EXECUTIVESUMMARY
TheHEROresearchagendareflectstheresearchissuesmostimportanttoHEROmembers.
HEROmembersmeetannuallytoreviewkeyhealthandwell-beingresearchactivities
completedovertheprecedingtwelvemonths,discussemergingindustrytrends,andshare
theirthoughtsonimportantresearchtopicsthatshouldbestudiedinthefuture.Theresultsof
thatmeetingarereviewedbytheHEROResearchAdvisoryGroup(RAG),asubcommitteeofthe
HEROResearchCommitteecomprisedofoutstandingleadersinresearch,businessand
educationwithmanyyearsofexperienceinthefield.Basedontheirexpertreview,HERO
leadershipfinalizestheagendathatwillguideHERO’sresearchprioritiesinthecomingyear.
The2016HEROResearchAgendafocusesonthefollowingtopfiveprioritiesbasedonfeedback
fromHEROmembers:
• Well-being:Thereisnoconsensusdefinitionofwell-beingbutthetermisincreasingly
beingusedasareplacementfor“wellness”and“health”.HEROneedstodefinetheconcept
fromHERO’spointofviewaswellasidentifystrategiesformeasurement.
•
Sustainability:HEROmemberswouldlikeHEROtodefinesustainability,identifybest
practicesforsustaininghealthmanagementprogramsovertimeandforunderstandinghow
workforcehealthandwell-beingcontributestoorganizationalsustainability.
•
HealthandBusinessResults:HEROconductedastudylinkinginvestmentinworkforce
healthtocompanystockperformance.ThestudyispublishedintheJanuary2016issueof
JOEM.HEROwillcontinuetosupportresearchdemonstratingtheimpactofimproving
healthintheworkplaceonbusinessresults.TheworkoftheHealth,Performance,and
Productivity(HPP)StudyCommitteeandtheHERO-PHAMeasurementandProgram
EvaluationGuidearerelatedtothisresearchtopic.
•
CultureofHealth:HEROmembersareinterestedinresearchthatguidesorganizationsin
creatingaworkplaceculturethatsupportsemployeehealthandwell-being.TheCultureof
HealthStudyCommitteehasidentifiedelementsofcultureandcompletedaliterature
reviewontheevidencebasesupportingthoseelements.Moreresearchisneededto
demonstratehowtoinfluenceacultureofhealthsoityieldsbusinessoutcomes.
•
Engagement:HEROmembersareinterestedinresearchthatdefinesmeaningful
engagementandidentifiesthefactorsthatcreateandsustainbothorganizationaland
individualengagementaswellastherelationshipsbetweenthem.TheEngagementStudy
Committeehascompleteditsinitialcharterstatementandlaunchedaworkgroupdedicated
toanenvironmentalscanonthedefinitionanddriversofengagement.
Inadditiontothetopicsabove,HEROwillinitiateormaintainveryactiveandproductive
workgroupsinthefollowingareasofresearch:

Employer-CommunityCollaborationinImprovingPopulationHealth:Researchonthe
valueofemployerinvolvementincommunityhealthinitiatives,includingidentificationof
theactivitiesthatmakethemostsenseforemployerinvolvement,andhowbestto
facilitatecollaboration.
•
HealthandPerformance:Researchontherelationshipbetweenworkforcehealthand
employeeperformanceandproductivity.
•
HEROScorecard:ResearchfocusedonvalidatingandminingthedatacollectedintheHERO
HealthandWell-beingBestPracticesScorecardinCollaborationwithMercerforthe
purposesofidentifyingbestpractices.
•
Incentives:Researchonthedesign,applicationandeffectivenessofincentivesinemployee
healthmanagementprograms.
•
Technology:Bestpracticeapplicationofhowtechnologysupportsengagementinhealth
strategiesandimprovedoutcomes.
ACCOMPLISHINGTHERESEARCHAGENDA
TheHEROResearchCommitteeiscomprisedofthreesubcommitteesincludingtheResearchAdvisory
Group(RAG),theMeasurementStandardsSubcommittee(MSS),andtheResearchStudySubcommittee
(RSS).TheRAGestablishesHERO’sresearchagendaandprioritieswhiletheRSSprovidesguidanceand
oversightofnewresearchstudies.TheMSSprovidesdatafromtheHEROScorecardtoinformnew
researchandalsoestablishesstandardsformeasurementintheworkplacehealthandwell-beingfield.
Theroleandstructureofthegroupsiscapturedintheflowdiagrambelow.Additionally,topic-specific
StudyCommitteesoutsideoftheResearchCommitteeoftensetthefoundationforHEROresearch
projectsbyhelpingmembersunderstandwhatisalreadyknownaboutagiventopicandbyidentifying
knowledgeandresearchgaps.Thisworkprovidesthefoundationforidentifyingopportunitiesfor
focusedformalresearchstudies.TheResearchCommitteeandtheStudyCommitteesarecollectively
chargedwithproductionofresearchreports,presentations,and/orpublishedpaperstosharewhat
they’velearnedasaresultoftheirresearchactivities.

inthesecommitteesisthegreatestwaytoderivevalueforyourselfandyourorganization.
HEROcommitteescontributenewknowledgeorinformationinseveraldifferentways:
• Environmentalscansorliteraturereviewsidentifywhatisalreadyknownaboutagiven
topicareaandtypicallyidentifiesknowledgegapswithrecommendationsforfuture
research.
• Descriptiveresearchstudiesexamineemployerattitudesorpracticesinaspecificareaand
areoftenaccomplishedthroughqualitativeandquantitativemethodsincludingsurvey,
informationalinterviews,casestudies,orfocusgroups.
• Originalresearchstudiesrelyonsophisticateddataanalysistechniquestogeneratenew
discoveriesaboutaspecificresearchtopic.
• Consensusorguidancepapersthatrepresentcollaborationswithotherorganizations
seekingtoidentifycommongroundaroundpolicyandprogramdesign,implementation,
andevaluation.

ANINVITATIONTOJOINTHEHERORESEARCHPARTNERS
Oursuccessinaccomplishingthisambitiousresearchagendadependsonfundingsupportfromvarious
sourcesincludingHEROmemberorganizations,otheremployersinterestedinworkplacehealthand
well-beingresearchand,whererelevant,grantsfromfoundationsandgovernmentagencies.
Basedonourconsiderableexperienceinfacilitatingresearch,weanticipatecarryingoutprojects
supportedbyfourdifferentfundingmodels:
1. Asingleorganizationfundingresearchprojectsofinteresttoit;
2. Twoormoreorganizationscollaboratingtofundprojectsofmutualinterest;
3. Agroupoforganizationscomingtogethertocreateafundingpooltosupportresearchprojects
theyagreeupon;
4. Grantssecuredtofundprojects.
HEROispursuingalloftheseoptionstofacilitateresearchthatalignswiththeHEROresearchagenda.
Theoptionofbringingseveralorganizationstogethertocombinefinancialresourcestofundmultiple
researchprojectsisimportanttoHEROasweplannear-termresearchprojects.Wehavecreateda
collaborationcalled“HEROResearchPartners”tohelpHEROmoveresearchforwardandarecurrently
seekingorganizationsinterestedinbecomingpartners.
WeinviteyoutojointheHEROResearchPartnersbycontributing$10,000tohelpfundourresearch
agenda.AsaHEROResearchPartner,yourorganizationwillhaveavoiceindeterminingtheprojectsto
pursue,alongwiththeopportunitytobeinvolved,atyouroption,inauthoringmanuscriptsresulting
fromtheseprojects.MembersoftheHEROResearchPartnerswillbelistedontheHEROwebsite.
PreviousprojectsmadepossiblebytheHEROResearchPartnersfundhavebeenpublishedinpeerreviewedjournalswithearlyaccesstothefindingsmadeavailablefirsttofundingpartners.These
studiesassessedthevalidityoftheHEROScorecardbycomparingemployers’healthmanagementbestpracticescoreswiththeiractualmedicalclaimtrendsandalsobydemonstratingthatHEROScorecard
high-scoringcompaniesoutperformedthestockmarket.Thesestudiesfoundthattherewasastrong
correlationbetweenemployers’self-reportedbestpracticesandmeaningfulbusinessoutcomes.
