Monday, September 19, 2016 Quarter 1 … Inside this issue: Language Arts 1 Spelling 1 Writing 2 Math 2 Social Studies 2 Photos 3 Star Student and Principal Honor Board 3 Next week our class will be focusing on how people from different cultures contribute to a community. We will be discussing how we can learn from people from another culture. Here are some activities that you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we’ll be practicing: Special points of interest: Have you logged on to the EnVision website? Your child has been given their log in information. Please let me know if you have any questions about how to use the site. Vocabulary Skill: compound words Discuss the meanings of the vocabulary words with your child, and then take turns using each word in a sentences. (scared, classmate, pronounce, practicing, tumble, admires, community, contribute) Spelling: Help your child review long vowel sounds by reading each word aloud. Your child will hold up the appropriate vowel card—a, i, o, or u—and then spell the word. Comprehension: sequence In the lit packet, you will read a passage about how to start a small library in the classroom. You and your child will figure out the sequence of the steps given in the passage. Your child will look at the chart and write a sentence that describes each step based on their order in the passage. The test on these skills is scheduled for Friday, September 30. The subject of a sentence tells who or what the sentence is about. It comes at the beginning of the sentence. In Writing, we will continue to learn about the 6 traits of good writing. We will focus on word Extra Extra…Read All About Our Week! choice first as we discuss words that we should try to avoid. We want to be sure to use exact vocabulary when we write in order to make our writing more interesting. We will also learn about the trait of voice. When a writer has good voice, we can tell how they feel about a topic. Students will pretend that they are pump- kins on Halloween and write about how they feel. They will not be able to use any feeling words, however. They must show how they feel by describing their reactions. For example, instead of saying they were excited, they may say, “I was jumping for joy.” Math The students are learning some great strategies for helping them to remember their multiplication facts! Here are some of the strategies we have discussed: When 2 or 5 are factors, we can simply skip count. When 9 is a factor, you can subtract one from the other factor. This past week we discussed how to tell the difference between the names of the continents, countries, states and cities. Students also learned about the four cardinal directions. We move north as we move towards the north pole. We move south as we move toward the south pole. We also learned the directions of east and west. Finally, students learned about a compass and how to use it when finding places on a map and a globe.
