COLUMBIA ACADEMY COMMUNICATOR T H I R T Y-F I F T H Y E A R • VO LU M E 17 • 2014 THE DREAM BULLDOGS EARN TEAMS RECORD CHAMPIONSHIPS 1 FROM THE PRESIDENT “ WHILE PHYSICAL HEALTH AND STRENGTH ARE VALUABLE, SPIRITUAL HEALTH AND STRENGTH ARE MUCH MORE IMPORTANT.” —DR. JAMES A. THOMAS Dear Columbia Academy family, The 2013-14 school year was a historic one at Columbia Academy. After beginning the school year with a record enrollment of 841 students, we ended the year graduating 48 students who had the highest ACT average (24.6) in school history. In the midst of these milestones, we had one of the most successful athletic years that our school has ever seen. While this issue of The Communicator will focus on many aspects of our school offerings and accolades, we are including a special feature story on a very memorable and exciting year in our athletic program. When we raise the bar in any area of campus life, it continues to drive our entire school on to greatness at every level. I believe that success breeds success. As I think about athletics and its place at a Christian school, I am reminded of the passage in I Timothy 4:8 where Paul tells Timothy, “for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.” This passage helps me remember that while physical health and strength are valuable, spiritual health and strength are much more important. At Columbia Academy we are so fortunate to be able to use athletics as a tool to work the “spiritual muscles” of the heart and teach life lessons with eternal implications. Through athletics our students learn important lessons about sportsmanship, perseverance, effort, teamwork, responsibility, attention to detail, sacrifice, and discipline. Often a coach is one of the most influential people in a student’s life and has countless opportunities to shape Christian character. I am very thankful for our hardworking coaches at Columbia Academy and the Christ-like leadership they provide for our students. I cannot think of a better example of this leadership and discipleship than that represented by this year’s basketball team and coaches during an emotionally challenging year. Please take time to read a special basketball feature story about the Spears family and how the CA family became a powerful demonstration of God’s love while learning to overcome and endure trials and loss. Columbia Academy is a special place in so many ways. Ultimately, our school is made up of some of the best people I have ever had the privilege to work with and know. These people are fueled by their mission to minister to our students and help them reach their full potential in every aspect of life. Together, our team of CA staff and faculty are excited about the great things ahead in the 2014-2015 school year. It is truly a blessing to be a part of such a talented and dedicated group of individuals who desire the very best for our students. Please join me in a continual prayer for our students, faculty, staff, administration and board that the Lord will continue to pour His generous blessings upon us. Dr. James A. During football season this year, the expanding band program will be marching for the first time in more than eight years. The program has enjoyed a renewed interest in recent years and has grown to more than 55 students from the fifth through the twelfth grades. Band Director Mark Donahoo said his high school band is now ready to the move beyond the stands and out on the field. “We will be marching for the home football games as well as two parades later in the year,” Donahoo said. “This year we will focus on basics and use simple drills for the field in preparation for marching competitively next year.” In addition to marching, the band program has reached other milestones this year and entertained many crowds at different venues. Last fall, the high school band played at all varsity home football games and attended their first away game in many seasons. At the 2013 Homecoming game, CA band alumni were invited to come play with the current band. The band also marched in the Columbia Christmas Parade for the first time in eight years. All band students performed at a Christmas concert and the Spring Concert. Many soloists and ensembles also held a special concert where they played a broad range of music from composers like Mozart and Bach to artists like Queen and AC/DC. Many band students also continued to learn how to play competitively at the Mid-State Band auditions, and Donahoo took several band students to perform at King’s Island in Cincinnati, Ohio. Students perform at the Spring Band Concert. 4 “I am really excited about the future of the band program because every day these students surprise me with their many talents and their great attitudes in the program,” Donahoo said. “I am teaching these students ideas and concepts about music that they have never heard before, which allows them to develop into better trained artistic and competitive musicians.” For those students who enjoy acting and singing, Drama Director Rebecca Throneberry said she is encouraged by the increasing interest from students and families who are making contributions to help the theatre program grow. In the 2013-2014 school year, Upper School students put on a winter play “Little Women” and a spring musical revue “Vaudeville Tonight.” “I am incredibly proud of what my students accomplished this school year. They worked hard to make each performance a success, and their hard work paid off,” Throneberry said. “The audience was impressed with the level of talent we have at Columbia Academy. We’re all excited to see what’s in store for the future of the performing arts at CA.” In the 2014-2015 school year, Lower School students will be able to join a Junior Drama Club directed by Mrs. Tammy Nicholson. Plans are underway for the next phase of growth in the program to include elementary students in a larger scale musical production as interest in the program increases. ALUMNUS DANIEL SMITH RECEIVES PALMETTO MEDAL AT CITADEL One of the highest awards presented by The Citadel was bestowed on Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Smith, a 2010 Columbia Academy graduate and son of Linda and Scott Smith of Centerville. The Palmetto Medal is given to only one cadet per year who embodies the college’s definition of principled leaders. It is the second highest award presented by The Military College of South Carolina, second only to an honorary degree. On March 15, the Palmetto Medal Award was given to Cadet Smith, First Battalion Commander of The Citadel, by former Columbia native, Colonel Allison Dean Love, a member of The Citadel’s Board of Visitors. “The Citadel Board of Visitors is proud to recognize Cadet Smith for his stellar performance in his cadet career,” said Allison Dean Love on behalf of the Citadel Board of Visitors. “He is a true principled leader.” Cadet Smith, a contracted Army ROTC cadet, was chosen because he consistently demonstrates The Citadel’s core values of Honor, Duty and Respect in both his professional and personal life. He is known for a selfless attitude and for readily volunteering his time for The Citadel and for community service. These 48 graduates left a legacy to challenge future graduating classes by earning a school record composite ACT average score of 24.6. The Class of 2014 also collectively earned more than $3 million in scholarship offers. These scholarship dollars represent HOPE scholarships, General Assembly Merit scholarships, academic, athletic and merit scholarships. Of the graduating class, all students have enrolled at a two or four year college or university such as the University of Alabama, the University of Tennessee and Pepperdine University, among 14 total schools. “Our college prep academic program is stronger than ever,” said Upper School Principal Jon Bennett. “For the last several years, we have been focusing on strengthening our curriculum to reflect the necessary rigor for students to be successful at the college level and the evidence supports that we’re doing that. Additionally, we have been increasing the diversity of teaching strategies to more effectively target every learner and promote critical thinking skills. Our use of technology in the classroom also aides in the preparation of students for college life.” Starting in the fall of 2014, the high school curriculum will expand to include an ACT preparation course during the school day academic offerings, Bennett added, which he hopes to see increase scores even further. There has also been a notable increase in scholarship dollars offered to the most recent graduating classes, notwithstanding this year’s graduates. “The Class of 2014 was one of the most motivated groups of students I have had the privilege to work with in my 21 years in education,” Bennett said. “This class pushed each other and supported each other to be the best in everything. I expect that we will continue to see great things from them for years to come.” Other notable accomplishments in the 2014 graduating class include: 27 students (56 percent) graduated with honors; 14 graduates scored 30 or higher on at least one section of the ACT with a total of 10 students scoring a 30 composite score or higher; and 92 percent of the class qualified for the HOPE scholarship, which requires a 21 or higher on the ACT or a 3.0 GPA or higher. "Our college prep academic program is stronger than ever." But few would contest that any season was more memorable, exciting and successful than the 2013-2014 year of 17 championships shared among eight different sports programs. Every year, the 13 sports programs at CA bring athleticism, competitiveness and drive to the playing field – but this school year brought another very important component. In this season, the Bulldogs played to be remembered. WE BELIEVE As the Bulldogs entered the varsity football season under the leadership of new Head Coach Charlie Lansdell, it was clear they were ready to set the tone for the year. With a driven senior class at the front and the versatile talents and tenacity of younger playmakers, the team started strong with convincing wins against Mt. Pleasant (34-22) and Cornersville (55-31). With an undefeated record, the momentum slowed down with a heartbreaking loss at Wayne County. For Coach Lansdell, it was the turning point that made the difference in the season. “Our players went up against the Wildcats with a lot of confidence. It was our turn to be on top of the ‘totem pole’,” Lansdell said. “On the last drive of the game, we had our chances to leave with a win but we came up just a few yards short. From that point forward, we were determined to make sure we got a chance to play Wayne County again, and we did.” After a series of heartstopping fourth quarter wins to finish the regular season, the Bulldogs went on in the playoffs to avenge their only loss 8 when they defeated Wayne County (34-12) in the semifinal playoff game. At the end of the most successful season in more than 20 years, the Bulldogs finished in the Quarterfinals as District 11A Champions and a 10-2 record. It was a season when the word “Believe” truly inspired faith in the program among coaches, players, fans and the community. In the 2013 season, the Bulldogs were the only Maury County school – public or private - to still be in the state playoffs after week one. “Over the course of the season, we adopted the word ‘Believe’ as a theme to carry us through to the playoffs,” Lansdell said. “Our team took that as a challenge, and we started to believe we could do things that haven’t been accomplished before. I am very proud of this season and ready to get back to work and build on it as a foundation. We understand that to meet our ultimate goals, we first have to believe they are possible.” REMEMBER 17 CHAMPIONSHIPS IN BANNER YEAR Varsity girls volleyball team, District Champions. NET GAINS For girls’ volleyball at CA, the new Anderson Fieldhouse facility has taken the girls out of the fall season “hotbox” in Lovell Hall gymnasium and into the limelight as the program continues to succeed. This year, the team earned the District 11A Championship with a final record of 25-6. This season makes the third that the Lady Dawgs have won or been runner-up at the district championship level. “The girls had motivation to win…they weren’t happy with being runner-up in 2012,” said Head Coach Christy Thrasher. “I attribute the success of this season to the dedication of our players. My leaders had the desire to win a district championship and move on to the regions.” Lake Lomax, Golf District Champion. Thrasher has high expectations moving forward into the seasons to come as her JV program posted their best overall record in 2013 ending the season 15-1. SHINING BRIGHT ON THE DIAMOND Varsity softball team, 6A Region Champions. PLAYING TO WIN As the football team was preparing for a game every week, the CA Golf Team was also braving the heat of a long and dry summer season. Over the years, the team has continued to make progress with each season and plays as a serious contender with area schools. The pinnacle of the 2013 season came when senior Lake Lomax earned the Individual District 11AAA Boys Championship for CA in the fall sport. Although Lomax played golf all four years of high school for CA, he had never reached a championship level. After preparing throughout the summer months and playing several Tennessee Golf Association (TGA) tournaments, he said he felt ready for the upcoming season. “I really wanted my final year to be a great one and I was willing to put the work in to achieve that,” Lomax said. “I knew I could win the championship and I told myself the entire day that I was going to win. That was my mantra and it helped me stay focused.” After strong finishes in 2012 and 2013, CA Lady Dawgs Softball moved to the next level this year after collecting three championships on their way to a third place finish in the Class A State Tournament. The team won the 11A regular season and tournament District Championships with a 10-0 record and the 6A Region Championship before their appearance at the Spring Fling in Murfreesboro. Coach Brad Bradley knew his veteran team could go a long way with the right mental and physical preparation early in the season. “We played some of the toughest teams in the state at a Jackson, Tenn. tournament during the first week of the regular season,” Bradley said. “We went 8-0 and won the tournament. We left there knowing if we played our game, we could play with anyone.” With confidence and momentum, the Lady Dawgs tackled the regular and playoff seasons with a passion to never quit fighting for the win, Bradley said. Their relationships within the team were also vital to the team’s success. “If they had a bad inning in the field, someone would always say ‘We’re fine,’ or ‘We got this,’ and then go back out and perform like champions,” Bradley said. “Next year we return 13 girls from this team who are strong leaders in this group. I look for them to demand nothing less than the same level of dedication and desire that this year’s team has shown.” 9 Baylee Terranova pitching for CA softball. Tennis Boys Doubles District Championship. FINISHING STRONG Following the girls’ tennis team’s State Runner-Up finish in 2013, Coach Christy Thrasher knew she needed to capitalize on that momentum. Leading off the 2014 season were Austin Butterfield and Landon Kilgallon, who won the District 11A Doubles Championship; Caroline White, who won the 11A District Singles Championship; and Abigail and Anna Grace Wolfe, who won the 11A District Doubles Championship. After memorable early wins for the girls’ team against Lipscomb Academy and Central Magnet, they followed up with a second consecutive District 11A Championship and Region 6A Championship. They fought hard to return to the Spring Fling in Murfreesboro and came just short of the title game again. Jacob Adkins and Jalen Anderson, varsity football. Jacob Holmes celebrates the District Championship win. “The girls were motivated to return to Murfreesboro and win that state championship,” Thrasher said. “The girls tennis program has been very successful over the years with individual players, but for the past four years we have been very dominant in district and region play as a team. It’s hard to win a district title but for the five senior girls, they won four district championships in four years.” On the girls’ team, three moved on to play at the state level – senior Caroline White in girls’ singles; and senior Anna Grace Wolfe and sophomore Abigail Wolfe in girls’ doubles. Playing at the state level wouldn’t be possible without the support of tennis team parents and supporters, Thrasher said. At the Spring Fling in Murfreesboro in May, Schuyler who is now a junior, won the Girls A-AA 800 meter State Championship race. As a nationally ranked Elite runner, this was Schuyler’s third appearance at the state tournament, but her first state title. “This year the 800 meter run was my strongest area,” Schuyler said. “But I treated it like any other race. It was a great win, and it was great to see all my hard work pay off.” Schuyler, who also competes in the 1600 meter, the 3200 meter and cross country at Columbia Academy, has been running competitively since the sixth grade, she said. She also trains six days a week to stay in her top competitive form for her last two years of high school. 2014 Baseball District Champions THE OVERCOMERS After a late coaching change a week before the 2014 varsity baseball season began, the players and interim Head Coach Seth Anderson knew the challenges they faced. After finishing as runner-up in the 11A District Championship in 2013, the team knew expectations were high despite their obstacles, Anderson said. “I want to improve my times in every area,” Schuyler said. “I’m thankful that God gave me the ability and talent to run. I give credit to my mom and dad for always supporting and encouraging me. I give credit to Guy Avery for training me, and to CA Coach Ben Diles for coaching and supporting me.” STATE CHAMPION “Going into the season, I knew we had a great group of boys, but I didn’t have any expectations on wins or losses,” Anderson said. “The boys handled the coaching transition very well, mainly because we had a great group of senior leaders who were focused and determined to be successful.” After a slow start, the senior leaders and Coach Anderson took the team on a successful ride to the District Championship after redeeming last year’s loss to Cornersville. New Head Coach Richie Estep is encouraged by the team’s progress going into the 2015 season this spring. “We want to build off last year’s momentum and take it a step further,” Estep said. “We’re losing six seniors that will be hard to replace, but I want to develop an attitude of success every season. Our goal is to be a state contender year in and year out. It will require a lot of hard work and commitment, but I am confident it can be done. It is a very exciting time to be a part of CA athletics.” TIMELINE MAY • Softball District 11A Champions • Softball Region 6A Champions • Softball Sectional Champions • Girls’ Tennis District 11A Champions • Girls’ Tennis Region 6A Champions • Boys’ Doubles District 11A Champions — (Landon Kilgallon & Austin Butterfield) • Girls’ Doubles District 11A Champions — (Abigail Wolfe and Anna Grace Wolfe) • Girls’ Singles District 11A Champion — (Caroline White) • Region Champion 800 M (Kailey Schuyler) • Track State Champion 800 M (Kailey Schuyler) Kailey Schuyler, Track State Champion 800 M. 11 KEEP FIGHTING In the first full season played in Anderson Fieldhouse under returning Head Coach Marty DeJarnette, the boys’ basketball varsity team played with a passion felt beyond the hardwood. Motivated by more than just a desire to win, the Bulldogs found purpose inspired by different members of the Columbia Academy family. That purpose drove the team to a historic season. The Bulldogs walked away with the District 11A Championship, the Region 6A Championship, a Sectional Championship and an Elite 8 finish at the State Tournament - one of only three trips to the State Tournament in school history. Over the course of the season, the players were inspired by CA family members in the midst of personal struggles and adopted “Keep Fighting, Keep Praying, Keep Living” as a mantra. In 2012, former CA basketball star Matthew Williams (‘10) lost his life in a car accident. Also in 2012, former CA basketball player Jonathan Winchester (’99) lost his wife to cancer. As the 2014 season began, volunteer assistant basketball coach and CA alumnus Jamie Spears (’98) was struggling with his own personal battle. His wife, CA alumna Andrea (Anderson) Spears (’98), was in the final stages of a long battle with cancer. As the team prepared to go to the State Tournament, Andrea lost her battle February 15, 2014. “CA was a breath of fresh air, a place of hope and healing for me during this time,” Spears said. “Being around everyone and a part of the team was therapy for me. I always left the gym rejuvenated.” Coach Spears brought an equal amount of encouragement to the Bulldogs during the season, DeJarnette said. He even coached on the same day of Andrea’s funeral, February 18, when the Bulldogs beat Mt. Pleasant for the District Championship. Winchester also dedicated time to the team sharing his story and taking players to visit patients in the cancer ward on Christmas Day. Matthew Williams’ family supported the Bulldogs and established a basketball award in their son’s honor. “The team as a whole was very receptive to carrying these loads on their shoulders,” DeJarnette said. “I was worried about midway through the season that there was too much pressure on them to win for all of these people, but they performed and knew they ultimately had to win for themselves.” Fortunately, their drive to win was rallied on by fans who continued to come together as “Andrea’s Army” and turned out in huge numbers at the State Tournament at MTSU. Spears said he was inspired by that moment that he describes as a “sea of red.” “Balancing time between Andrea, my children, family and basketball was tough,” Spears said. “But it was something I was determined to do. Andrea was so supportive of this. She knew my love for basketball and wanted to see me engage. I never once questioned my decision to continue coaching. It gave me the strength and encouragement I needed to continue with this battle.” Above: Jamie Spears with wife Andrea Spears, and their children Kinsley, Karlie and Anderson. 12 THE MOMENT It was the District Championship game vs. cross-county rival, Mt. Pleasant on February 18, 2014. The Bulldogs were battling with only a three-point lead with under three minutes on the clock. Point guard Jackson Cary blocked a shot that sent the ball directly to forward Tayor Thompson. And then it happened. The dunk. Pandemonium broke out in Anderson Fieldhouse. Coach Marty DeJarnette called a time-out to get control of his team and capitalize on the momentum the play created. “Mt. Pleasant didn’t score on the next possession and that pretty much ended it,” DeJarnette said of his team’s 53-45 win. “That play was probably the climax of the season for us. It was a huge, instinctive play by Taylor, who had never dunked in a game before. I think it also gave our team a lot of confidence moving forward that we could make big plays and win big games. It was a great moment in CA basketball history.” “WINSTON” THE BULLDOG DEDICATED TO CA On October 4, 2013, Dr. Bill and Barbara Thrasher honored Columbia Academy with the gift and dedication of a Bulldog statue named “Winston” at the entrance of Anderson Fieldhouse. The Bulldog has been a symbol of strength, determination and persistence for more than 100 years on campus. Dating back to its days as mascot for the Columbia Military Academy, “Winston” the Bulldog still serves today as mascot for Columbia Academy. In honor of the same values that the Bulldog represents, Dr. and Mrs. Thrasher chose to recognize CA faculty and staff members who have served the school for 30 years or more. Because of your support, CA can continue to provide our students with a high quality, challenging education, numerous activities and opportunities to use their talents, and most importantly, daily interaction with God’s word. God has blessed our work at CA for the last 35 years, and we trust He will continue to bless us as we strive to continue this important work molding young lives for God’s service. Thank you again for your contributions, and we ask for your continued prayers for our students, our staff, and our school. The following Annual Giving Report is for the fiscal year ending May 31, 2014. Columbia Academy Endowment Funds Columbia Academy’s first endowment was created in December of 1984. Since then, 37 additional funds and a general endowment fund have been established. The intent is for the principal to remain for perpetuity with only the growth and interest gained to be used for current needs. Most of Columbia Academy’s endowed funds were created to provide need-based financial assistance for students. In the 2013-2014 school year, over $205,000 in assistance was given to 111 students and families with approximately 30% of that amount being drawn from the endowments and the remainder coming from the school’s operating budget. Thank you to the many generous donors who have helped grow the CA endowment, knowing that these funds will continually serve to provide students with an opportunity to learn in a Christian environment. They have given back of their TIME, TALENT and TREASURE to make CA the thriving school it is today. Our current students benefit from the sacrifices and investments countless families have made in the past. Columbia Academy is not a school that was built by a small number of families, but by many generous families from every income level who have blessed the school for more than three decades. With each new decade at CA, that same spirit of generosity is essential to sustaining the school for decades to come. Today our children are reaping the benefits of supporters whose children have long since graduated from CA. These families sacrificed to provide resources not only for their own families, but for families they may never know. Today’s families must continue to build upon this heritage of commitment to Christian education in our community. Our goal is to cultivate the whole child – mind, body and soul. When everyone embraces the spirit of giving back, everyone in the CA family is enriched for today and tomorrow. How will you use your TIME, TALENT & TREASURE to support Columbia Academy? Consider just a few examples of how you can GIVE BACK at CA. TIME • Volunteer to be a room mom or classroom volunteer. • Volunteer in the library. • Volunteer to read to students or have students read to you. • Become a member of LACE, Ladies Auxilliary for Christian Education. • Work in the Dawghouse Gift Shop. • Volunteer to work in concessions for athletic events. • Volunteer to proctor for standardized tests. TALENT • Become a substitute teacher. • Drive a bus to athletic events. • Work with the Tuesday Crew (The Tuesday Crew is a group of predominantly retired men who work on campus for the school on Tuesday mornings). • Volunteer to help maintain athletic fields. • Volunteer to help create sets for musicals and plays. TREASURE • Our greatest financial need each year is to raise our CA Annual Fund equal to $333,000. This money covers the gap between what is charged for tuition and operating expenses. Approximately 1/3 of the CA Annual Fund goes to student financial aid. • Support the Vision 2020 Capital Campaign for campus improvements. • Give financial support to our athletic teams and fine arts programs. By working with private Christian schools in Nicaragua and Haiti, these CA employees sought to be a part of lasting change through increasing educational opportunities in these cultures. Reading Specialist Laurie Love and sixth grade teacher Jenny Taylor traveled together to Port au Prince, Haiti with an education ministry sponsored by Healing Hands International. In her graduate studies at Lipscomb University, Love learned about the program designed to train teachers in basic principles of literacy to empower them to teach their students more effectively. Taylor, who had for years had a passion for mission work, joined forces with Love to broaden the scope of what they could accomplish at two private schools in the region. Despite constant battles with wind, dust and dirt in the region and a budget that exists solely on donations, the school staff and students take great pride in their facilities, Karkau said. The addition of the computer lab will now enable the students to learn on pace with students in more developed countries. “When the students toured the computer lab, each and every one of them were in awe of the room,” Karkau said. “It touched my heart and moved me beyond words when the seventh grade class prayed with us and for us, thanking our Father for the gift of the lab.” “The teachers at both schools were very open to our ideas and eager to become better teachers so that their students could become more successful,” Taylor said. “Teaching at a private school in the U.S. is a great blessing, but being able to go into another country and share what we do is something that I will never forget.” Over the course of a week, Love and Taylor worked with teachers and elementary age students at College Christien de Bonnett and the Santo School in the Port au Prince region. The use of translators was a necessity as they shared creative techniques such as interactive writing and charting to help students learn to read and comprehend better. “Before this trip, I truly did not realize that this type of opportunity was even possible,” Love said. “I am so thankful that the Lord allowed this to happen in my life. I feel blessed beyond words to have been able to assist these teachers and students transform how they learn so that they can transform their culture.” Almost two weeks after Love and Taylor returned to the U.S., Information Technology Director Eric Karkau traveled to León, Nicaragua to establish a student computer lab at Nicaragua Christian School. Karkau and two I.T. technicians from Jackson Christian School in Jackson, Tenn. worked together to completely transform a room into a functioning computer lab with 20 laptops. students in schools in Port au Prince, Haiti. School. “Much preliminary work had already been done stateside; however, the amount of work we were hoping to accomplish in a week in a third world country was daunting,” Karkau said. 25 CA N N E D F OO D D R I V E F I G H T S HUNGE R I N CO MMU NI T Y The annual Canned Food Drive at Columbia Academy concluded with Upper School students collecting more than 67,000 food items for local food banks in the Maury County community. The students also enjoyed the canned food sculpture contest as a part of this annual event, which culminated with the Senior class taking the win this year in the nursery rhyme themed contest. Following the 2013 drive, the DuPont Pioneer Giving Program awarded Columbia Academy a $5,000 grant toward the 2014 canned food drive. The grant was awarded based on the significance of the students’ hard work and dedication for this importance cause, according to a DuPont representative. STUDENTS LEARN TO SERVE ON SPRING BREAK At Columbia Academy, students enjoy a two-week Spring Break each year. The extra week is built in so that many students in our Upper School can attend an annual mission trip to the City of Children in Ensenada, Mexico during the first week. This year, a group of more than 30 students and chaperones visited the orphanage to lead Bible studies and skits, work on maintenance and construction projects, distribute food to the surrounding community and spend time with the children. CA STUDENTS COMPETE WITH THE BEST Several middle school and high school students competed at the Tennessee Mathematics Teachers’ Association Math Competition at Martin Methodist College in Pulaski in April. Awards were given to the students who placed in the top ten at each level. Award winners from CA included the following: Calculus - James Howard and Christian Harris; Geometry – Hannah McMurtry; and two first place winners, Precalculus - Landon Kilgallon and in Geometry – Kendall Hardison (pictured here). 26 Senior Samie Anderson receives her medal for winning the state-level speech competition, the Tennessee Sons of the American Revolution Rumbaugh Oration contest (pictured here with CA Speech Teacher, Joel Oswalt). Anderson also received a $1,000 scholarship and an allexpense paid trip to the national level competition to compete for a $2,000 scholarship. THE STEPHEN FAMILY GIVES BACK TO CA L to R: CA President James A. Thomas, Dennis Stephen, Billie Jean Stephen and Vice President of Development, Lisa Bennett. For 35 years, Dennis and Billie Jean Stephen have believed in and supported the powerful influence that a private, Christian education can provide in the lives of children. At the 2013-2014 Teachers’ Appreciation Banquet, the Stephens put their passion into practice with an amazing legacy gift of $100,000 toward the 2013 Annual Fund goal. This gift has enabled the school to continue important quality initiatives needed to sustain CA for years to come. “We believe in the importance of a Christian education and fully support what CA stands for,” said the Stephens. “CA has been a blessing to our family since the very beginning for our children and continues today through our grandchildren. We believe CA is making a difference in the lives of everyone who comes in contact with the teachers, coaches and staff.” The Stephen family first came to know and love CA when Dennis Stephen served as one of the original committee members who helped found the school as a Christian school in 1979. He then served on the Board of "The foundation laid at CA was definitely instrumental in helping me prepare for college, especially what I learned in math and science. I'm most grateful that I had the privilege to study the Bible every day and learn what it meant to be a Christian. I give God the glory for that opportunity." -Dr. Brad Jones (Class of '93) Columbia Academy has been impacting the lives of students like Brad for more than three decades. We need your help to ensure that even more students continue to benefit from a Christian school experience. Directors for 16 years and also served as Chairman and Secretary for four years. Billie Jean Stephen worked in the Guardhouse Gift Shop for 14 years and served as chair of CA’s Holiday Home Tour for two years. The Stephen’s children Laura (Smith) (‘93) and Andy (‘97) have also been blessed by their experience at CA. Laura was in the first kindergarten class at CA and Andy played on the State Championship baseball team of 1994 and Runner-up State Championship Basketball team in 1997. The Stephens also have two grandchildren who attend Columbia Academy. As parents, grandparents, donors, Board members, volunteers and in countless other roles at CA over the years, the Stephen family truly embraces the spirit of generosity and giving back that is crucial to continuing the legacy of Christian education at CA. Tuition alone does not cover our annual operating expenses. The CA Annual Fund is $333,333 – the amount to close the gap each year between what tuition covers in operating expenses and what it costs to operate the school. We need your help whether you are a parent, alum, grandparent or supporter of our school. All gifts - regardless of the amount - make a difference and are tax deductible. Please complete the enclosed envelope and help shape the future today! SYMPATHY The Columbia Academy Family expresses sympathy to the following families: 1987 Dr. Kimberly Barker passed away on May 11, 2014. Kim was the associate professor of pharmacy practice and director of drug information services for the College of Pharmacy at Lipscomb University. She is survived by her daughter, Jane VanDerBurgh, her parents, Rick and Lynda Barker, and her brother, Bo. What she learned from Kittrell, she said, enables her now in her role reversal on the soccer field. Eight years after playing middle school soccer, Denney is now coaching middle school soccer for Lipscomb Academy in Nashville where she also teaches high school chemistry. Life came full circle last season when Denney coached the Mustangs against the Bulldogs and her first coach Kittrell, who returned to CA in 2012. “I clearly recall shaking hands at the end of the game with the opposing team, especially my old coach, Zach Kittrell,” Denney said. “It was an experience unlike any other as a soccer player and coach, and I hope to keep doing what Zach did - take a chance on a middle school soccer player and then let her loose to see what she can do.” SISTERS BRING STORIES TO LIFE FOR CHILDREN 1998 Andrea (Anderson) Spears (wife of Jamie Spears) passed away on February 15, 2014 after a two-year battle with breast cancer. Andrea served as the Assistant Principal at Centerville Intermediate School. She is survived by her husband, Jamie and their three children, Kinsley, Karlie, and Anderson, her parents, Gary and Lynetta Anderson, her sisters, Kari (Warren) Robinson, Jesi, and Krystyna, and her brother, Matthew. ALUMNI SPOTLIGHTS FORMER SOCCER PL AYER PL AYS IT FORWARD Sisters Emily Owens (‘10) and Marcy (Owens) Yoder (‘08) CA graduates and sisters Emily Owens (’10) and Marcy (Owens) Yoder (‘08) have a lot in common, including friends named Kaitlyn and Blake. The friends becamse the inspiration for the sisters’ collaboration to self-publish two children’s books created originally for their friends. Today, the books Kaitlyn Rabbit and Blake are available for purchase on Amazon.com and at The Old Curiosity Book Shop in Columbia. Both books use animal characters to teach timeless values to children about being selfless, giving and content with what you have, Marcy said. Julie Denney ('07) and Zach Kittrell In middle school at Columbia Academy, Julie Denney (’07) never knew she would one day not only love to play soccer, but would coach the sport she calls the “beautiful game.” She learned to appreciate the sport as a seventh grader under coach Zach Kittrell. In high school at CA, she played in four district championships, three regional championships, and three sectional championships. She also fondly remembers scoring a goal that sent the team to the state tournament in 2005. “I played for three different head coaches at CA, but I credit Zach Kittrell for taking the chance on the timid seventh grader who stepped out on the field in 2001,” said Denney. “The choice of using animals was not a conscious thing,” Marcy said. “Tales about animals can teach us hard truths about ourselves in a more easily digestible way. They have a way of nestling into your heart where true change and growth begin.” Emily, who is pursuing a Reading Specialist degree at Harding University, writes the stories while her sister Marcy, who is pursuing an M.A. in Teaching from Harding University, does the illustrations. Marcy said that they love working together and already have a book about a singing frog underway. “The feedback has been so overwhelming,” Marcy said. “It means so much to hear parents say that their kids request the books by name. It’s even more valuable to watch a child talk about the characters and make connections in their own lives.” 33 ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR RICHARD FARRIS RECEIVES ALUMNI AWARD AT HOMECOMING During the 2013 Homecoming game half-time ceremony, Richard Farris (’85) was named Alumnus of the Year. CLASS REUNIONS 34 CLASS OF 1983 CLASS OF 1988 CLASS OF 1993 CLASS OF 1998 CLASS OF 2003 CLASS OF 2008 IMPACT THE FUTURE JOIN THE CA LEGACY SOCIETY Do you hope that Columbia Academy will be around impacting future generations in your family and community? Do you believe in our mission to touch as many young lives as possible with the word of God? With your help we can ensure that CA will be around for generations to come so that we can continue to impact the future together for Christ! We ask you to join those who have invested in CA’s future through planned giving. The CA Legacy Society recognizes the “legacy” of those who are investing in the school’s future and the souls of the students it touches through their estate gifts. Estate gifts are literally the single, largest transfer of wealth that you will make in this lifetime. While we think of giving to good works out of our discretionary income, we often forget about giving from our net worth. We strongly believe that our families want to pass their values down to their heirs along with the transfer of their valuables. There are often significant tax savings available with charitable estate gifts. Please consider making a lifetime investment in Columbia Academy and join these CA Legacy Society members. ROBERSONS ESTABLISH STEM ENDOWMENT CA Legacy Society members Joe and Judy Roberson invested in Columbia Academy by starting The Joe & Judy Roberson (STEM) Endowment. Joe and Judy Roberson have long realized the importance of education with a focus on STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) in today’s world. To support this focus at CA, they established the Joe and Judy Roberson STEM Endowment to begin in 2014. The endowment will offer early encouragement and incentive annually to an outstanding sophomore student in Algebra II and an outstanding sophomore student in Advanced Chemistry. More than 30 years ago, the Robersons’ daughters Amy and Abby started attending CA where they later graduated. Judy Roberson taught English at CA for 12 years and today Joe Roberson is a member of the volunteer Tuesday Crew. The Robersons also have grandchildren at CA who are enjoying the benefits provided by the generosity of donors much like their grandparents. We are so grateful to the Robersons for believing in the importance of high quality education and Christian values. If you are interested in starting an Endowment, please contact Lisa Bennett at lisa. [email protected] or 931-398-5357. 35 2014/2015 CALENDAR C O L U M B I A A C A D E M Y 1 1 0 1 W E S T 7 T H S T .
