at least an hour of physical activity and an hour of math tutoring. Sewing & Cross Stitching – Ms Jean Sutterfield & Ms Suying Peck 0.5 Credit – Math Elective Grades: 6-12 Limit: 30 students Fee: None Prerequisite: None This intensive will offer students insight into the real world application of mathematics through the skill of sewing and cross stitching. During the intensive, students will create a variety of projects that will help them to develop a life skill as well as better their understanding of geometry, measurements and unit conversion. This will allow students to earn math credits while creating personal unique objects. Students may use materials provided or they can bring in their own fabric if they want a more personal touch.
