Next week our class
will be focusing on
how people from different cultures contribute to a community.
We will be discussing
how we can learn from
people from another
culture.
Here are some activities that you can do
with your child to help
reinforce the skills
we’ll be practicing:

Special points of
interest:

Have you logged on
to the EnVision website? Your child has
been given their log
in information.
Please let me know if
you have any questions about how to
use the site.
Vocabulary Skill:
compound words
Discuss the meanings
of the vocabulary
words with your child,
and then take turns using each word in a sentences. (scared, classmate, pronounce,
practicing, tumble,
admires, community,
contribute)

Spelling:
Help your child review
long vowel sounds by
reading each word
aloud. Your child will
hold up the appropriate
vowel card—a, i, o, or
u—and then spell the
word.

Comprehension:
sequence
In the lit packet, you
will read a passage
about how to start a
small library in the
classroom. You and
your child will figure
out the sequence of the
steps given in the passage. Your child will
look at the chart and
write a sentence that
describes each step
based on their order in
the passage.
The test on these skills
is scheduled for Friday, September 30.

In Grammar next week, the
students will be learning about
the subject of a sentence. The
subject of a sentence tells who or
what the sentence is about. It
comes at the beginning of the
sentence.
In Writing, we will continue
to learn about the 6 traits of good
writing. We will focus on word

choice first as we discuss words
that we should try to avoid. We
want to be sure to use exact vocabulary when we write in order
to make our writing more interesting. We will also learn about
the trait of voice. When a writer
has good voice, we can tell how
they feel about a topic. Students
will pretend that they are pump-
kins on Halloween and write
about how they feel. They will
not be able to use any feeling
words, however. They must
show how they feel by describing their reactions. For example,
instead of saying they were excited, they may say, “I was
jumping for joy.”
Math
The students are learning some
great strategies for helping them to
remember their multiplication facts!
Here are some of the strategies we
have discussed:

When 2 or 5 are factors, we can
simply skip count.

When 9 is a factor, you can
subtract one from the other factor. That number will be the
The students are learning quite
a bit about how to read Maps and
Globes. This past week we discussed how to tell the difference
between the names of the continents, countries, states and cities.
We also discussed the size of
these places and listed them in
digit in the tens place. Then,
think about what number could
be added to the tens place to
make 9. That will be the digit
in the ones place.
Example: 6 x 9 = ?
1st Step: 6 - 1 = 5 (This is the digit

the blank. This is the digit in the
ones place. The answer is 54.

The Zero Property states that
any number multiplied by 0
will equal 0.

The Identity Property states that
any number multiplied by 1
will equal the other number.
2nd Step: 5 + ? = 9. 4 would go in
order from greatest to least.
Students also learned about the
four cardinal directions. We move
north as we move towards the
north pole. We move south as we
move toward the south pole. We
also learned the directions of east
and west. Finally, students learned
about a compass and how to use it
when finding places on a map and
a globe.
