The dual-carriageway Grande Raccordo Anulare upgrading works to 6-lane pose difficulties and technical but also and mainly executive requirements. These
requirements has also restricted the project technical choices, starting with the alignment and ending with the executive plan.
The need to maintain all along the route at least two lanes (open to traffic) in each direction and to avoid junction ramps to the arterial highway closure, has been the principle
informing the construction sites and road condition during the extension plan.
Therefore, as fixed by the Client’s executive criteria, the planning choice is to create the new alignment moved outwards the GRA, at a certain distance, in
order to realize al least the external alternative carriageway, working as a consequence with no traffic and without interfering with traffic flow.
At a later date the traffic flow can be moved to the new external carriageway (which will be a dual carriageway with two lanes, the width of each traffic
lane being ml 3,25 and having a New Jersey median barrier). In such conditions the new internal carriageway will be completed and the traffic flow will be
moved there.
At the end of works, the old carriageways will be abandoned and the unused structures will be dismantled; next to the cut-and-cover sections, will be
reconstituted the earth continuity between external and internal GRA areas culverting them and restoring typical vegetation.
